Assembly

The Napkin Dispenser (card holder) and the Donut Rack (tile holder) are each built from punchboard pieces before the first game. The rulebook shows the assembly as a sequence of numbered diagrams: the Napkin Dispenser in five steps, and the Donut Rack in seven steps.

Preparation

  1. Place the cross-shaped Starting Donut tile in the middle of the table. This is the beginning of the Display Case in the donut shop. Be sure to leave plenty of room on all sides because you will be adding tiles all around it during the course of the game.
  2. Shuffle the Donut tiles. Return two tiles to the game box unseen, then deal one Donut tile to each player face-down.
  3. Reveal two Donut tiles and place them in the front spaces of the Donut Rack.
  4. Place the other Donut tiles face-down into the rear spaces of the Donut Rack.
  5. Shuffle the Order cards. Return two cards to the box unseen, then deal one card to each player face-down.
  6. Place the other Order cards in the Napkin Dispenser face-down.
  7. Reveal two Order cards from the Napkin Dispenser and place them beside it.
  8. Sort the Donut Box tiles into piles by size and place them within easy reach.
  9. Give one smallest Donut Box (20 cent value) to each player. This is a box that only they can use. Any leftover smallest Donut Box tiles are available for any player to use.
  10. Place the Money tokens within easy reach.
  11. The player who most recently ate a donut is the Starting Player.

Game Overview

In Donut Shop, players take turns placing Donut tiles in the Display Case, earning money by connecting groups of the same type of donut.

You can earn extra money by boxing up donuts to fulfill a customer's Order card. You might even earn a bonus from special orders that include coffee, or donuts with sprinkles!

At the end of the game, the player who has earned the most money wins!

Player Turn

Your turn consists of these steps:

  1. Add a Donut tile to the Display Case
  2. Score for donut placement
  3. Box donuts (optional)
  4. Draw a new Donut tile and Order card

After you have completed these steps, the next player in clockwise order takes their turn.

1. Add a Donut tile to the Display Case

Take the Donut tile from your hand and add it to the Display Case. Follow these rules when placing a new Donut tile:

A. Line up neatly. You must place the tile so that both donuts on one side of the tile are beside two donuts on a single tile. You may not place a tile so that it is across two tiles on a single side.

B. No overlapping. You cannot place Donut tiles on top of other tiles.

C. No need to match. The donuts on the tile do not need to match with the donuts on tiles beside it (although a match might earn you more money).

2. Score for donut placement

A. Once you have placed the Donut tile in the Display Case, choose one type of donut on that tile to score.

B. Score 5 cents for each donut of that type on the Donut tile, plus every donut of the same type in the Display Case that is orthogonally (no diagonals) connected to that tile in a group.

You may use the donut holes on your tile to choose any donut type (see Donut Holes).

Note! Sprinkles don't change the type of donut — they're just an extra on top! For example, if a donut is a Blue Frosted with Sprinkles, it still counts as a Blue Frosted when scoring a group.

3. Box donuts (optional)

You now have an opportunity to box donuts in the display case.

First, choose the Donut Box size that you wish to use. Then, discard Order cards from your hand to match each donut type you wish to box. Next, place the Donut Box over those unboxed donuts in the Display Case. Finally, score the number of cents on that box.

Boxes may not overlap with another box or hang off the edge of a tile. Donuts covered by boxes can no longer be counted when scoring for Donut Placement.

Note! You can discard any two Order cards of the same donut type to use as a wild card for any other donut type.

Note! You may only use one box per turn. The box can be one from the common supply, or you can use the box you received during Preparation.

Box Donuts Example: You have an Order card for Blue Frosted Donuts and one for Banana Cream Donuts. You discard both to fill a 6-Pack Box, covering a group of four Banana Cream donuts and a group of two Blue Frosted donuts. Completing this box earns you 30 cents.

Sprinkles

Some Order cards earn you an extra 10 cents when you include certain types of donuts with sprinkles in your box. You can use multiple Order cards with sprinkles to score different types of sprinkled donuts. You can always use an Order card with sprinkles to box a type of donut without sprinkles, but you will not get the bonus.

Note! If you use a sprinkle card together with another as a wild card, you do not receive a sprinkle bonus from that card.

Note! You may use more than one Order card of the same donut type, which can be helpful to unlock coffee bonuses.

Sprinkles Example: Your Order cards are Maple Frosted and Banana Cream, so you box three Maple Frosted donuts and one Banana Cream with Sprinkles donut. You earn 20 cents for filling a 4-Pack Box, plus an extra 10 cents for using the Sprinkled Banana Cream Order card. However, you do not score the extra 10 cents for using the Sprinkled Maple Frosted Order card because none of those have sprinkles.

Coffee

Some Order cards also include requests for coffee that can earn you extra coins when boxing donuts. If you box donuts using two or three Order cards with coffee, you earn 15 or 25 cents, respectively. You do not receive a bonus if you use only one Order card with coffee.

Donut Holes

A pile of donut holes is "wild", meaning you can count it as any type of donut you wish whenever you use it to earn money. You can even choose one donut type when scoring for donut placement, and a different type when boxing donuts.

4. Draw a new Donut tile AND Order card

After scoring (and optionally boxing), you must take a new Donut tile and a new Order card.

You can choose between:

A. A known Order and an unknown Donut. Choose one of the two face-up Order cards to keep. Replace it with a new one from the Napkin Dispenser. Then draw a Donut tile from the rear of the Donut Rack to keep.

OR

B. A known Donut and an unknown Order. Choose one of the two face-up Donut tiles to keep. Replace it with a new one from the rear of the Donut Rack. Then draw an Order card from the Napkin Dispenser to keep.

Note! You MUST take one of the face-up cards or tiles first, then draw the other type second.

Note! There is no limit to the number of Order cards you can have in your hand.

Game End

When there are no more Donut tiles or Order cards left in the draw stacks, one more round is played. In that round, each player takes a turn without drawing any new cards or tiles.

The player with the most money at the end of the game wins. If there is a tie, the tied player with the most Order cards left in their hand wins. If there is still a tie, the tied players share the victory.
