Setup

Use the image below to set up the game. Set up for the current number of players and put the remaining cards and tokens back in the box.

The Galaxy Board: Place the Galaxy board in the center of the play area.

Space Mountain Dice Launcher: See the assembly instructions on the back of the booklet.

Navigation Dice: No separate setup instruction is printed; see Starting the Game.

Fuel Gauge: Place the red Fuel Gauge clip at 6. See the assembly instructions on the back of the booklet.

Starports: Build the 5 Starports and place the 5 Starports as desired on the Starport icons. Built Starports are optional to use in gameplay.

Encounter Tokens: Mix up the Encounter tokens and place face down on each empty Encounter token space (marked with an exclamation mark) on the Galaxy board.

Space Mountain Rockets: Each player chooses a Rocket. Place the Rocket on the Starport icon of the matching color. The Rocket must face 1 of the 4 sides (not diagonally).

Mission Cards (5 per player): Separate the Mission cards into sets by letter (A, B, C, D, E) and shuffle each set individually. Each player is given 1 Mission card from each set and places them face up in front of them. Place the Missions in alphabetical order from left to right.

Mission Marker Pool: Place to the side of the board where everyone can reach them.

Starport Tokens: Each player places 1 Starport token of each color in front of them. All players place the Starport token that matches their color on the "Approved For Travel" side; place all other Starport tokens on the "Welcome to Space Mountain" side.

See the back of the booklet for the Starport, Space Mountain Dice Launcher, and Fuel Gauge assembly instructions.

Starting the Game

The first player is the person who most recently rode Space Mountain. If there is a tie, the youngest player goes first. Give the Space Mountain Dice Launcher, the 3 Navigation dice, and the Fuel Gauge to the first player. This player is called the Active Player.

Gameplay

The Active Player rolls the Navigation dice to determine how everyone's Rockets move and how much fuel, if any, is used. Once all movement and encounters are resolved, each player must decide if they want to stop (Refuel) or keeping going (All Systems Go!). Players who decide to stop keep their Missions safe. If the Fuel Gauge ever drops to 1, all players who are still active have to reset their Missions. Once everyone stops [and] the Fuel Gauge hits 1, the Dice Launcher, Navigation dice, and Fuel Gauge move to the player to the left. They become the new Active Player and start a new round.

Playing a Round

Step 1: Plan Your Turn

The Active Player asks whether players want to continue (All Systems Go!) or stop (Refuel). Each player, including the Active Player, must state their intention out loud.

Players who choose All Systems Go! are ready for Step 2.

Players who choose to Refuel remove their Rocket from the Galaxy board and place it by their Mission cards. All Mission markers remain on their Mission cards. They are no longer in danger of the Fuel Gauge reaching 1, but they can't play again until the next round.

Players who Refuel may flip over completed Mission cards and return all Mission markers from those cards to the pool. Mission cards must be flipped over in alphabetical order: A, B, C, D, and E. Players can flip over a completed Mission card only if all preceding Mission cards have been flipped.

Example: Vivian has collected the Space Items she needs for Missions A and C but still has 1 Item left to complete Mission B. She decides to stop and Refuel now and flip over Mission A. On the next [round,] she can try and collect what she needs for Mission B and then again to flip over B and C.

Step 2: Roll Navigation Dice

The Active Player rolls the 3 Navigation dice by tossing them into the Dice Launcher.

Step 3: Check For Fuel

For every orange Navigation die, move the Fuel Gauge down 1. If the Fuel Gauge reaches 1, all current players have pushed their luck too far and run out of fuel. They remove all Mission markers from their face-up Mission cards and return them to the pool. Completed, facedown Mission cards are unaffected. Players who previously chose to stop and Refuel are safe.

Step 4: Move Rockets

All players move their Rockets according to the Navigation dice in the Dice Launcher, following the directions 1 die at a time from the bottom of the base to the top. If a player encounters a Cosmic Event, they must stop movement and resolve the encounter. They then follow the directions on the next die.

Multiple Rockets can pass through or end up in the same square on the Galaxy board. There is more than enough room in space! Beginners may want to move Rockets 1 at at time [sic]. As players become more familiar with the game, all players can move their Rockets at the same time.

Example: First move the Fuel Gauge down 1 because there is 1 orange die. Rockets then turn, go straight, then turn again.

Icon sequence shown in the example: Turn, then Straight, then Turn.

After Step 4, return to Step 1 and keep playing.

Ending a Round

A round ends when the Fuel Gauge reaches 1 or all players decide to stop. Reset the Fuel Gauge to 6 and pass the Dice Launcher, Navigation dice, and Fuel Gauge to the player on the left to start a new round. Each player places their Rocket facing any direction on any Starport that matches their "Approved for Travel" Starport tokens.

Winning the Game

The first player to visit all 5 Starports and complete all 5 Mission cards wins the game. If 2 or more players win on the same turn, the player [closest] to the Active Player clockwise wins.

Types of Movement

The direction the icon is facing in the Dice Launcher is not important. A Rocket always moves in the direction it is facing on the Galaxy board.

Straight: Move Rocket 2 squares in the direction the Rocket is facing.

Turn: Move Rocket 1 square in the direction the Rocket is facing, then turn right OR left (player's choice) and move 1 more square.

Cosmic Events

Players may encounter different Cosmic Events as they rocket through space. Some will help players complete missions and others will send them careening through space. When a player hits a Cosmic Event, they must end movement for that die immediately, resolve the event, and then continue with the movement on the next die. Unless stated otherwise, players leave their Rocket in the direction it was going.

Cosmic Events include Encounter tokens and Galaxy Events.

Encounter Tokens

When a player runs into a facedown token, they flip it face-up and either add the Item to their Mission card or Return to a Starport. That Encounter token remains available for other players to pass through and use.

Types of Encounter tokens:

  • Space Items: When a player's Rocket enters a space with a Space Item token, they place a Mission marker on a matching image on any of their Mission cards or on any space showing the Any Item icon (a ? symbol).
    • Hint: It is usually best to cover Space Item images from left-to-right, completing Mission cards in alphabetical order (A first, then B, etc.).
  • Any Item: When a player's Rocket enters a space with Any Item, the player can place a Mission marker on any uncovered space on their Mission cards.
  • Return To Starport: When a player's Rocket enters a space with Return to Starport, the player immediately places their Rocket on any Starport that matches 1 of their "Approved For Travel" Starport tokens facing any direction they want.

Galaxy Events

Galaxy Events are printed on the board.

  • Wormholes: When a Rocket enters a Wormhole, stop that die movement immediately and transport the Rocket through the space tunnel to the matching Wormhole on the board, facing any direction. Continue with the next Navigation die in the Dice Launcher.
  • Starports: When a Rocket enters a Starport space, the player flips their matching Starport token to show "Approved for Travel." The player can now move here if they encounter a Return to Starport token or when starting a new round.
  • Wrapping Around: When a Rocket runs into the edge of the board, stop that die movement immediately and place the Rocket on the other side of the board in the same row or column facing the center of the board. Continue with the next Navigation die in the Dice Launcher.

Alternate Rules

These games allow players to play faster games or play with young children.

[Heading cut off at scan edge; visible text "…y Missions"]

[In this] game, players only complete Missions and do not visit Starports. [Set up] the game as usual, but do not pass out Starport tokens. To make the game even faster, play with only 3 or 4 Missions. The first player to complete their Missions wins.

[Unknown] Space

[During] Setup, place the Encounter tokens randomly faceup on the board. [They] are revealed at the beginning of the game.

Assembly

The back page of the booklet shows assembly diagrams for three pieces. The diagrams carry no printed text beyond these headings, and each one ends in a "COMPLETE" picture of the assembled piece.

  • Starport Assembly: Diagram of the Starport pieces being joined, with the complete Starport shown.
  • Fuel Gauge Assembly: Diagram of the Fuel Gauge and its clip, with the complete Fuel Gauge shown.
  • Space Mountain Dice Launcher Assembly: Diagram of the launcher pieces being joined, with the complete Dice Launcher shown.

Note: You will need to disassemble the Starports, Fuel Gauge, and the Space Mountain Dice Launcher in order to put them back in the box.
