Flare Rules
- If you get a Flare in your hand which is different from your power, it is a Wild Flare and you may use it as described on the Flare under "Wild".
- If you get a Flare in your hand which is the same as your power, it is a Super Flare and you may use it as described on the Flare under "Super".
- Use of Flares is always optional (and if their meaning is clear they can be played even by a Silenced player). To use a Flare, simply show it to the other players and go ahead and do what it says. Once players have had a chance to read it, return it to your hand.
- Flares are always considered part of the hand they're in. You lose them when you run out of Challenge cards and must draw a new hand (discard them along with your Edicts), or to other players in consolation, as part of deals, etc.
- When there is conflict of timing in use of Flares with certain powers, Edicts, or other Flares, other players (starting to the left of the offensive player and proceeding to his left) may go first, then the offensive player, and finally the defensive player.
- The "main players" are the offensive player and the defensive player.
- While you have lost the use of your power (even temporarily) your Super Flare is a Wild Flare.
How to Use Expansion Set #4
How to use Expansion Set #4:
This Flare deck is not meant to be used all in one game of Cosmic Encounter (Cosmos forbid!).
At the start of a game the Flare deck is shuffled and each player is dealt one Flare. That is his identity and he gets that Alien Power Card. Then those Flares and an equal number of others are shuffled into the regular deck (thus in a 4-player game there will be 8 Flares in the deck).
The game is now begun normally.
(Three blank cards have been included for players who want to make up their own Edicts, Flares, etc. To use, just write on them in permanent felt-tip pen.)
