Game Material
- 4 puzzle bags (each puzzle picture has a different back): 3 with 88 pieces each, 1 with 84 pieces
- 16 riddle documents
- 9 strange pieces
- 4 decoder disks of different sizes
- 4 two-part snap buttons
- 4 strange boat parts
- 1 instruction booklet including help and solution section
Free bonus app (the KOSMOS "Erklär-App"; check compatibility in the store): play without reading the rules, digital timer, atmospheric soundtrack, solution help.
Additionally Required Material
You also need pens (ideally a ballpoint pen and a pencil), scissors and, if needed, paper for notes. You also need a clock, ideally a stopwatch. Alternatively you can use the digital timer with atmospheric soundtrack: select the game in the KOSMOS Erklär-App and press the hourglass.
Setup
Lay out the 16 riddle documents, fanned out at the edge of the table, so that you can see the symbols on the front. Make sure you cannot yet see the inside of the riddle documents!
The 4 puzzle bags can initially stay in the box.
Carefully detach the 4 decoder disks and the seven strange pieces from the cardboard. If necessary, use a pointed object to open the hole on the strange piece "narrow plank". Put the plank together with the other strange pieces, including the transparent paper, the steering wheel and the four strange boat parts, as well as three black snap buttons, to one side at the edge of the table. You will only need this material later in the game.
Now assemble the decoder disk:
- Take the fourth two-part black snap button and push the part with the recess from behind into the small middle hole of the largest decoder disk.
- Then place the three other disks onto the snap button by size, starting with the second-largest disk. The digits on the outer rings of the three disks must face up.
- Finally close the button with the head part of the black snap button. Press both parts firmly together until the head part snaps into the recess and you hear a click.
Check whether your decoder disk now looks like the two illustrations (front and back). Do the disks turn easily? If so, put the decoder disk within reach at the edge of the table. If not, check whether you pressed the two parts of the snap button together correctly. The two parts should not come apart easily.
Where is the game board?
There is no game board in this game! What there is to discover and what the places you visit look like is shown by the 4 puzzle pictures, which you put together and discover little by little.
You tell the four puzzles apart by their backs. There are four different backs:
- 1 puzzle with fish on the back
- 1 puzzle with anchors on the back
- 1 puzzle with only a grey-blue back without a pattern
- 1 puzzle with stars on the back
During the game you are told exactly which puzzle bag you may take from the box and when.
Example: At the start of the game you only have the puzzle bag containing the pieces with a grey-blue back without a pattern, and the decoder disk.
During the game, riddle documents are added. You may take and look at a riddle document whenever you have set a code on the decoder disk and the symbols that appeared refer you to the corresponding riddle document. It can also happen that a text explicitly refers you to a riddle document. Then you may take the corresponding riddle document from the edge of the table.
You may only use the strange pieces when you are explicitly told that you have found them. Until then they must stay at the edge of the table!
How to Play
Your goal is to sign on to a ship and find Blackbeard's legendary treasure, the Gold of the Pirates. That would certainly be easier if there were not a lot of riddles waiting for you, without whose solution you cannot go on!
IMPORTANT: To solve the riddles you may treat the material as you like: write on it, fold it, cut it up. Everything is allowed and some of it is even necessary. (You can only play the game once; afterwards you know all the solutions to the riddles and no longer need the game material!)
You puzzle your way one after the other through the different places. Again and again you come across locked objects. They are secured with small coloured locks that can only be opened with a three-digit number code.
When you see a riddle, take a close look at the material available to you that you are already allowed to use. This can be strange pieces, riddle documents, individual puzzle pieces, the instructions or the box. Think and combine together how you can solve the riddle to find the correct three-digit code. You then set this code on the decoder disk.
On the outer ring of the disk, ten differently coloured locks are shown. Each lock stands for one code you are looking for. Pay close attention to which lock is shown on the objects in the puzzle picture! Set the three-digit number code under this lock on the disk, from the outside to the inside. Then turn the decoder disk over to its back. A picture appears in the viewing window of the largest disk. It tells you whether your code might be right.
Example: As the solution to the riddle with the white lock you have worked out the code 9 7 3. You set this combination below the white lock on the decoder disk, from the outside to the inside. Then turn the decoder disk over to its back to check the code.
Is the code wrong?
Then the small viewing window on the back of the decoder disk shows you either a blank or a lock in a DIFFERENT colour. Check the lock colour and the code on the front. If that does not help, look at the riddle again to arrive at a different code.
Is the code possibly right?
Then in the viewing window on the back of the decoder disk you see the lock in the SAME colour as the lock you want to open.
Now turn the decoder disk back to its front. In the three viewing windows on the three smallest disks you see three symbols. Read from the outside to the inside, they form a very specific symbol sequence. Look for exactly this combination on the riddle documents.
Example: You want to open the book with the white lock. After you have set the code below the white lock on the decoder disk and then seen the white lock in the viewing window on the back of the disk, you receive symbols in the viewing windows on the front of the decoder disk. Now pick the riddle document with this symbol sequence out of the pile.
Is the code really right?
If you find a riddle document with the symbol sequence shown on the decoder disk, the number code is correct. Take the riddle document immediately and look at it. It tells you how to go on.
Is the code wrong after all?
If you find no riddle document with the corresponding symbol sequence, check once more the order of the number code, and compare the lock colour set on the decoder disk with that of the lock you want to open, as well as the symbol sequence that appeared on the front with the one on the riddle documents. If the code is still wrong, look at the riddle again carefully to arrive at a different code.
IMPORTANT: You must solve the riddles in order! That means: you may only take the next riddle document or lay the next puzzle once you have cracked the respective code beforehand or the game allows it in the text!
Do You Need Help?
If you ever get stuck, the game can give you assistance. For each code there are 3 matching helps in the corresponding lock colour.
- Each help "1. Tipp" (1st hint) gives you a first useful hint and tells you what you need, or what you can do first, to solve the corresponding riddle.
- The helps "2. Tipp" (2nd hint) help you more concretely to find a solution to the corresponding riddle.
- The helps "Auflösung" (solution) reveal the solution path and the correct code or the correct symbol sequence for the next riddle document.
The green help section begins on the back of this booklet. There, on page 1, you see where you find which hints. Look closely only at the hint you currently need for your riddle. A short guide is on page 2 of the help section.
Do not be afraid to use helps if you get stuck. If you have used a help and it has given you a NEW hint / revealed the solution, tick the box at the bottom right of the help used. At the end of the game, add up the ticked helps and solutions. They count towards the scoring.
How to use the help system
You are stuck on a riddle and need a hint or the solution? This is how the help system works:
- Which lock do you want to open? Look at which colour the lock has that you are currently trying to open.
- Find the right hint page. On the help overview page, look up the page number for the lock you want to open. Check that you really opened the right page.
- Use a 1st and/or 2nd hint for the riddle. First read the 1st hint. If the hint gave you a NEW hint, tick the box at the bottom right. If not, leave the box empty and look at the 2nd hint. Tick only the helps that gave you NEW hints!
- Look at the solution. According to the instruction, fold over either half or the whole page with the 1st and 2nd hints.
- For solution: fold half page. Fold the page with the 1st and 2nd hints along the dotted line towards the centre of the booklet. Make sure the right lock colour appears.
- For solution: fold whole page. Fold over the whole page with the 1st and 2nd hints. Look at the solution under the corresponding lock colour.
- If you have used a solution, tick the corresponding box at the bottom right.
End of the Game
The game ends when you have found the secret hiding place of Blackbeard's treasure and solved the last riddle. A riddle document will tell you so.
Scoring
Having put the four puzzles together and solved all riddles is a great success! Anyone who also wants to know how well they puzzled and solved riddles can check the table below.
For the number of helps used, count the ticked boxes in the help section. Only the helps that gave you NEW hints / revealed solutions count!
| Time | No help | 1–2 helps | 3–5 helps | 6–10 helps | > 10 helps |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| < 100 min. | 10 stars | 9 stars | 8 stars | 6 stars | 5 stars |
| < 120 min. | 9 stars | 8 stars | 7 stars | 5 stars | 4 stars |
| < 150 min. | 8 stars | 7 stars | 6 stars | 4 stars | 3 stars |

Certificate
The back of the booklet contains a certificate to fill in: the date and place, the minutes and seconds needed, the total number of helps used, the stars received in the scoring, the bonus stars earned for finding Blackbeard's treasure, and the total number of stars achieved.
The Game Begins
At the start you have the decoder disk and the puzzle bag containing the puzzle pieces with the grey-blue back without a pattern. Start the stopwatch or the timer and now put together the first place of your adventure, the tavern.
