Contents

  • 7 drawing boards
  • 70 word cards
  • 7 markers
  • 24 score tokens
  • 1 token
  • 1 special die

Setup

  1. Shuffle the word cards. Take 2 cards (face down) for each player and form them into a stack. Place the stack face down on one side of the table, and return the remaining cards to the box.

Example: with five players, the stack will consist of 10 cards.

Playing with three or four players: prepare a stack of 12 cards.

  2. Give each player a drawing board and a marker. Put any extra drawing boards and markers back in the box.

  3. Set the score tokens aside — they will be needed later.

  4. Place the token and the die in the center of the table so that every player can reach them.

Playing with three players: put the token back in the box (only the die is used).

How to Play

In the first round of the game, the oldest player becomes the guesser, and everyone else becomes an artist.

In each round, the players go through the following steps, in order:

  1. Choose the Word
  2. Drawing
  3. Guessing and Scoring
  4. End of Round

1. Choose the Word

The guesser closes their eyes and keeps them closed until step (3) Guessing and Scoring. The player sitting to the left of the guesser takes the top card from the stack and lays it face up on the table. Each card shows a list of seven numbered words. The guesser calls out any number from 1 to 7 — the word next to that number on the card will be the one guessed this round. Make sure everyone except the guesser sees the card.

Careful! Turn the card face down! The guesser must not learn this word before the end of step (3) Guessing and Scoring.

Note: when playing with children, skip words marked with a "*" (there is one per card). Instead, the guesser should call out a different number.

Example: *Atlas.

Example: this round, Sonya is the guesser. She calls out "4." That means the word to be guessed this round is "bull."

Note: the rules use the term "word," although a card entry may actually show two words (e.g., "Star Wars") or more.

Sample word card:

#Word
1Easter egg
2roller coaster
3bookworm
4bull
5oasis
6*Amazon
7fox

2. Drawing

The guesser says "Go!" — each artist picks up their drawing board and marker and starts drawing the secret word.

  1. The artist who finishes drawing first grabs the token (see the exception for three-player games below), sets it in front of themselves, and turns their drawing board face down. The token stays with this artist until the end of the round.
  2. The artist who finishes drawing second grabs the die, turns their drawing board face down, and starts rolling the die as fast as they can, over and over, until a face with a symbol comes up. As soon as that happens, they shout "Stop!" All the other artists immediately stop drawing and turn their drawing boards face down. The artist who rolled the die keeps it.

Icon notes:

  • Whoever finishes their drawing first takes the token.
  • Whoever finishes their drawing second rolls the die.
  • Everyone else stops drawing as soon as the symbol is rolled!

Playing with three players: since the token isn't used, the artist who finishes drawing first grabs the die and starts rolling it.

3. Guessing and Scoring

Careful! Make sure all the drawing boards are face down. Now the guesser opens their eyes!

  1. The artist holding the token (see the exception for three-player games below) shows their drawing first. The guesser makes one guess, and only one. If it is correct, both that artist and the guesser score 1 point. Then step (4) End of Round begins.
  2. If the guess was wrong, the artist who took the die shows their drawing next, and the guesser makes another guess. If this guess is correct, both that artist and the guesser score 1 point. Then step (4) End of Round begins.
  3. If the guesser is wrong again, all the remaining artists (in three- and four-player games, only one artist will remain) show their drawings at the same time, and the guesser makes their last guess. If it is correct, all of those artists and the guesser score 1 point. If the guesser is wrong again, nobody scores any points this round.

Note: every time a guess is correct, the scoring players take score tokens showing "1" and add them to their score pile in front of them. If there are no more "1" score tokens left in the supply, players must exchange the tokens they hold for "3" tokens.

Rare case: if the supply of score tokens runs out, use any suitable objects in their place.

Playing with three players: since the token isn't used, the artist who took the die shows their drawing first.

Example (the word is "bull"):

Artists: 1. Artyom [holds the token] 2. Rita [holds the die] 3. Yana and Demyan

Guesser: Kazimir

  1. Artyom shows his drawing. Kazimir guesses "helmet!" — wrong.
  2. Rita shows her drawing. Kazimir guesses "ghost!" — wrong.
  3. Yana and Demyan show their drawings at the same time. Kazimir guesses "bull!" — correct.

Since Kazimir couldn't identify either Artyom's or Rita's drawing, Yana and Demyan show their drawings at the same time. This time Kazimir's guess is correct, so Yana, Demyan, and Kazimir each score 1 point.

Yana: 1 point Demyan: 1 point Kazimir (the guesser): 1 point

4. End of Round

Return the token and the die to the center of the table. Wipe all the drawings off the drawing boards. Set the played card aside.

The guesser for the next round is the player sitting to the left of the previous guesser (the role passes clockwise).

End of Game

The game ends after the round in which the last card from the stack is played.

Each player adds up the points they scored.

The player with the most points wins. In case of a tie, the tied players share the win.

Clarifications

  • Artists may not draw letters or numbers. If an artist's drawing shows letters or numbers, restart the round using a new card from the box.
  • Artists may not draw symbols — for example, arrows, currency symbols, musical notes, or mathematical symbols (plus, minus, etc.).
  • The guesser must say at least the word (or words) printed on the card (see the exceptions above). The guess "decorative pillow" is correct for the word "pillow," but "clock" is not correct if the secret word is "stopwatch."
  • All the words on the cards are nouns — names of things or people. But if the guesser says a related verb, it counts as a correct guess. The guess "someone is diving" counts as correct for the word "diver."
  • If the guesser says the secret word in its plural form, it counts as a correct guess. The guess "teeth" counts as correct if the secret word is "tooth."
  • Don't be too strict — count a guess as correct if it means practically the same thing as the word on the card. Avoid arguments! The game is meant to be fun!
  • If two or more players grab for the token at the same time, the youngest player gets it, while the die goes to whichever player is next oldest (even if a third player had already picked up the die).
  • Hints are not allowed!

If you set a drawing board face down on the table, this can smudge part of your drawing or even erase it entirely. So when you turn your drawing board over, slide your marker between the board and the table's surface first.
