Components

  • 1 game board with 25 spaces
  • 25 caps
  • 5 colour strips

Setup

  • Each of the 25 spaces on the game board is covered with a cap.
  • Turn the 5 colour strips so that the triangles at the ends of all colour strips show the same colour (all grey or all white).

(The rulebook shows a correct example, where all triangles are the same colour, and an incorrect example, where they are not.)

  • Shuffle the 5 colour strips, without turning them over. Then slide one colour strip into each of the 5 slots of the game board.
  • It is best to do this below the tabletop, so that no player sees which strip was slid into which slot, not even the player who shuffles the colour strips and slides them into the slots.
  • The youngest player starts.

Turn Sequence

  • The game proceeds clockwise. On their turn, the active player must uncover three caps one after another, thereby revealing the hidden colours.
  • The caps must be uncovered individually, one after the other. After a cap has been uncovered and before the next cap is uncovered, the active player must decide whether to do one of the following with the cap they have just uncovered:
    1. Remove it from the game and return it to the box, or
    2. Move it onto another, already open space of a different colour.

(The rulebook illustrates both options: "1) ... either removed from the game and returned to the box" and "2) ... or placed onto another, already open space of a different colour.

Rules to Observe

  • Only for the starting player: in their very first turn, they must remove three caps.
  • In every turn, at least one cap must be removed from the game.
  • If a cap is moved onto another, already open space, a different colour (other than the colour just uncovered) must be covered!
  • If a player moves a cap as their last action in their turn, the following player may not uncover the same cap again with their first action.

(The rulebook shows a correct example, where the cap is moved onto a space of a different colour, and an incorrect example, where the cap is moved onto a space of the same colour that was just uncovered.)

Elimination of a Player

  • If a player uncovers a cap and, at that moment, the uncovered colour is visible for the fifth time, that player is eliminated from the game immediately. The cap just uncovered is removed from the game.
  • The next player is then up, and the remaining players continue playing.

Important: colours that have already been visible five times may be covered again by the other players in later turns. If a player then uncovers the fifth field of such a colour again, that player is also eliminated from the game.

(The rulebook shows the board with the colours that have been seen five times circled in red.)

End of the Game

  • Once only one player remains after the elimination of players, that player has won!

Variant: Points

  • Colorio can also be played for points. Several rounds are played, as many as there are players. Each player is the starting player exactly once. After each round, the players receive points, which are noted on a sheet of paper:
    • The first player to be eliminated receives 0 points.
    • The second player to be eliminated receives 1 point, and so on.
  • When all rounds have been played, the player who has collected the most points in total wins.
