Components

1 game board 4 crocodiles (with magnetic jaws) 4 monkeys as game pieces (white, yellow, orange and purple) 1 red flexible monkey (magnetic) 1 ordinary die

Introduction

Delicious fruits await you and the other monkeys out in the swamp, but to get there you must hop over slippery stones and treacherous logs, and past the hungry crocodiles! If you are unlucky, a pair of jaws may snap shut just as your monkey...

The first to reach the fruits has won.

Setup

  1. Place the game board on the table.
  2. Shuffle the crocodiles and place them on the marked spaces.
  3. Each player chooses a monkey piece (not the red one!) and places it on the start circle in the same colour (see figure 1).
  4. The red flexible monkey is placed on the flower, on the island with the fruits (see figure 2).
  5. The player who can make the funniest monkey face starts. Turn order is clockwise.

Playing the Game

  1. The principle of the game is this: on your turn, roll the die and move your monkey that many steps. You move along the loop of stones, logs, crocodile heads and crocodiles. The loop measures a total of 49 steps up to and including the island with the fruits. A six does not give an extra throw.

  2. IF YOU LAND ON A STONE, nothing happens, and it is the next player's turn.

  3. IF YOU LAND ON A LOG, you MUST swap places with another monkey of your choice. The only exception is that you cannot swap places with a monkey that is in a crocodile's mouth.

  4. HOW TO MOVE PAST A CROCODILE: When you reach the crocodile, move to the circle on top of the jaw, then to the circle on the neck, and so on, step by step along the back, as far as the die allows (see figure 3).

  5. IF YOU LAND ON THE CIRCLE ON TOP OF A CROCODILE JAW, you must immediately place your monkey in the crocodile's mouth. Then take the mischievous red monkey and place it on the crocodile's neck, with either its head or its feet pointing down (your choice).

5a) IF THE JAWS CLOSE, leave the red monkey standing on the crocodile's neck, while your own monkey remains inside the mouth. Then it is the next player's turn.

5b) IF THE JAWS REMAIN OPEN, put the red monkey back on its flower, while your own monkey remains in the mouth. Then it is the next player's turn.

  6. HOW YOU CAN GET OUT OF A CLOSED CROCODILE MOUTH: When it is your turn, roll the die. If the result is even, nothing happens and your monkey must stay. If the result is odd, you must immediately put the red monkey back on its flower, and then move your own monkey backwards the same number of steps along the loop. Note that you do not need to worry about whether you land on a stone or a crocodile head; your turn ends as soon as you have moved.

  7. IF YOUR MONKEY IS IN AN OPEN CROCODILE MOUTH when it is your turn, roll the die and move according to figure 4.

  8. IF YOU LAND ON A DRAWN CROCODILE HEAD, you have three options to choose from:

Who Wins?

The player whose monkey first reaches the island with the fruits has won. You do not need to roll an even number to reach the goal.

8a) Move any other monkey of your choice forward into the nearest crocodile mouth (you may only do so if it is open and "free"). Then you try yourself with the mischievous red monkey, and rules 5a and 5b apply.

8b) If another monkey is already lying in an open crocodile mouth, you may take the red monkey and place it on the crocodile's neck. Rules 5a and 5b apply!

8c) You may take two crocodiles (any two, but there must be no monkeys on or in them), shuffle them behind your back, and then put them back in whatever arrangement you wish. It is an advantage for you if you keep track yourself of which crocodile is which...

  • THREE IMPORTANT RULES:

9a) If another monkey is lying in an open crocodile mouth, and you yourself move forward and land on the circle on the crocodile jaw so that it closes, the other monkey is trapped, and rule 6 does NOT apply in that case. Your fellow player may not roll again until you yourself have moved on and the jaw has opened.

9b) Two monkeys may not stand on the same space. If your throw would make you land on the same space as another monkey, you place yourself in front of it, on the nearest free space. The same applies if you move backwards out of a crocodile mouth: you go to the nearest free space backwards, if another monkey would be standing where you land.

9c) The mischievous red monkey may be moved from one crocodile to another. If the red monkey is holding a monkey locked in, and you (under 8a or 8b) want to move the red monkey to another crocodile, you may do so. But as soon as the red monkey has been tried on a crocodile's neck and the jaws did not close, the red monkey must be put back on its flower!
