Object of the Game
Each player tries to get his own boules as close as possible to the small target boule (also called "jack"). The first player to get 13 points wins the set; if you win 2 sets, you win the match. In the rare case of a tie, which is only possible in combination with "combos," players keep playing until there is a clear winner.
Crossboule can be played by everybody against everybody, or in teams of 2 or 3 players. The team game is explained at the end of these instructions.
Everybody Against Everybody
Each player gets three boules of a particular design. First, mark the starting area. Then the youngest player throws the jack and each player throws his first boule. If the jack can't be seen from the starting area, the players may not check the position of the target boule before making their first throw. The player who is the furthest away from the jack throws the next boule. The distance between the boules is determined from the edge of one boule to the edge of the other. When all players have thrown their three boules, everybody counts his points (see Scoring and Combos) and keeps them in mind (or, if need be, writes them down).
The player with the least number of points may throw the jack for the new round and mark a new starting area. If there are several players with the same number of low points, the youngest throws the jack.
Important! The player who throws the jack may — if he wants — set additional modifications as to how the boules in this round have to be thrown: e.g., "Everybody throws with his left hand" or "Only boules bouncing off a wall are scored" or "In this round, all boules must be rolled to the jack" (as in bowling).
K.O. Throws
If a player throws a boule (a) towards an opposing boule (d) in such a way that it stays on top of it, the covered boule (d) is K.O. and excluded from the scoring as long as boule (a) stays lying on top. If in the course of the round, boule (a) is thrown off, boule (d) is back in play again.
Scoring
The player who is closest to the jack with at least one boule gets 1 point for each boule that is lying closer to the jack than the closest opposing boule. If several players have thrown their boules the same distance from the jack, each of these players receives points.
Combos
Combos are specific groupings / formations that you can build with the boules in contact with the jack and for which you get extra points. The combos are:
The Contact (2 points) You get 2 points if one of your boules is in contact with the jack.
The Worm (3 points) In order to get points for a worm, one of your boules (a) has to touch the jack and a second of your boules (b) must touch your boule (a).
The Snake (5 points) A worm turns into a snake if the third one of your boules (c) touches boule (b).
The Pyramid (5 points) In order to receive points for a pyramid, one of your boules (a) has to touch the jack and your boule (b) and boule (c) must both touch boule (a).
The Flower (5 points) If all of your boules touch the jack, you get 5 points for this "flower."
King of the Hill (5 points) The player who positions his boule (a) directly on top of the jack is "King of the Hill" and earns 5 points.
Special Conditions
- In contrast to the classic Boules, you are allowed to use any throwing technique in Crossboule C3.
- The players are free to determine the entire three-dimensional playing area as they wish.
- The target boule (jack) may be thrown as far as you want.
The Team Game
For playing Crossboule in teams, you need more Crossboule sets. A team can use boules with the same design.
The players divide into teams of two or three players each. Each player gets 3 boules (with teams of three, 2 boules) of the same design. The players on a team decide on their own who will throw the boule at what time when it's their team's turn. Other than that, follow the rules as described above.
