Cards
There are two types of cards in Elemental Duel:
Element cards: These cards are the ones players have during each of the game rounds. Each will have a set equal to their opponent's ones. Water, fire and plant are regular elements while light and darkness are special elements. These cards contain an illustration that shows what type it is, a force value (used to take the lead) and an icon that shows the type of elements to be beat (Image 1).
Territory cards: In each round, both players will compete to conquer one of them. These cards show the number of icons contributed, and a condition to improve the territory that gives the most icons. These cards show the illustration of the terrain, the value in icons and double the points on the back. A star appears in certain cases (Image 2).
Purpose of the Game
Elemental Duel can be won in 3 different ways:
- Conquering the 3 territories with a star.
- Conquering the 4 territories of one type (Forest, spring or volcano).
- Obtaining the most icons in 2 of the 3 territory types, if the above conditions have not been met.
Preparation
- Each player chooses a set of element cards.
- Shuffle and place the territory cards in the centre of the table face up (for the part of a single icon).
Game Round
In each round, players will compete for the visible card from the territory deck. The first attacker will be a randomly chosen player.
The attacker places a face-down card in front of them followed by a face-up card. These will be their two options for the duel (Image 3).
The defender chooses one of their cards and places it face-down in front of them, after seeing one of their attacker's visible cards.
The attacker then decides whether to play with the visible card or the one that is face-down, taking the other card into their hand again. Once chosen, the defender turns their card and compares both cards for the duel knowing that:
- Fire can beat plant (Image 4).
- Plant can beat water.
- Water can beat fire.
- Darkness beats all regular elements.
- Light defeats darkness or loses against the rest of the elements.
If you win with a regular element you take the card. And if it is the same element as the territory, the card is turned over and gets more icons (Images 4-5).
If you win with darkness you pick up the territory card.
If you win with light, you pick up the territory card being played and turn it over as if you won with a card of the same territory element.
In the event that both players use the same element, its value is compared. Whoever has the highest value wins the duel. If both have the same value, they tie the duel, and the defender gets to keep the territory.
At the end of the duel, each player turns the card they have played face up and the territory conquered, so that players can see what their opponent has played at all times and how many icons they have accumulated (Image 5).
End of the Game
The game can end in 3 different ways:
- Automatically as soon as someone gets the 3 territories with a star.
- Automatically as soon as someone gets the 4 territories of the same element.
If neither of these situations happens, the game ends after 12 rounds whenever there are no territories left (the last card is discarded and not played). At that point, each player compares the icons they have obtained of each type with their opponent. Whoever has the most icons from one type wins this territory. Whenever there is a tie, whoever has the territory with a star is the winner. Whoever manages to have the majority in 2 of the 3 territories will win the game.
For example, Aurora has 4 fire icons while Javi has 2. Aurora has most icons, therefore conquering the territory of fire.
