Helper App

Download the free bonus app (Kosmos Helper App): game tutorial and atmospheric soundtrack. Check the app stores for details.

Game materials

  • 6 Key tokens
  • 9 Treasure chest tokens
  • 7 Strange items: 1 Jungle map, 1 Magnifying glass, 5 Leaves
  • 1 Answer disk
  • 36 Riddle cards: 6 for each of the types of riddles: pink, blue, purple, red, yellow, and orange

Game setup

Before the first game

Carefully remove the seven strange items (leaves, magnifying glass, jungle map), the treasure chests, and the key tokens from the die-cut boards and unwrap the deck of cards.

Before each game

Shuffle the treasure chest tokens face down and lay them out in a row along the edge of the table. Keep the key tokens, the answer disk, and the strange items ready on the table next to the treasure chest tokens. You will need them over the course of the game.

Sort the riddle cards into six piles according to color. Thoroughly shuffle each pile. Then, draw one card from each pile and place the six cards face down next to one another in the middle of the table. Place the remaining cards in the box. We recommend playing the first rounds in the order shown (pink, blue, purple, red, yellow, and orange).

Gameplay

Each game is made up of six riddles. Each of the six riddle cards presents a new riddle. You can recognize the different types of riddles by the symbols and colors on the backs of the cards.

Here are the six different types of riddles:

  • Moon shadow riddles (pink)
  • Binoculars riddles (blue)
  • Magnifying glass riddles (purple)
  • Map riddles (red)
  • Leaf riddles (yellow)
  • Hat riddles (orange)

You will find detailed explanations of the different types of riddles on pages 5 and 6 of the rulebook (see below).

For every riddle that you solve, you receive a key token that you may place on a treasure chest token of your choosing. At the end of the game, you may turn over all of the treasure chest tokens on which you have placed a key token to find out what treasure you have won.

How to solve a riddle

To start a riddle, turn over one riddle card and work together to solve the riddle.

The answer to a riddle will always consist of three different animals. Once you have found the answer, enter the three answer animals on the answer disk. Here's how:

The outer disk shows the six different types of riddles with the matching riddle symbols and colors. On the three inner disks, you can see 18 jungle animals. Find the color and the riddle symbol of the current riddle card. Then turn the disks so that the three answer animals are under the matching riddle symbol.

Example: As the answer to the riddle, you found the snake, the frog, and the ant. You now place these three answer animals under the matching riddle symbol on the answer disk. Then, you turn over the answer disk and check your answer.

Once you have entered the answer, turn over the answer disk

On the back, you will find a small window. Here you can check to see if your answer is correct.

Is your answer correct? If so, you will see a golden key in the window on the back of the answer disk. As a reward, you may now take one of the key tokens and place it on one of the nine treasure chest tokens.

Is your answer incorrect? If so, you will see a red X in the window on the back of the answer disk. Check again to make sure you entered your answer under the correct riddle symbol, and that all of the answer animals are correct. If you still get a red X on the back after making any adjustments, you will not be allowed to take a key token in this round.

Would you like to know the answer to a riddle? The booklet lists them all on page 7 (not reproduced here). On the back of each riddle card, there is a number in the bottom-left corner; in the booklet's table, find the riddle symbol, then the number from the card, and the three animals shown are the answer animals for that riddle.

When does the game end?

The game ends as soon as you have solved all six riddles. You may now turn over all of the treasure chest tokens on which you placed a key token. What treasures did you find?

The six types of riddles

Moon shadow riddles (pink)

Three of the animals have assembled under the light of the moon. You can see their shadows on the riddle card. Can you figure out which animals they are? Those will be your three answer animals.

Binoculars riddles (blue)

The jungle animals have hidden themselves on the riddle card. But there are only 15 — three are missing! Figure out which three of the 18 animals are not on the card. Those will be your three answer animals.

Tip: Get some help from the answer disk — check each ring to see which animals you can find and which are missing.

Magnifying glass riddles (purple)

You will also need: the magnifying glass.

You will see a bunch of jungle animals romping around on the riddle card. But there are only three that you can view all at the same time under the magnifying glass. Position the glass on the riddle card in such a way that there are exactly three animals inside the frame. Those will be your three answer animals.

Important: You are not allowed to have any half animals or parts of other animals visible in the glass! Also, the glass is not allowed to extend beyond the edge of the card.

Map riddles (red)

You will also need: the jungle map.

On the riddle card, you will see a child and a path through the jungle leading to a cave. Follow the path shown on the riddle card! First, find the child. After that, look for the next indicated object or location. Take the most direct route to it! Proceed in the same way from location to location until you arrive at the cave. The child will encounter three jungle animals on the way. Those will be your three answer animals.

Leaf riddles (yellow)

You will also need: the leaves.

On the riddle card, you will find the 18 jungle animals and five squares in different colors. The square windows on the leaves are framed in the same colors, so each colored square has a matching leaf. Place the leaves on the riddle card in such a way that the squares on the riddle card can be seen through the windows with the matching colors on the leaves. The leaves are not allowed to overlap or extend beyond the edge of the card. Then, can you spot the three animals that are unable to hide? Those will be your three answer animals.

Hat riddles (orange)

You will see a certain hat depicted on the riddle card. Take a close look at the game box — both inside and outside. The jungle animals are wearing hats. Can you find the three animals that are wearing the EXACT SAME hat as the one shown on the riddle card? Those will be your three answer animals.
