Aerial Show Components
- 10 Pterodactyls
- 5 Aviary boards, printed on both sides
Aerial Show Setup
Each player takes an Aviary board and places it above their Zoo board.
Choose a side for the game (all players must use the same side).
Put the number of base-game dinosaurs in the draw bag according to the number of players. Then each player draws 2 dinosaurs from the bag and places them face down, one on each of the "Egg" spaces of the Aviary. Finally, add 2 Pterodactyls per player to the bag (even in a 2-player game).
Playing with Pterodactyls
A new species of dinosaur has arrived: Pterodactyls. These dinosaurs can only be placed in the mountain areas of the Aviary. Once setup is complete, the mountains cannot receive any other type of dinosaur. When players place Pterodactyls, they ignore the requirements of the placement die.
The first Pterodactyl of each player can only be placed on a space of the first mountain (marked 1). Once a Pterodactyl is on a mountain, the next mountain (connected by a suspension bridge) becomes available and can from then on receive Pterodactyls.
Note: like all dinosaurs, Pterodactyls can be placed in the River, on your Zoo board.
When you place a Pterodactyl, trigger an effect:
- [Egg icon]: Take the dinosaur placed on this Egg and place it in a Pen of your choice or in the River. The placement die requirement does not apply to this dinosaur.
Before counting victory points at the end of the game, return all dinosaurs that are still on Eggs to the box. They score no victory points.
- [3/7 icon]: At the end of the game, receive the indicated amount of victory points.
- [Crossed-out placement die icon]: The placement die requirements no longer apply to you for the rest of the game.
- [Pterodactyl icon] = 3: At the end of the game, receive 3 victory points for each Pterodactyl in the Zoo of the player to your left.
- [Pink dinosaur icon] = 1: At the end of the game, receive 1 additional victory point for each Pen in your Zoo that contains (at least) one dinosaur of this species.
Marina Components
- 10 Plesiosaurs
- 5 Marina boards, printed on both sides
Marina Setup
In addition to the usual dinosaurs, add 2 Plesiosaurs per player to the bag. Each player receives a Marina board, which is placed below their Zoo board.
Choose a side to use (all players must use the same side). With this expansion, each player buys and places 7 dinosaurs per round.
Playing with Plesiosaurs
When a player decides to place a Plesiosaur, they must place it in the River of their Zoo. Plesiosaurs can always be placed, regardless of the face of the placement die.
Once a Plesiosaur is in the River, it can move onto the Marina board. The Marina consists of several River segments separated by Bridges. When a player places a dinosaur shown on a Bridge in their Zoo, their Plesiosaur beside that Bridge may pass under it. Only Plesiosaurs can move along the River. Several Plesiosaurs can be moved at the same time if they are on the same River segment.
Example: the player places a T-Rex in their Zoo and may move their two Plesiosaurs to the next River segment.
One side of the Marina has a fork in the River, just after the first Bridge. Players are never forced to move their Plesiosaurs under a Bridge, so they may keep their Plesiosaurs at the fork until they can move them in the direction they prefer.
At the end of the game, each Plesiosaur scores victory points according to its position in the River. The point value of each River segment is printed on the Marina board.
Example from the booklet: the player receives 9 victory points (2+2+5) for their three Plesiosaurs on the Marina. The Plesiosaur that remained on the Zoo's space scores only 1 victory point, like any other dinosaur placed there.
Marina 2-Player Variant
A 2-player game with the Marina is different. During setup, place 8 Plesiosaurs in the bag. During the first two rounds, each player draws 8 dinosaurs and places 4 in their Zoo. During the next two rounds, each player draws 6 dinosaurs and places 3 in their Zoo. In this way, each player will place a total of 14 dinosaurs.
Dinosaurs! (or not?)
The prehistoric animals presented in the Aerial Show and Marina expansions are fascinating animals! However, contrary to popular belief and their appearance, they are not Dinosaurs (they do not belong to the order Dinosauria). Pterodactyls are a genus of the order Pterosauria, and the Plesiosaur is a name that can be given to animals of the order Plesiosauria.
However, to make game terms easier and uniform, these majestic animals are considered Dinosaurs, except where the rules make specific reference to them!
Playing with Both Expansions
Set up the Aerial Show first, then set up the Marina. During the game, each player buys and places 7 dinosaurs per round.
In 2-player games, during the first two rounds each player buys 8 dinosaurs and places 4 in their Zoo. In the next two rounds, each player buys 6 dinosaurs and places 3 in their Zoo.
