The publisher said only a single specimen can be copied, and the rulebook's singular wording agrees; only the French edition differs.

Just one. Place one Research token on your board matching a Specimen token on an island where you have an Explorer. The Specimen can be anywhere on that island, even ahead of your Explorer. The French rulebook says "all", which is a translation error; the English and German wording is singular.
