Do I have to go on an adventure when I cross an adventure token, and what if I cannot pay?
The publisher confirmed that the wording means you must go on the adventure; the unpayable case comes from the expansion rules note quoted by players.

Yes. Crossing a golden ribbon with an adventure token obliges you to draw the card and resolve one of its two options, paying its cost and taking its rewards. You cannot decline it. If you cannot pay either option, you discard the adventure with no reward; if only one option is payable you must take it.
