Game Rules
Contents & Setup
- Place the game board (A) on the table.
- Each player chooses a set of 7 kingdom tiles (B) to use during the game.
- Randomly place a dragon tile (C) in front of each of the 5 dragon caves.
- The youngest player starts the game by placing 4 dragon eggs on to empty spaces within the 6x6 centre grid of the game board. The other player then places the remaining 4 dragon eggs following the same rules (D).
How to Play
Starting with the player who first placed the dragon eggs, players take turns placing kingdom tiles on to the empty spaces on the game board according to the rules below.
If a kingdom tile cannot be placed correctly, play passes to your opponent.
Placing Kingdom Tiles (Example game: moves 1-12)
The first kingdom tile placed by each player must cover a corner square. Each new kingdom tile must cover an empty corner square or touch at least one other piece of the same colour along an edge (covered by a dragon tile or not).
Each kingdom tile you place on the game board adds 5 points to your score: 1 point for each of the 4 segments that make up a kingdom tile and 1 additional point for the castle.
When you place your kingdom tile on top of a dragon egg, additional actions need to be made.
Special Actions
Breaking eggs (Example game: move 6)
When you place your kingdom tile on top of a dragon egg, without its hole surrounding the dragon egg, the dragon egg is broken (6a). Remove the broken dragon egg from the game board and place it in front of you (6b), this action will deduct 1 point from your score at the end of the game.
Summoning a dragon (Example game: moves 4, 7, 8, 10, 11)
When you place your kingdom tile on top of a dragon egg, with its hole surrounding the dragon egg, the next dragon is summoned (4a, 7a, 8a, 10a, 11a). The player who placed the kingdom tile must take the first dragon tile in line (cave 1 -> cave 2 -> cave 3 -> cave 4 -> cave 5). Place the dragon tile according to the rules below (4b, 7b, 10b, 11b), or remove it from the game if the dragon tile cannot be placed correctly (8b).
Each dragon tile must cover 5 segments of previously placed kingdom tiles (your opponent's, your own or a combination of both). If space permits, dragon tiles must be placed even if they cover your own kingdom tiles (7b).
Segments of a kingdom tile and castles covered by a dragon tile are worth 0 points.
Once all of the dragons have left their caves, the game continues without anymore dragons being summoned.
End of the Game
When both players cannot place a kingdom tile according to the rules, the game ends.
Players count their score taking into account the following rules:
- A segment of a kingdom tile, not covered by a dragon tile, is 1 point.
- A castle, not covered by a dragon tile, is an additional +1 point.
- Each broken dragon egg in front of you is -1 point.
- Segments of a kingdom tile and castles, covered by a dragon tile, are worth 0 points.
The player with the highest score wins the game.
