Shootouts
First Player
The player who last blew something up becomes First Player and takes the Turn Order Token with the Pass Left side placed face-up on the table.
Start of Shootout
Each player places their Character Card on the table, with the BOOM side face-down to signify they are alive and in the game, as well as their matching Character Ability Card with the ability face up and ready to use. Each player antes 1 coin to the center of the table, creating the winning pot.
Each player then takes their hand of 6 cards, shuffles them face-down, then fans them out facing away from themselves and towards the other players at the table. No player should look at the front of any cards they have in their hand, and should only be able to see the card backs.
REMINDER: Never look at your own hand of cards!
Turn — Part 1
Starting with the First Player, the current player turns to the player on their left and asks which card they should play. The player on the left may lie, tell the truth, or say nothing about the card they are picking. The player on the left must choose 1 card out of the current player’s hand, then places it face-down on the table between them.
Turn — Part 2
The current player then turns to the player on their right and asks them which card they should play. The player on the right can say anything they like about the card they are picking or the card picked by the previous player. Then the player on the right must choose 1 card out of the current players hand, then places it face-down on the table between them.
The current player then places their remaining hand face-down in front of them.
Move onto the Showdown when each player has had a chance to complete their turn.
Showdown
Each player must now silently pick either the card on their left or the card on their right.
Once cards have been selected, the First Player instructs everyone to simultaneously turn over and reveal their cards by counting down:
“3... 2... 1... SHOOT!”
Resolve the revealed cards in the following manner:
Click: Pay 1 Coin To Pot
- Place 1 of your silver coins into the pot at the center of the table.
Click: 2 Coins Stolen
- If this card was on the left, give 2 of your silver coins to the player on your left. If this card was on the right, give 2 of your silver coins to the player on your right. If you only have 1 coin, you must give it up. If you have no money, no one can steal from you. Lucky you?
BOOM
- You are dead. Flip your Character Card over to reveal the BOOM side. Place the rest of your cards face-down in front of you. You are eliminated from the current Shootout and do not pass any cards to any of the other players.
All players left alive will then pass a card face-down to the next player in the direction of the Turn Order Token. They may pass the card that they chose not to reveal, or a random card from their hand. All players then take their newly acquired card and, without looking at the front of the card, shuffle it into their hand.
If a player passed a random card from their hand, they put the previously unrevealed card during the Showdown back into their hand, also without looking, and shuffle their hand again.
Pass the Turn Order Token to the next player on the left, they then become First Player. Flip the Turn Order Token to the opposite side.
Play begins again with all players still alive fanning out their cards facing away from themselves.
Continue playing Turns and Showdowns, making sure to flip the Turn Order Token each time it is passed, until all living players have 1 card left unplayed, or only 1 player is left alive.
Those who survived have won the Shootout!
Play Example
It is Sheriff Heather’s turn and she’s got her cards all fanned out away from her. On her left she has her Deputy, Brandon Bull, and on her right is Carla Coyote, notorious at the gaming tables for her unwavering stare and unerring ability to swindle the best players out of their money.
Heather turns to her left first. “What should I pick dear Deputy of mine?” She knows she could make Brandon tell her the truth, but she trusts he’ll do right by her. Especially when faced against Carla.
“You should definitely pick that one Sheriff,” Brandon points to the first card on Heather’s left, “It’s the best choice, I promise. It’ll only make you pay a coin to the pot.”
Heather nods in temporary agreement. She takes the card and places it face down on the table between them. She then turns to Carla on her right, looking her dead in the eye.
“Alright you varmint, what’s it going to be? Remember, I’m onto your tricks!”
With a sly smile and a sweet voice, Carla gives her two cents. “Well Sheriff, I think you may want to reconsider who you deputize from now on. That there Bull of yours is full of…well… you know what. He’s chosen a BOOM for you. I, on the other hand, think you should just throw some more coin around. That’s what we’re all here for anyway. You should pick this one,” Carla says as she points to the first card on Heather’s right.
Heather never breaks her eye lock with Carla as she places chosen card facedown between them, attempting to size up the potential bluff.
The Showdown is called and all players pick one of their two cards on the table.
“3… 2…1... Shoot!”
Heather immediately reaches for the card on her left, knowing Brandon would never let her down.
BOOM!
Heather looks at the card, then Brandon, then back again in disbelief. “Why you dirty son-of-a…”
Hooves up, Brandon apologetically says “Hey now Sheriff, don’t be mad! You’re just usually better at this game than me, I knew I had to get you out early if I was gonna stand a chance!”
Carla chimes in as she collects 2 silver from the player her right, “See Sheriff, you just never know who to trust. Such a shame.” She lets out a small howl under her breath as she counts her coins.
Heather turns toward Brandon, “Good luck playing her on the next Showdown!”
End of Shootout — Grab the Loot
If 1 player is left, they will take the entire winning pot. If multiple players are left, they will split the winning pot evenly. Any extra coins are left in the center to start the winning pot for the next round.
End of Round Clean Up — Reset Hands & Pay Your Dues
All players at the table will now reset their hands to the Starting Setup and turn their Character Card back over with the BOOM side face-down. Used Character Ability Cards are flipped back over and are now usable again for the next Shootout.
Any player who won the Shootout puts 2 silver into the winning pot. All other players put 1 coin (if possible) into the winning pot. If a player is unable to put a coin into the pot (because they have no money), they continue playing as normal.
Winning the Game
After 3 Shootouts have been played, all coins are counted. The player with the most coins is declared the winner!
Tie Breaker
- The player with the fewest BOOM Cards left in their hand of unplayed cards wins. If there is still a tie...
- The player who has the fewest number of steals in their Played Card Pile wins. If there is still a tie...
- Have an eliminated player collect BOOM Cards for the number of tied players minus 1, then add 1 Click Card. Shuffle the cards, then let player chooses a card starting with the player that held the Turn Order Token last. Tied players reveal each card simultaneously. The player that chose the Click Card wins.
Finer Details
- During Turn-Parts 1 & 2, all other players at the table, except the current player, should know what was picked prior to placing it face-down on the table. The current player should only be able to see the backs of the cards in their hand.
- Revealed cards stay face up in your Played Card Pile; these cards will remain viewable by all players as long as they are on the table. All other cards remain face-down.
- No player should look at the front of any cards they have in hand, and should only be able to see the card backs.
- If there are only 2 players left alive that can still play at the end of a Showdown, please use the 2-Player Stand-Off rules on the next page for the rest of the Shootout.
- On rare occasions, all players could have played a BOOM Card by the end of the Shootout. If that is the case, all money is left in the winning pot for the next Shootout and players move on to End of Shootout Cleanup.
- Players are not removed from the game if they have no coins. They simply have nothing to steal and don’t have to pay anything into the pot. They can, however, be eliminated because of a BOOM Card.
2-Player Stand-Off
Occasionally there will be only two players left and the end of a Showdown. If that is the case, please use the following rules for the rest of the Shootout:
Turn - Part 1
The current player asks the other remaining player which card they should play. The other player may lie, tell the truth, or say nothing about the card they are picking. They must pick 1 card out of the current player’s hand, then place it face-down on the table to left side of the current player.
Turn - Part 2
The current player must pick a card at random from their own hand and then place that card face-down on the table on their right side.
The other player now completes their Turn.
Showdown
Once the Turns are completed, each player must pick either the card on their left or the card on their right. When both players have made their decision to either trust the other player or trust their random pick, they then reveal their cards simultaneously.
The rest of the Showdown continues as normal.
Note: Make sure that the Turn Order Token gets passed to the other player, and flipped, at the end of each Showdown.
Continue to play until both players have 1 card left unplayed, 1 player is left alive, or both players have played a BOOM Card, then move on to End of Shootout Cleanup.
Character Bios & Ability Descriptions
Character Abilities are playable once per Shootout. If a player chooses to use their ability during a Shootout, they then flip their Character Ability Card over and leave it face-down until End of Shootout Cleanup.
During End of Shootout Cleanup, used Character Ability Cards are flipped back over, face up, and are usable again for the next Shootout.
Figuring out the best time to use a character’s ability, or when to force someone into using their ability, can have big impacts on your success in the game! Play wisely!
Carla Coyote - The Card Shark
Ability: During the Showdown, if the card you picked is a BOOM Card put it back in your hand and shuffle face-down. The BOOM Card does not effect you; you remain alive! Choose a random card from your hand and place it face-down in to your Played Card Pile, as if it had been revealed.
Brandon Bull - The Deputy
Ability: At the start of the Showdown, before cards are revealed, force any player to pick the card of your choice. If it is a Click: Steal 2 Coins Card, then those coins go to you.
Heather Horse - The Sheriff
Ability: At the beginning of the Showdown, before cards are selected and revealed, pick the player on your left or right. They must truthfully tell you what card they picked for you.
Felix Fox - The Grifter
Ability: At the start of your Turn, you may swap your hand with another player. After swapping, both players must shuffle their new hands face-down before fanning them away from themselves.
Rory Raccoon - The Outlaw
Ability: At the end of a Showdown, steal coins from the pot equal to the number of cards you have in your Played Card Pile from the entire Shootout so far.
Jill Jackrabbit - The Quickdraw
Ability: At the beginning of Turn - Part 1, when you are the current player, you may look at one card in your hand.
Quick Play
If you are playing with a casual group, or just want a quick way to play the game, the Quick Play rules are a great alternative.
- Quick Play does not use any coins for play. Text and icons on the Click Cards that refer to money are ignored and Character Ability Cards are not used.
- Each player starts with 5 Click Cards and 1 BOOM Card.
- The game plays as normal, with Click Cards being a safe card to play and BOOM Cards eliminating a player.
- Play for 1 Shootout. The player (or players) with 1 unplayed card left is declared the winner!
Advanced Play
The Advanced Play rules offer a more challenging form of play, with more choices and strategies.
Substitute these alternate rules for the Turn — Part 2 and Showdown portions of a Shootout.
Turn — Part 2 (Advanced)
The current player then turns to the player on their right and asks them which card they should play. The player on the right can say anything they like about the card they are picking or the card picked by the previous player. The player on the right then picks 1 card out of the current players hand, placing it face-down on the table between them, or picks the same card as the player on the left. If the same card is picked, the current player will have to randomly choose a card from their own hand, placing it face-down on the table to the right.
The current player then places their remaining hand face-down in front of them.
Showdown (Advanced)
Resolve the revealed cards in the following manner:
Click: Pay Coin To Pot
- Place 1 of your silver coins into the winning pot at the center of the table.
Click: 2 Coins Stolen - Picked for You
- If you play this card, and it was chosen by both left and right players, neither player receives the money. This is an effective way to block someone from stealing.
Click: 2 Coins Stolen - Picked by You
- If you play this card, and it was chosen by you, no player steals from you.
BOOM
- You are dead. Flip your Character Card over to reveal the BOOM side. Place the rest of your cards face-down in front of you. You are eliminated from the current Shootout and do not pass any cards to any of the other players.
