Game Idea
During the game, players will use the dice with the result of "1" as pupils to complete different Darumas, at the end of the game the player with the most points will be the winner.
Components
1.- 60 Daruma cards 2.- 8 Dice 3.- A Tanuki card 4.- 12 Round Tiles 5.- A round token 6.- 5 Daruma Eye Counters 7.- 6 Objective Cards 8.- 1 Reference Card
Setting Up the Game
1.- Place the Tanuki card in the center of the table and randomly place the Round Tiles creating the Round Track. Place 6/7/8/9 tiles for 2/3/4/5 players respectively. 2.- Place the Round Counter on the first Round Tiles and the Reference card in full view of all players. 3.- Shuffle the Daruma cards and place five of them face up around the Tanuki card, leaving the rest of them in a deck pile face down next to the cards. 4.- Leave the 8 white dice and the Daruma Eye Counters within reach of all players. 5.- Deal an objective to each player, who will keep it secret from the rest of the players. 6.- The last player to visit Japan will be the starting player and will start the game. In case no one has traveled to Japan, determine the first player randomly.
How to Play?
Starting with the first player, the players take turns in consecutive clockwise order.
The Turn
At the start of the turn, if three out of five Darumas around the Tanuki card have the same color or the same action, the player may choose to pick up all the Darumas (including the Eye Counters), shuffle them together with the Daruma deck and draw another five Darumas to place around the Tanuki card.
On their turn, the player rolls the 8 dice, and each result with a "4" is placed on the account book inside the Tanuki (left side). These dice will be lost for the rest of the player's turn. Repeat this step each time another result of "4" subsequently appears on a roll. The remaining dice will be used, one by one, to perform the actions on their turn.
If the result is a "1", the player must use this die to place a pupil on a Daruma. If there is no other pupil token or die in it, place the die in one of the two eyes of a Daruma of the player's choice and then perform the corresponding Daruma action. (Actions are explained below in the Special Actions section).
If the result is other than a "1", the player may place that die on the sake bottle inside the Tanuki card (right side) and then re-roll as many dice as they choose from their available dice. If any result is a "4", they must place it on the account book on the Tanuki card.
The following special rules only apply during the player's turn:
Bad Luck
If at any time during the turn, a fourth die is placed on the account book inside the Tanuki card, the turn is over with no results for the player. Remove all the dice used as pupils and the dice on the Tanuki card, and pass your turn to the next player who will start their turn with the 8 dice available. In this case, do not advance the round counter.
Good Luck
If four or more dice with a result of "4" are rolled in a single roll, the player has reversed their bad luck. The player takes a Daruma from the deck and places it face up in their playing area to count the points at the end of the game. The player then resumes their turn by rolling the dice they have rolled again.
Japanese Generosity
Once per turn and during their turn, a player may give a Daruma from their pool to another player to take a die with a result of "4" from the Tanuki account book and roll it again. If your result is other than "4", add it to your pool of available dice, otherwise, return it to the Tanuki's account book.
End of Turn
If the player has no more dice available, they end their turn. Similarly, a player can stop whenever they want, even if they have some dice available. In either case, the player picks up all the Darumas with two pupils and places them face up to their player zone to count the points at the end of the game.
A player cannot pass if they still have any dice with a result of "1", they must use them and perform the corresponding Daruma action.
Darumas with no pupils or only one pupil stay around the Tanuki card. Remove the dice from uncompleted Darumas (only one eye) and place a Daruma Eye Counter on its place. This counter will remain until another player completes the Daruma or shuffle the cards (see The Turn).
Draw Darumas from the deck until there are 5 face up Darumas around the Tanuki card again. The next player will start their turn with the 8 dice available.
Advance the Round counter (0)/(1)/(2) spaces if the player stopped with still (0)/(1)/(2 or more dice) respectively in their playing area.
The Round Track
When the Round Counter reaches the last round tile of the Round Track, it will continue counting the rounds backward (from right to left). The game will end when the Round Counter reaches its starting position.
The round track has some special tiles:
- Daruma Tile: When a player causes the counter to advance to one of these boxes, they pick up a face-down Daruma from the top of the Daruma deck and carry it face up to their player zone to count the points at the end of the game.
- Four Dice Tile: If a player starts their turn with the round counter in any of these tiles, it means they already have a "4" on the account book inside the Tanuki and this is taken into account for the "bad luck" rule. Only for this rule.
Game Length
When the Round counter reaches the first tile of the Round Track again it triggers the end of the game. The Round continues until, in the game, all players have played the same number of turns. At that moment, start the Scoring Phase.
In the unlikely event that the Darumas deck is exhausted, the game ends immediately when the Darumas cannot be replenished around the Tanuki card. At that moment, start the Scoring Phase.
Objectives and the Golden Daruma
The objective card shows each player the different points they get for each of their Daruma types at the end of the game. 2 points for each Daruma of the colors indicated at the top of the objective card, and -3 points for each Daruma of the color indicated at the bottom of the objective card. The rest of the Darumas award 1 point to the player.
The Golden Daruma is special and functions as a wild color card awarding 2 points in the final scoring phase.
Scoring Phase and End of the Game
At the end of the game, each player score according to the objective card received at the start of the game. The player with the highest score wins. In case of a tie, the player with the least Darumas in their playing area wins. If the tie persists, both players set a future goal, and the first player to fulfill it is the winner.
Special Actions
All actions are mandatory and must be fully executed whenever possible. A player can place a pupil on a Daruma even if they cannot perform that action. Only in this case, the action will have no effect.
- [Re-roll icon]: Re-roll all your available dice. After rolling the dice, place the dice with a result of "4" on the account book inside the Tanuki card.
- [Re-roll, same result icon]: Re-roll all your available dice with the same result, always more than one die. After rolling the dice, place the dice with a result of "4" on the account book inside the Tanuki card. Example: In a roll of 2/2/5/1/3/3/3 you must re-roll the two dice with the result of "2" or the two dice with the result of "3."
- [Re-roll, non-repeating result icon]: Re-roll all your available dice with a single, non-repeating result. After rolling the dice, place the dice with a result of "4" on the account book inside the Tanuki card. Example: In a roll of 2/2/5/1/3/3/3 you must re-roll the dice with the result of "5" and "1."
- [+1/-1, same result icon]: Change the result of all your available dice with the same result, always more than one die. Apply a +1 or -1 of your choice to each die individually. You cannot modify to a result of "4." Remember that the opposite sides of a die add up to 7; this will make it easier for you to find a result. With this action, you are allowed to go from a 6 to a 1 or vice versa.
- [+1/-1, non-repeating result icon]: Change the result of all your available dice with a single, non-repeating result. Apply a +1 or -1 of your choice to each die individually. You cannot modify to a result of "4." Remember that the opposite sides of a die add up to 7; this will make it easier for you to find a result. With this action, you are allowed to go from a 6 to a 1 or vice versa.
- [Dice-in-eyes icon]: For each die that you place, in your turn, in one of the spaces in the eyes of this Daruma, it will be interpreted that you have a "4" on the account book inside the Tanuki card and this will be taken into account for the "bad luck" rule. Only for this rule. The pupils of previous turns on Darumas with this effect are not taken into account.
- [Exchange icon]: This action can only be done when the Daruma has its two pupils. Choose two players and one Daruma from each of them, these players exchange these Darumas. You can choose yourself or another player who does not have any completed Darumas. In this case, only this player will receive a Daruma. This action is not undone even if your turn is subsequently affected by the "bad luck" rule.
- [Sake bottle icon]: This icon appears on the Tanuki's sake bottle. Roll again, as many dice available as you choose, one or more dice. After rolling the dice, place the dice with a result of "4" on the account book inside the Tanuki card.
Example of a Turn
1.- Naoko del Carmen rolls 8 dice. The two results of "4" are placed on the account book inside the Tanuki. She then uses one of the "1's" to "paint" a pupil on a Daruma which allows her to re-roll the 5 available dice from her pool (including the other "1"). 2.- In her next roll, she gets a "4" again, which she puts back on the Tanuki. As she has no "1", she places a die in the Tanuki's sake bottle to re-roll the dice she wants (she chooses all of them). 3.- Now, with the new "1" she paints the pupil of another Daruma that allows the player to modify in +/-1 the result of the dice with the same result, so she has two new "1." 4.- Naoko decides to paint the two pupils of a Daruma and forces two players to exchange a Daruma between them. As she has no more dice, her turn ends and the Round counter does not advance in the track.
Naoko takes only one Daruma that she has completed and leaves two Darumas with an eye counter. Naoko is the best!
