Components

  • 42 tiles (plus 2 spare tiles)
  • 1 rules sheet

Setup

The tiles are shuffled and placed face down on the table as a stack.

For the starting position, turn over the top 2 tiles and place them in the middle of the table. Both tiles are placed next to each other so that they score the highest possible number of points. These points are not credited to any player.

Determine a starting player and put a sheet of paper and a pencil ready.

Goal

The goal is to score the most points overall by placing your own tiles so that long colour chains are formed.

Playing the Game

The players take turns clockwise. The player whose turn it is takes the top tile from the stack and turns it face up. They must place it against any side of the tiles already lying on the table. The player should place the tile so that it scores the most points.

Important! The tiles may not overlap, and each must touch at least one colour square of another tile (see illustration).

Scoring

After each player's turn, all squares of the same colour that were increased in number by the newly placed tile are counted again. Each square is worth one point. The points are added immediately and credited to the player who placed the tile.

Note! It is better to form 2 rows of 8 squares each (= 16 points) than 3 rows of 4 squares each (= 12 points).

Remember! No two Continuo tiles are alike!

Example of scoring (shown in the illustration): Tiles 1 and 2 form the starting position and would be worth 14 points (6 points for the green colour chain, 4 points for the blue chain, and another 4 points for the second blue colour chain). These points, however, count for none of the players. Tile 3 is worth 10 points: 6 points for the blue chain and 4 points for the red chain. Tile 4 is worth 18 points: 7 points twice for the two blue colour chains and 4 points for the green colour chain. The first 4 tiles are correctly placed.

End of the Game

The game ends after the last tile has been placed. The points are added up, and the player with the most points wins.

Two-Player Variant

Translated from the French block of the same leaflet ("CONTINUO pour 2 joueurs").

Draw the first 2 tiles from the stack. Place the two tiles in the middle of the playing area, and continue in this way until one of the players obtains the highest score. The first two tiles do not count. Play by following the instructions and refer to the example. Scores are counted individually. The players must agree on the score before writing it down.

Transcriber's note: the French source's stopping condition ("jusqu'à ce que l'un des joueurs obtienne le score le plus élevé", literally "until one of the players obtains the highest score") is printed as written and is not clear. The text is kept as printed and the stopping condition is not resolved here.
