Goal

Be the first to correctly guess the shape, number, and color of your secret card.

Setup

Shuffle the deck of clue cards and deal each player five cards. Players are then dealt a sixth card, their secret card. Without looking at their secret card, players will place the card in their hand backwards. You're ready to play!

A player's hand ready for play: five cards face the player and the secret card (far left) faces outward.

Starting clue

Before play begins, each player gives their left-hand opponent a clue card from their hand. The card should have something in common with their opponent's secret card.

If an opponent is unable to give a card that matches, the opponent instead gives them a card that has nothing in common with their card. The opponent must tell the player that there is nothing in common with their secret card. The card given to the player is left face-up on the table in front of the player. The card does not go into the player's hand. Everyone draws a card to replace the one they gave. You should now have six cards in hand.

How to play

Players begin their turn by revealing a card from their hand. The opponent to the player's left then indicates whether the card has something in common with the player's secret card by saying, "Yes" or "No."

Cards have 3 attributes or elements:

  • Number
  • Shape (symbol)
  • Color

(The card diagram shows the number in the top corner, the shape beneath it, a large central circle, the color, and a small color identifier letter in the corner.)

Is it yes or no?

  • If it's a "Yes," the active player places the card beside the hint card given to them at the beginning of the game.
  • If it's a "No," the active player places the card in a separate pile (players can organize their "Yes" and "No" piles any way they choose).

The player then draws a card to end their turn.

Matches

Each card will either match your secret card with one attribute (e.g. shape) or not at all. This is important to remember when trying to deduce what your secret card is.

Game end

Instead of playing a card, a player may guess the shape, color, and number on their secret card. If they are incorrect, they are out of the game! They must lay their hand face-up on the table (players may look at the eliminated player's hand). If the player guesses correctly, that player wins the game!

Example: "I think my card is red, solid-circle, three!"

Exhausted draw deck / hand

If the draw deck runs out, players continue to play from their hands without drawing replacement cards. If it is a player's turn and their hand is exhausted, they must guess their secret card. If the player fails to guess their card, they are eliminated and play continues.

Optional ability cards

You can alter the rules by playing with the optional ability cards. If you decide to play with the ability cards, deal each player a random ability card during setup.

  • Double Speed: Once per game, you may play two clue cards in a row (draw two cards instead of one to end your turn).
  • Deduction: Once per game, you may pick an attribute on a card you have already played. Ask your opponent if it is the same as your secret card (e.g. "Is it a three?"). Once they've answered, end your turn. Do not draw a card.
  • Second Chance: Once per game, if you guess your secret card and are incorrect, you are not eliminated. Instead, your opponent must tell you which attributes are incorrect (e.g. "color and number"). Immediately place two of your cards beneath the deck (do not replace them) and end your turn without drawing a card. During the remainder of the game, you play with two fewer cards.
  • Number One: You go first. You are dealt six cards instead of five (you will always have one more card than your opponents).
