Object of the Game
The aim of "Das Duell um die Geld" is to estimate the answer correctly or, even better, to know it, and by hard-nosed bluffing to snatch all the chips from your opponents and thereby win the game.
Someone whose constant companion is complete cluelessness can also win this game.
Setup
Each player receives a pen and a Magic Board. In addition, each player receives the same number of chips of the same values:
- 4 blue 200€
- 5 yellow 500€
- 4 green 800€
- 5 white 2,500€
- 6 red 6,000€
The value of all chips per player together is 10,000€.
Game Flow
Before Every Round
The oldest player at the table receives the Dealer button at the start and thereby becomes the game master (Spielleiter) of the first question. After every question the Dealer button moves clockwise to the next player, and that player becomes the game master of the next question.
The player to the left of the current game master (the one with the Dealer button) receives the Small Blind button; he must place the so-called Small Blind, a small forced bet (see table). To the left of the player with the Small Blind sits the player who must place the so-called Big Blind (see table); he receives the Big Blind button.
The two Blind buttons likewise move one player to the left after every question.
After every round, in which every player has been game master once, the blinds (forced bets) that the players with the Blind buttons must place at the start of a game increase, see the table of bets.
From round 6 on, the Small Blind always increases by 50€. The value of the Big Blind is always twice that of the Small Blind.
The new round always begins with the oldest player. If the oldest player has already been eliminated, the new round begins with the player sitting to his left who is still in the game.
Each game master is responsible for the correct course of play. He watches over compliance with the rules, manages the chips that have been bet, acts as referee, and reads the question, the hints and the correct answer aloud, loudly and clearly.
Each question is played with a total of four betting rounds.
Betting Round 1
The players with the blinds place their first bets without knowing the question. The player with the Small Blind button places the small forced bet, the player with the Big Blind button the big one.
The current game master asks the question.
All players except the game master write their answer on their Magic Boards. Make sure that only you know your answer and that the other players, and also the game master, cannot look at your "cards".
Each player now considers how he rates his chances of winning this question. Either he knows the answer, great. Or he has only a rough idea, also fine. With the complete cluelessness mentioned above, the only options are to drop out or to bluff.
Now bets are placed. The players with the blinds have already bet. Next in turn is the player sitting to the left of the player with the Big Blind button. Each player now has the following three options:
- He drops out of the game and "folds".
- He bets exactly as many euros as the player with the Big Blind and holds the bet, he "calls".
- He raises, he bets more euros than the Big Blind, he "raises".
In clockwise order all players decide on one of these three options. As soon as a player raises, i.e. increases the bet, the player to his left decides which of the three options above is now possible for him.
This continues clockwise until all players still in the game have bet the same number of euros.
All chips that have been bet are managed by the game master until a winner of the question is determined.
Betting Round 2
The game master reads the first hint aloud.
Each player still in the game should now be able to better judge where he stands with his given answer.
Now bets are placed again. Since there are no forced bets in this round, the player to the left of the game master, the player with the Small Blind button, begins.
Each player now has the following three options:
- He drops out of the game and "folds".
- He passes, i.e. he bets nothing but stays in the game, he "checks".
- He bets at least the Big Blind of the 1st betting round, he makes a "Bet".
In clockwise order all players decide on one of these three options.
If all players "check", the game master reads the next hint without any bet having been made.
But if a player makes a "Bet", each player again has three options:
- He drops out of the game and "folds".
- He bets exactly as many euros as the player with the Bet and holds the bet, he "calls".
- He raises, he bets more euros than the Bet, but at least the Big Blind of the first round, he "raises".
When all players remaining in the game have bet the same number of euros, the game master reads the second hint aloud.
Betting Round 3
The game master reads the second hint to the correct answer aloud.
Each player still in the game should now be able to judge even better where he stands with his given answer.
Betting round 3 proceeds exactly like betting round 2.
The Finale
The game master reads the correct answer aloud.
Now every player knows exactly how it stands with his answer.
Afterwards, bets are placed exactly as in betting rounds 2 and 3.
When all players remaining in the game have now bet the same number of chips, these players reveal their given answers in the showdown.
In the finale, the player who made the last Bet must show his answer first; the other players follow clockwise.
In general: players who have folded may, but do not have to, show their answer.
The player who gave the correct answer, or whose answer comes closest to the correct answer, wins all chips bet on this question, which are handed to him by the game master.
It does not matter whether the correct answer was undershot or overshot; only the respective distance counts.
Now the Dealer, Small Blind and Big Blind buttons are passed on to the left from each player.
The new game master takes over the lead, the first players with the Blind buttons make the forced bets, and the next question can be asked.
What Happens If...
... only two players are left in the game? In that case one of the players who has already been eliminated takes over the function of game master. The rules of the betting rounds remain unchanged.
... several players gave the correct answer or the distance to the correct result is the same? This situation is called a "Split Pot". All chips / euros that have been bet are divided equally among the respective players. If under some circumstances this is not possible, the remaining chips stay in the pot for the next question.
... a player wants to go "all in" and bet all his chips? Each player still in the game can, as soon as it is his turn, bet all his chips at any time.
... a player bets all his chips, but several opposing players want to bet above this amount? In this case the game master opens a "Side Pot" in which the chips lie that are in the game up to that moment.
The "All in" player can no longer intervene in the game, but must not yet reveal his answer.
The additional chips are played out between the players who bet more. If the "All in" player wins, he receives only the chips that are in the "Side Pot". The additional chips in the pot are won by the player who, of the players who bet more, was able to answer the question best.
Depending on the game situation there can also be several Side Pots. Each pot is then distributed by the game master, one after the other, among the participating players to the winner. The "Split Pot" rule still applies.
In general, all questions correspond to the state as of the beginning of May 2016.
Always remember: it is only a game.
