3 ice rings, 35 sparkling stones (7 each in 5 colors), 1 dragon egg, 1 nest tile, 1 Dragon Mom, 1 treasure chest, 48 amulet cards, 1 rulebook

Before the First Game

Carefully separate the cardboard pieces from the surrounds. The surrounds are not required and can be disposed of.

Assemble the treasure chest as illustrated.

Tip: The treasure chest should stay assembled at the end of the game. It will fit back in the box.

Setup

Stack the 3 ice rings to make a small ice column and place the nest tile inside of it.

Fill the ice column with sparkling stones. Carefully place the dragon egg on top of the sparkling stones. Shuffle all the amulet cards and put them in a face-down deck. Keep Dragon Mom and the treasure chest handy.

How to Play

The bravest player begins and is the fire-breather this round. Dragon Mom and the treasure chest are placed in front of them.

All other players are the dragon children and each receives 3 amulet cards face-up in front of them.

A round consists of two phases:

  1. Fire Breathing (only for the fire-breather)
  2. Collecting Sparkling Stones (all players)

1. Fire Breathing

The fire-breather carefully takes the top ice ring off. The egg should stay on top. Then they place the ice ring aside.

Did the egg fall down?

Oh no! Carefully place the egg on the nest again. If this causes more sparkling stone to fall down, leave them where they fall. Place Dragon Mom's feet in one of the small holes in the treasure chest.

2. Collecting Sparkling Stones

All players collect sparkling stones until there are none left. Then the fire-breather takes the next ice ring from the nest and the game continues as described. If Dragon Mom is on the treasure chest, she stays there until the end of the round.

Starting with the dragon child to the left of the fire-breather, all players (including the fire-breather) take turns collecting sparkling stones.

Important: Sparkling stones that are still on the nest tile after the 3rd ice ring has been taken off cannot be collected.

Collection Rules for Dragon Children:

  • Place one sparkling stone per turn on a matching colored empty space on one of your amulet cards.
  • Some amulet cards show rainbow sparkling stones. Any color sparkling stone can be placed here.
  • If there are no more matching sparkling stones left, take a fallen sparkling stone of your choice and place it aside.
  • Sparkling stones on an amulet card may be moved to another valid spot on a card.
  • Once an amulet card has been completed, place it face-down in front of you. Sparkling stones on this card are set aside. Then draw a new card and place it face-up in front of you.

Collection Rules for the Fire-Breather:

  • The fire-breather may take two sparkling stones per turn and place them in the treasure chest, to keep them out of reach of the Dragon Children.

Exception: If the fire-breather let the egg fall, then they may only collect one sparkling stone and place it in the treasure chest.

End of the Round

The round ends once the third ice ring has been taken off the nest and all the fallen sparkling stones have been collected.

All incomplete amulet cards are placed at the bottom of the deck. Collect all of the sparkling stones. Dragon Mom and the emptied treasure chest are passed to the next player in a clockwise direction. The frozen sparkling stone nest with the dragon egg is rebuilt as described, with all sparkling stones, and a new round begins.

End of the Game

The game ends when every player has been the fire-breather once. If playing with only two players, you may optionally play until each player has been fire-breather twice.

Now add up the points on the amulet cards you have collected.

The player with the most points wins. If there is a tie, the tied players share the win.

Tip: If you also have "Dragon's Breath" you can combine the two games. "Dragon's Breath" and "Dragon's Breath – The Hatching" can be combined to allow for play for 5 players. Rules for the combined game can be found on www.haba.de/dragons-breath.
