How to Win

Dim Sum Jam is a cooperative game. Players belong to the serving crew and their mission is to handle the orders from customers until they complete the LAST VIP order in the order deck and wins. If the crew receives THREE complaint tokens or the order card deck runs empty before the LAST VIP order is completed, they lose the game.

Standard Game Set-up

  1. Place the table cards in the middle of table in ascending order, accessible to all players.
  2. Place the reception card next to Table cards.
  3. Place the 3 complaint tokens and 2 exotic tea tokens next to the reception card as a supply.
  4. Shuffle all regular order cards, randomly draw 5 cards and stack them face down.
  5. Shuffle the VIP order cards and randomly draw 1 card. Place it face down on top of those 5 face down regular order cards. Return all remaining VIP order cards into the game box, they will not be used anymore.
  6. Randomly draw 10 more Regular Order cards and stack them face down on top of the prepared stack. Return all remaining regular order cards into the game box. They will not be used anymore.
  7. An Order deck with 16 Order cards is formed (10 Regular / 1 VIP / 5 Regular).
  8. One after one, draw the top card on the order deck, place it face up on an empty Table card until all 7 Table cards are filled.
  9. Decide a start player randomly.
  10. Shuffle all Dim Sum tokens and randomly deal 5 to every player's hand. Dim Sum tokens owned by players always remain face-up and visible to everyone. Put the remaining Dim Sum tokens in the bag to form a supply.
  11. When everyone is ready, flip the hourglass immediately and the game begins!

Game Play

Players take turns in clockwise order. The player who is taking his or her turn is referred as the "active player". During each turn, the active player MUST:

  1. Play a Dim Sum token, observing following requirements:

    • The number of Table card you play your Dim Sum token must match that of the token the last player plays in his/her last turn.

Example: Player A plays a shrimp dumpling token with #2 in his/her turn, so Player B must play a Dim Sum token on Table #2.

Exception: Start player can play a Dim Sum token on ANY Table in his first round.

    • A Dim Sum token must be played at an empty space on an Order card.
    • The Dim Sum token must match the icon on that empty space.
  2. After playing a Dim Sum token, draw a new one from bag.

Remark: Whenever the bag is empty, reshuffle all Dim Sum tokens in the discard pile into the bag.

  3. Current turn ends and next player's turn begins.

Players continue to play Dim Sum tokens until any of below happens:

I. An order card is fulfilled: An order is fulfilled when ALL dim sum icons are occupied. Discard those tokens on that card into discard pile. Draw another order card from the order card deck and place on top of the just completed one. Players discuss together and MUST choose either to:

  1. Flip over the hourglass, or
  2. Gain 1 Exotic tea token and place it on the reception card. If Exotic tea token runs out in the supply, player cannot gain it.

II. Time runs out: When time ran out, players receive a complaint token. Place it on the reception card. At this moment, the game is paused. One or more players may choose to discard and replenish any or all of their Dim Sum tokens from their hand up to 5. Once done, flip the hourglass and resume the game.

III. When a player cannot play any Dim Sum token: When the active player cannot play a Dim Sum token on a legal space, game time is halted momentarily (lay down the hourglass on the table). He or she MAY choose to discard any or all of their Dim Sum tokens from hand and replenish up to 5. Players receive a complaint token. Place it on the reception card. After the above are all completed, the active player stands the hourglass upright again on either side as he or she wishes. The game then resumes and the active player may play Dim Sum token on any table (as if they were the first player in the game). In a rare case if the active player still cannot play any Dim Sum token, they could discard any or all of their sim sum tokens and replenish up to 5, but WITHOUT receiving another complaint token per the above case.

The Exotic Tea tokens

Whenever an Exotic Tea token is available on the reception card, players may use it as a "wild" Dim Sum token which could be placed on any icon (subject to placement rule). The next active player MUST play a Dim Sum token on table #1. When an order card is fulfilled, return all exotic tea token on it to the supply. It is available for players to gain when an order is fulfilled (including this).

Ending of the Game

The game ends whenever one or more of the following conditions apply:

a) The last VIP order used in this game is fulfilled — Congratulations! You win!

b) The Order Deck is empty and you need to replenish the table — AND there is an unfulfilled VIP order on the table cards — The VIP is not amused. You lose!

c) Received 3 Complaint tokens — Your bad service is spread on all social media. You lose!

Changing Turn Order Variant

(Transcribed as printed under this heading: the printed text repeats the end-of-game conditions and does not state a turn-order change.)

b) The Order Deck is empty and you need to replenish the table — AND there is an unfulfilled VIP order on the table cards — The VIP is not amused. You lose!

Experienced players may play the game under specific mission. We recommend you to challenge one mission only in each game. Some missions change the game set-up. After winning a game with a specific mission, you will be awarded an "achievement sticker" to boast of your success in managing the restaurant. Apply the sticker on box top.
