Game Overview

Deckscape is an "Escape Room" game in pocket format. It can be played with a group of friends or even alone. The idea for the game is based on real escape rooms: a group of people is "locked in" a room and must try to escape within a time limit. To do so, they must solve puzzles, make smart use of the items they find, and advance the story. No prior knowledge is needed to solve the puzzles: anyone can do it.

Preparing the Demo

To play this demo, you must first cut out the cards. Fold the sheet open and lay it with the card fronts facing up. The fronts show the numbers 1 to 10 in the upper left corner of each card; look only at that corner. Cut out the cards carefully along the markings and try not to look at or read the cards more closely than you need to. It is best if someone who is not playing cuts out the cards.

Then sort the cards by their numbers 1 to 10 and form a deck with card number 1 on top, front facing up.

ATTENTION: Do not look at the cards on this sheet yet! Do not look through the deck and do not shuffle it. The cards are numbered from 1 to 10 in the upper left corner.

Now you can start: read the front of card number 1 and follow the instructions. Have fun!

Before You Begin

Before you start, get paper, a pen and a clock to read the time. When you have everything, turn card number 1 over.

Setting Up the Exhibition

On the back of card 1, take the next two cards and lay them side by side without turning them over. Together they form the art exhibition you are in.

Then take the next three yellow cards, the three blue cards and the red card, and without turning them over, split them into three stacks. Always follow the text of the top card of each stack.

Only move on to the next card when you are told to, or when you have solved the puzzle on top of the stack.

Solving a Puzzle

To solve a puzzle:

  1. Read the task carefully.
  2. Find a common solution together.
  3. Turn the card over and check your solution.

You can solve the puzzles on top of the card stacks at the same time, or you can all concentrate on a single puzzle. Remember that you win or lose all together.

If your answer is wrong, mark an × on the score-sheet and proceed to the next card, unless the card tells you otherwise. Each time you make a mistake, mark an × on the red line of the score-sheet.

Some cards tell you that if you do not yet have a certain item, you must mark a second × and turn the card over. If you already have it, proceed to the next card.

Items you find (cards you are told to keep, such as the book, the audio guide or the tablet) should be kept, as they may be useful later.

Score-sheet

The score-sheet is printed on the back of card 1. Read the current time from your clock and write it into the field marked "hours : minutes" to start the game. Then begin playing.

Each time you make a mistake, mark an × on the red line of the score-sheet.

Resetting the Game

If you want to reset the game, sort the cards from 1 to 10 again.

End of the Game and Scoring

When you reach the card that says "Finally free!", the escape is complete. Now work out how many minutes it took you to finish the game, and add 2 minutes for each × marked on the score-sheet.

Depending on your total time, your result is:

  • 0-10 minutes: You are true escape artists!
  • 11-20 minutes: Well done!
  • 21 minutes or more: You can do better!
