The Game

"El Melómano" is a board game for two or more participants. It can be played individually or in teams. It is a game about Spanish-language music, where you have to sing and answer questions to win.

Game Dynamics

The game can be played in teams or individually; the rules apply to both cases. We nonetheless recommend playing in teams. Each team has its own board (it may choose any of the 4 designs available).

Place the "musical cards" face down in the play area. We recommend shuffling the cards before starting the game.

The game begins with the team where the owner of the game is seated or, failing that, the person who proposed playing it.

The starting team draws the first card from the pile, starts the hourglass (reloj de arena) and begins its turn. The team has 2 minutes to sing the excerpt of the song, complete the 2 missing words, and answer the four questions on the card.

One card is played per team per turn, and then the turn passes to the team on the left.

The Cards

Each card contains an excerpt from the lyrics of a song and four questions related to it. The excerpt has two missing words. The participant must fill in both spaces correctly to earn 1 point; if only one of the two words is answered, no point is earned.

Each question answered correctly is worth 1 point. Once the card is finished, the points obtained are added up and, depending on the result, a Disc is earned and placed on the team's board.

The team on the right is in charge of checking the answers in the answer book. Once all the prompts have been answered, the team is told how many points were obtained.

Discs

There are three types of discs: silver, gold and platinum.

• Silver: earned by scoring 3 points on a card. Three silver discs may be exchanged for one gold disc.
• Gold: earned by scoring 4 points on a card. Three gold discs may be exchanged for one platinum disc.
• Platinum: earned by scoring all 5 points on a card.

Getting three platinum discs wins the game. If a card scores fewer than three points, no disc of any kind is earned.

Variant: Alternative Disc Thresholds

If the game proves difficult, we suggest lowering the number of correct answers needed to earn a silver disc. In this variant, scoring either 2 or 3 points on a card earns a silver disc.

Discs in this mode:

• Silver: earned by scoring 2 or 3 points on a card. Three silver discs may be exchanged for one gold disc.
• Gold: earned by scoring 4 points on a card. Three gold discs may be exchanged for one platinum disc.
• Platinum: earned by scoring all 5 points on a card.

The team that first gets three platinum discs wins the game.

Answer Book

The answer book lists, for each card number, the two missing words of the lyric excerpt (separated by a slash), followed by the answers to the card's four questions, numbered 1 to 4 as printed. Song titles, artist names and lyric words are kept in Spanish, as printed. Card numbers are given as plain three-digit numbers; on some pages the printing puts a closing parenthesis after the number (for example "193)"), which is dropped here. Words that the printed booklet splits across two lines with a hyphen are rejoined. Entries marked [sic] are printed as shown in the original and have not been corrected.
