Preparation
-
Shuffle the tiles, then randomly deal out 5 tiles to each player. Draw one more tile, then place it face up in the center of the table. Lastly, randomly draw 5 additional tiles from the stack: these tiles will not be used in the game.
-
Draw lots to decide who will play the rows and who will play the columns. The younger magician starts the game.
The Game
-
In your turn, put down a tile from your hand to any space adjacent to the existing tiles. You take turns putting down tiles into an imaginary grid of 5 by 5, with the starting tile at the center, until the grid is full (i.e. the game ends when the 5 by 5 grid is full). You cannot put tiles on top of other tiles.
-
After playing a tile, draw one tile from the remaining stack of tiles, if possible. Once the stack runs out, you cannot draw.
Scoring
-
The "rows" magician scores for the rows, while the "columns" magician scores for the columns.
-
The more same numbered cards a row or column has in it, the stronger it becomes. The order of strength is:
5 of the same number > 4 of the same number > 3 of the same number > 2 pairs of the same number > 1 pair of the same number > all different numbers
-
If two or more rows/columns have the same strength order, the one with the higher numbered combination is stronger than the other.
-
Compare the weakest row with the weakest column to decide the winner. If tied, compare the next weakest ones.
