Overview

Coupell is a 2-player, co-operative word game played with a shared deck of letter cards. It takes 20-30 minutes.

Setup

Each player shuffles the deck and deals 4 cards to their partner, face-up.

Cards may not be rearranged except as part of an action. Speaking outside of your turn is also forbidden.

Taking a Turn

Each turn, you:

  • Draw 2 cards, placing them at the end of your hand of cards.
  • May now speak (your partner may not).
  • Perform ONE of these actions:
    • Claim a word of any length from your own hand, placing it in a personal score pile.
    • Give a card from your hand, placing it anywhere in your partner's hand of cards.
    • Move one of your partner's cards, placing it anywhere in your partner's hand.
    • You can also pass.

Claiming a Word

To claim a word, the word must use one letter from each card in an uninterrupted sequence, reading left to right, within your own hand.

Losing the Game

If, at the end of your turn, you have more than 7 cards in your hand, you both lose the game immediately.

End of the Game

Players alternate taking turns until the final 2 cards are drawn. Then that turn is completed and the game ends.

Winning the Game

To win, you must both have an identical number of cards in your score pile, and you must both have fewer than 4 cards in your hand.
