Game board, 10 category cards, 300 question cards containing 1,500 questions, 25 red cover cards, 25 black/yellow player cover cards, rules.
Object of the Game
Be the first player to complete a Line Score or score the most points.
Game Board Set Up
The game board features five category columns and 25 boxes, which make up the playing field. To set up the game board, randomly select five of the 10 category cards and display them across the top of the game board. Each category column contains boxes valued at 100, 200, 300, 400 and 500 points. The 100-point questions are the easiest and 500 the hardest.
Next, shuffle the red cover cards and place one over each of the 25 boxes on the game board with the text face down.
Each player picks a color (yellow or black) and will use these color cards to indicate boxes they win.
Game Play
The game begins with a coin toss; the winner gets to select the first box.
For the first round only, the player that goes first is given the chance to answer a maximum of one question correctly. If player #1 answers the question correctly, the player covers that box with his team cover card and passes to player #2. If incorrectly answered, play passes to player #2.
Player #2 is then given the chance to answer a maximum of two questions correctly. If player #2 answers the first question correctly, the player covers that box with their team cover card and attempts to answer the second question. If player #2 answers the first question incorrectly, play passes back to player #1 who will then try to keep control of the board with correct answers.
(Note: The game starts out in this fashion so each player has a chance to establish board position before a player attempts to "run the board." Neither player can win the game on their first turn, giving both players a chance to play.)
After each player has had an initial turn, the player that went first has control of the board and can answer questions until a question is answered incorrectly, OR until that player uncovers a turnover (see "Breaks of the Game") OR completes a 5-box sequence called a Line Score.
When a player selects a box, that player removes the red cover card on that box to see if there is a "Break of the Game" on the other side. (Note: Be sure to turn over the red cover card to see if there is a "Break of the Game" on the other side before answering.) As long as the player correctly answers questions, he retains control of the board. When a question is answered incorrectly, play passes to the opponent.
Breaks of the Game
On the backs of five of the 25 red cover cards there are 2 Turnovers, 2 Double Plays, and 1 Grand Slam. Note: Each card is used one time only.
Turnover – When a player selects a box and flips over a red cover card and "TURNOVER" appears, that player does not get a chance to answer a question and play passes to the opponent. Cover the box with a blank red cover card -- the box remains in play.
Note: If there aren't any blank red cover cards available, place the "TURNOVER" card face up on the square to be replaced at a later time.
Double Play – The "DOUBLE PLAY" card gives the player a second chance to answer a question correctly. Upon turning over the red cover card and before the question is read, the player has to decide if he wants to use the "DOUBLE PLAY" for that question or save it for later in the game. If used later in the game, the player must announce that he intends to use the "DOUBLE PLAY" before reading the question. The "DOUBLE PLAY" card can only be used once.
Note: If the player chooses to use the card and answers correctly or incorrectly, he loses the card.
Grand Slam – The most valuable break in the game. It awards the player four times the point value of that box if the player answers the question correctly. If the question is answered incorrectly the "GRAND SLAM" is no longer available to either player. Cover the box with a blank red card -- the box remains in play.
Other Game Play Options
Blitz Games – Be the first to reach a designated point total -- i.e. 3,000 or 4,000. Agree on the point total prior to the start of the game.
By The Clock – Select a time limit of 10 to 20 minutes for the game and play to the whistle. The player in the lead when time expires is the winner.
Note: Like all sports fans, we love records and seeing them broken. However, we don't love the frequency with which players change teams. Of the 1,500 questions in this edition of ESPN All Sports Trivia Challenge, some may pertain to records that were broken or players who went on to new teams after the questions were written. Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the information presented herein. However, we cannot be held responsible for any such errors due to broken records or team, player and staff changes.
How to Score & Win
The player with the most points wins. The fastest way to do that is to complete a Line Score. A Line Score occurs when a player wins boxes in a five-box sequence, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. If this is done the player is awarded 3,000 points, and wins the game. (Note: A Line Score doubles the value of that 5-box sequence.) If neither player achieves a Line Score, the player with the most total points wins when all the boxes are covered.
Will you go for the Line Score? Will you try to block your opponent from doing the same? The game clock is ticking. There can only be one champion. Do you have what it takes to win?
