1 decoder disk, 1 string, 3 folding sheets ("Reed's Office", "Surveillance Van", "Poster"), 1 sheet ("Facade"), 7 specialists, 14 "strange parts", 9 "blueprint" pieces, "Window Cleaner" and "Camera" items, 1 sheet "Detect by you – Pro Set", 1 die. (Component list as printed; items are shown in pictures only.)
This Anniversary Edition also contains craft supplies (ballpoint pen, pencil, ruler, eraser, scissors). Attention: there are no hints for the riddles of the game on them!
In addition you need one or more sheets of paper and a clock (preferably a stopwatch) to measure time. Alternatively you can use the digital timer: in the KOSMOS explanation app select the game and press the hourglass.
Game Setup
Place the following game materials at the edge of the table: folding sheet "Poster", folding sheet "Reed's Office", the sheet "Detect by you – Pro Set", the 7 specialists and the 14 "strange parts". In the course of the game you will be told when you receive any of these.
Sort the cards by their backs into the three stacks:
Riddle cards (A to Z) > Solution cards (1 to 30) > Help cards
Sort the Help cards separated by symbols. Then place them at the edge of the table. Make sure you do not see any card fronts yet.
Where Is the Game Board?
In this game there is no game board! What there is to discover in the game and what the rooms look like, you must find out yourselves. At the start of the game you have the closed folding sheet "Surveillance Van" and the decoder disk at your disposal. In the course of the game, Riddle cards are added – either you find them on illustrations or a text points them out. Whenever this is the case, you may take the corresponding things and look at them.
You may likewise use the "strange parts" etc. only when you are expressly told that you have found them. Until then they must remain unused at the edge of the table!
Example: When you see an illustration like this, you may immediately take the corresponding Riddle card and look at it (here Riddle card R).
Course of the Game
Your goal is to crack the vault together in as short a time as possible. That would certainly be easier if not every lock came with a riddle. Once the game has begun, you may look more closely at the folding sheet "Surveillance Van", but not open it yet! In the course of the game you will repeatedly find objects that are locked with a three-digit number code. To open them, you must find out the matching code and set it on the decoder disk. On the outer rim of the disk 10 different symbols are shown. Each symbol stands for one code to be solved. Which symbol belongs to which code, you must find out yourselves. For this it is advisable to pay attention to every detail. If you believe you can crack a code, set it under the corresponding symbol on the disk. A number then appears in the viewing window of the smallest disk.
This gives the number of the Solution card, which you may then look at. If the code was wrong, you must keep searching for a solution or first keep puzzling elsewhere. If the code was right, the Solution card tells you how to continue.
Example: As the solution to the riddle with the symbol you have worked out the code 1 1 0. You now set this combination below the symbol on the decoder disk. In the small window the number of the Solution card appears, which you may then look for in the stack and look at.
Is the code wrong?
Then the Solution card will tell you so. In this case simply sort the card back into the stack and look again at the riddle you just solved wrongly; perhaps you overlooked something. Sometimes hints are also still missing to be able to solve the riddle at all. Then you must continue elsewhere.
Speech bubble on the card: "If the cards could talk, they would recommend a good lawyer ..."
Example card text: "This code is unfortunately not correct! Sort this card back into the stack of Solution cards immediately afterwards!"
Is the code possibly right?
Then the Solution card looks, for example, as follows (example card: "The code is possibly correct. On what is the code symbol to be seen?" followed by a list of Solution card numbers, each next to a symbol, e.g. 11, 25, 3, 1, 23, 2, 21, 5, 30, 19; "Sort this card back into the stack of Solution cards immediately afterwards!").
On what is the code symbol to be seen?
Good question! To answer it you must look closely at the pictures on the Riddle cards etc. All kinds of locked objects are found there. All these objects are marked with a symbol. In our example it is about the number pad with the symbol on it. So you look on the Solution card next to the number pad and see that you should now look for Solution card 3 in the stack. Attention: you must see the object with the symbol on a Riddle card etc. in order to be able to open it. You cannot open anything you have not yet found – just like in a real escape room.
Is the code really right?
Then the Solution card tells you how to continue. You will, for example, find one or more new Riddle cards, which you may immediately look for in the stack of Riddle cards and look at.
Is the code after all wrong?
Well, then you made a mistake and must think again to arrive at a different code.
IMPORTANT: Whether wrong or right – sort all Solution cards back into the stack of Solution cards. All codes can be decoded logically. So it is not about simply trying out all possible combinations on the disk.
Do You Need Help?
Of course the game can also give you help if you get stuck. For every code there are three matching Help cards, which you recognize by the symbol on the back. Each Help card "1st HINT" tells you which game material you must have found for the riddle, as well as a first useful hint. The Help cards "2nd HINT" then help you somewhat more concretely. The Help cards "SOLUTION" give you the solution to the riddle.
IMPORTANT: Always take Help cards for one particular riddle. The riddles are mostly marked with a symbol (analogous to the decoder disk). It does not help you to use Help cards if you have not yet found a riddle for the corresponding symbol.
So have a little patience – many riddles can only be solved with the help of several Riddle cards. You do not always have everything at hand immediately. Sometimes you must first deal with other riddles to get new game material. But do not be afraid to use Help cards if you ever get stuck. Used Help cards you place on an open discard pile.
Additional Game Material
In addition to the included game material you need paper and pens to take notes, and scissors. You also need a clock/stopwatch.
IMPORTANT: You may write on, fold or cut up the material ... Everything is allowed and sometimes even necessary. You can play the game only once – afterwards you know all riddles and no longer need the game material! This makes especially special and varied riddles possible.
When Does the Game End?
The game ends when you have cracked the last riddle and the vault. A card will tell you this.
At the start of the game start a stopwatch so you know how long you took. In the following table you can look up how good you were. Regarding the number of Help cards used, of course only the cards that revealed new hints/solutions to you count. If a Help card only said something you already knew anyway, that Help card does not count for the rating.
| No Help cards | 1–2 Help cards | 3–5 Help cards | 6–10 Help cards | > 10 Help cards | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ≤ 60 min. | 10 stars | 8 stars | 7 stars | 5 stars | 4 stars |
| ≤ 90 min. | 9 stars | 7 stars | 6 stars | 4 stars | 3 stars |
| ≤ 120 min. | 8 stars | 6 stars | 5 stars | 3 stars | 2 stars |
| > 120 min. | 7 stars | 5 stars | 4 stars | 2 stars | 1 star |
One Last Tip
Game material that you have successfully used to solve a riddle is best put aside. That way you keep a better overview and get less confused. Only the illustrations of the locations are needed for several riddles.
The Game Begins
What are you waiting for? Start the stopwatch now and solve the case. From now on you may look at the closed folding sheet "Surveillance Van" from the outside and begin puzzling. During the game do not hesitate to look something up in the manual again if something is unclear.
You may only turn this page once you have opened George Reed's vault.
Final Puzzle (Page 8)
Of course you have heard of Dr. Arthur Funbeq. Exactly 10 years ago it was you whom he locked in an "abandoned cabin", somewhat later in a "forbidden castle" and likewise in his "sinister villa". And when you were ready 5 years ago for a "return to the abandoned cabin", he again played his nasty game with you. Luckily he is now finally behind bars. Jane is and remains reliable.
While your team stows the last bundles of money and gold bars, you notice the safe-deposit boxes on the back wall of the vault. What might they hold? All boxes are locked and bear a three-digit number. On the floor of the vault you discover a small note with a promising message. "At last someone rhyming again!", you think with a smile and try to find the correct box.
Poem on the note (translated; the German original rhymes):
Only the one can be opened – do you find the one I mean? You need three digits to find it. You should stop wasting time. Better still, get it running, pull together once more. First the clock needs a pendulum. But where can you find it? It is gone – as if erased! Have you tried that? Remove the rubber, hold the cardboard, slide it over the clock flap. The pendulum now points to a number. The next one is no torment either. Sideways the X points to it. Look closely, or you will see nothing! For the next one turn time around and read what is left of the eraser. Find the compartment that you think combines all three digits on the sign.
