Setup instructions
-
Each player takes a player board and places 10 player cubes of one colour beside it.
-
Each player has a resource per turn counter at the bottom of the board. This shows how many resources you will gather in the Gather & Trade phase. In the start, you will have one nest that produces 2 food, so place a cube on the number 2 in the food table.
-
The players take the big and small player birds in the same colour as their cubes.
-
The maximum number of birds are indicated on the player boards.
-
The players take the outposts tokens and the nest token in the same colour as their player cubes.
-
Decide on the first player.
-
Every hill on the game boards is regarded as a location.
-
Each player takes a turn (starting with the first player and going clockwise) when placing the game boards on the table. Each player places two game boards of their choice on the table. At least one side of each game board must be connected to another gameboard and every location have to be reachable when moving birds.
Birds will be following the lines between locations. In a 6 player game, 2 of the players will only place one game board. 10 gameboards are the maximum.
-
Place your nest and a little bird in any location on the game board that is not closer than 4 locations from another player's nest.
-
Place the Turn order and puzzle sheet next to the game board.
-
Place the Ability tokens next to the game board.
2 player setup
- Take 2 sets of number tokens with the numbers 1-9 (18 number tokens).
- Take 2 each of fire, rope, basket, fur and knife tokens (10 tech tokens).
- Each player takes 1 tech token of their choice and places it next to their player board.
- The players then place the remaining number and tech tokens as they wish one by one on the game board (must be placed on a location and face-up), the first player starts placing one token then players place tokens clockwise until every token has been placed. If you want more randomness players can shuffle the tokens and then place them randomly on the board (face-down).
- Only one token can be placed at one location.
- Players take 2 outcast birds each and place them on any location they want on the game board but not on an location closer than 4 steps to another bird. Outcasts can only defend a location and cannot attack (they even defend against the player that has placed them). They have 2 armor points plus the defense dice.
- Players can place a maximum of 2 outcast birds per location. The outcast birds will then defend with 4 armor points and the defense dice.
- Each player takes 3 bonus cards (+1, +2, +3) of each type. Each player should have 9 cards in total. Continue to the Turn order/How to play section on page 7.

Player boards
- The costs of the upgrades on the player board are indicated inside the square and the reward is indicated outside the square.
- When you pay the resources for an upgrade you place a cube in the square to mark that you have unlocked it.
- You can only use one player cube per upgrade branch, and it is only the reward from the upgrade tier that the cube is placed at that can be used.
- If you have upgraded to a bow you can attack from an adjacent location. When attacking with a bow from an adjacent location, no birds are lost if the attacker loses. If the attacker and the defender are standing in the same location, the rules are the same as a regular battle.
The player board also shows:
- The standard defense strength of the bird.
- The special ability that the player starts with.
- Here you can place additional abilities gained by paying 10 of any resource. A placed ability will only affect the chosen bird type if not stated otherwise in the ability explanation.
- The standard attack strength of the bird.
- The number of food each bird costs to train and place in the nest.
- The maximum number of birds you may have on the gameboard. Every faction have two kinds of birds. Quails for example can have a maximum have 14 birds in play at the same time (5 large and 9 small birds).
Upgrade branches:
- You must upgrade from left to right on outposts, nest and armor.
- Upgrade from the bottom to the top on weapons. The cost to upgrade is the numbers in the rectangle and outside is the reward.
- This is where you build your puzzle (cave painting) after you gathered all the 9-number tokens. If you collect the same number twice you lay it beside your player board.
- This is where you place your gathered tech tokens if you have the resources to unlock the technology. The number of resources is indicated inside the rectangle and the reward is indicated outside the rectangle. Some technologies are needed when upgrading your upgrade branches. For example, a rope is needed when upgrading to the last nest.
- This is where you keep track of your gathered resources.
- This is where you keep track of the resources you get each turn.
Battles
The player that moves their bird into a location with enemy birds and/or enemy outpost or nest is considered the attacker and the other player is the defender.
The attacker chooses to play any number of bonus cards and then the defender decides to use bonus cards or not. Players show how many they want to use but only reveal them after the die roll.
The attacker counts the amount of attack points indicated on the player board and any additional attack points from upgrades on their player board.
The defender counts the number of defense points indicated on the birds and any defense bonus points from upgrades on their player board. If a player has more than one bird the points are added together (Only bird points and not upgrades). If the defender stands on a nest or an outpost the player counts any amount of bonus from their upgrades on the player board and adds it to the bird's defense points.
The attacking player rolls the attack dice, and the defender rolls the defense dice and adds the number to their attack points - respective defense points.
Then the player with the most points wins the battle, but the attacking player wins ties.
The losing player removes the birds from the game board and any of their outposts in that location. The losing player birds or/and outpost that is removed from the game board cannot be used again.
If a player loses an outpost, the attacker takes a number or tech token of their choice but not a token that is placed on the player board. If a player moves into a location with only an enemy outpost or a nest, the attacking points and defense points (if any) are compared. The attack dice and defense dice are rolled as well.
Locations
Every hill on the game boards is regarded as a location. Players move birds between locations. Outposts can be placed on locations.
Number and tech tokens are placed on locations at the start of a game. If a player moves a bird into a location containing a number or a tech token, that player places the token at the side of their player board and may use it to make technologies or puzzles.
Bonus cards
May be used to help the player that owns it in battle. Players decide how many and which cards they want to use before the battle but don't reveal them to the other players until the attack and defense dice have been rolled. Bonus cards can only be used one time and are then discarded.
The attacker chooses if they want to use any cards and must reveal the number of cards to the defending player. Then the defending player may choose to use any card of their own.
Outposts
- Costs 2 food to place.
- The player must have a bird on the location they wish to place an outpost on.
- Can be placed in any location not containing another bird's nest or outpost. If a player places an outpost on a food, wood, or on a stone location that the player will gather 1 resource in the Gather & Trade phase of that players turn.
- If a player destroys another player's outpost the winning player takes one number or tech token that is not placed on the losing players player board. (Not possible if the losing player's does not have any tokens that are not placed on their player board.) A player can only lose tokens that are placed in the correct number in the puzzle or technology slots on their player board if their nest is destroyed.
- A player destroys another player's outpost by moving a bird on to the location of the outpost and battle the outpost and any enemy birds. If the attacking player wins, the outpost, and any birds are returned to the losing player and cannot be used again.
- A player cannot move a placed outpost.
- Outposts only have the defense dice when defending alone, can be upgraded on the player boards.
- An outpost cannot attack.
Nests
- All players start with 1 nest.
- The nest gives 2 food every turn and can be placed in any location. If placed in a resource location it gathers that resource the same way as an outpost.
- Nests only have the defense dice when defending alone but can be upgraded on the player boards.
- If a player loses their nest, the player can place a new nest on an outpost, the outpost is discarded and cannot be used again. The player who caused this takes any 2 tech and 1 puzzle or 3 number tokens (if possible) from the losing player. The winning player chooses which tokens to take and can take tokens from the opponent's player board.
- If the losing player loses a tech token that gave any resources that player loses the resources for the next turn. The upgrades on weapons and the nest will stay as they were.
- A nest cannot attack.
The golden egg
On a player's turn in the develop & expand phase, the active player can choose to give away 1 puzzle or 3 number or 3 tech tokens to another player. A player will then receive the golden egg.
The other players can then take the golden egg from that player if they destroy an outpost or nest. They can then choose to take the golden egg instead of the tokens.
The player who possesses the golden egg at the end of the game receives 9 points.
Turn order / How to play
A player completes all these phases in this order then the next player does the same.
Move
- Move birds from one or two locations (not mandatory).
- If you have two birds in one location, moving them counts as one move and you can split them up so that they move to different locations.
- Birds can only move one location per turn unless it says otherwise on the player's board (ability).
- If you move to a location with enemy birds, you must attack them.
- If the battle is a draw the attacker wins.
- If you move to a location with a number or tech token you must collect it and place it beside your player board.
Gather & Trade
- Gather resources from outposts.
- Trade with other players, players can trade puzzle, number, tech tokens and resources with each other.
- Players can gather max 10 of each resource per turn. If a player for example has 7 wood and can gather 5 additional wood, only 3 will be gathered.
Develop & Expand
- Upgrade your player board, place number tokens on your player board, place new birds on the nest & place outposts on locations. Outposts cost 2 food to place.
- Instead of the above, a player can replace 3 number tokens with 1 puzzle token from beside the game boards. Can only be done if the player has all the number tokens (9) placed on their player board. A player can only replace 3 number tokens per turn and players can have pieces from the same puzzle.
- You can choose to place abilities on their player board for birds. Placed abilities only affect the birds on which they are placed if not stated otherwise in the ability explanation. Abilities must be placed before the player can use them.
- You can choose to give away 1 puzzle, 3 number or 3 tech tokens to any other player. You then receive the golden egg. This can only be done by one player see more in the Golden egg section.
Game end
If one player has completed any of the puzzles (cave painting) and two of the technologies (placed tech tokens on the player board) that player can then choose to end the game and then all players count points. The player with the most points wins. If it is a draw, the player that completed the puzzle wins.
[The scoring list is printed in the second column of the page, with no heading of its own; it is placed here under Game end.]
Points are counted as follows:
- 9 points from the puzzle (if complete).
- 1 point from each owned puzzle, number and tech token.
- 1 point from each bird in play on the game boards.
- 1 point from each outpost on the game map.
- 2 points from each completed technology (placed tech cubes on the player board).
- 4 points if the player has 10 food, stone, and wood when the game ends.
- 9 points to the player who owns the golden egg.
Player elimination
If a player has lost their outposts and nest, that player can choose to start over with a new bird. The player places the nest and a little bird in a location without any other component and not closer than 4 locations to another nest. Then the player starts moving the next turn.
Puzzles
If a player completes the puzzle, that player will gain a special ability. A player can not have two of the same ability at the same time.
The five puzzle rewards, in the order printed:
- The player can take back 2 birds from the dead and they can be placed on the nest again if the player pays the food that it costs.
- The player can attack from an adjacent location without risking losing their birds.
- The player can move birds from one location in two steps. (once per turn). Can fly/move over enemy birds and outposts but not nests.
- The player gets the +3 upgrade in attack on their player board without paying the cost of the upgrade.
- The player can place one tech token on the player board without paying the cost.
The further abilities on the page are listed with their icons as follows:
- Move birds from one location in three steps. Discard when used.
- Choose to use attack or defense points in a battle regardless of if you are attacking or defending. Discard when used.
- Flee from one battle with your birds to an adjacent location without any other player's components. Discard when used.
- The player's birds cost 1 food less to place on the nest.
- Player birds can scare enemy birds in an adjacent location. The enemy birds are moved to that player's nest. If there already are two birds in the nest the scared birds are killed. Discard when used. Can not be used on outcast birds. Horned curassow can also only do this ability once per game.
The legend on the page explains: "This number indicates that an ability can only be used one time and have to be discarded after it has been used."
Ability explanation
An ability costs 10 of any resource. The player chooses which ability to buy and places it face-up on their player board. A player can not have two of the same ability at the same time. Players can replace placed abilities, the ability that is replaced is then discarded and can not be used again.
- The player can move birds from one location in two steps. (once per turn). can fly/move over enemy birds and outposts but not nests.
- The player gets 2 food as a one-time reward for each enemy bird they kill.
- The player can move their nest to another food location but only one time per game. The location that the nest is moved to can not contain any other player's component. If a bird is standing on the nest it is moved with the nest. Can place the nest near another bird's nest. The players can only use this on their turn. Discarded when used. Blue-eared pheasants can only do this ability once per game.
- 1 extra attack point but only in one battle per turn.
- When placed the player gets the first upgrade on the nest branch for free. If the player already has the upgrade this will have no effect. The effect is permanent even after the token is replaced.
- Attack from an adjacent location. Discard when used.
- If a player has 2 birds in one location the player can make one new small bird for free. The new bird will be placed in an adjacent location. It must be placed in a location without any components. If not possible the player can not use this ability. Discarded when used.
- Fly with birds from one location to the nest. Can only be done in the move phase but does not count as a move. Discard when used.
- If a bird with this ability is defending an outpost the attacking birds are killed instantly and this ability is discarded.
- +1 defense.
- When killing another bird the player can take one bird back from death and place it in the nest. Discard when used.
Solo Mode
In the solo mode of Clash of Galliformes, one player faces off against the untamed pheasants. The goal of the game is to either:
- eliminate the untamed pheasant nest
- survive for 20 turns
- make your cave painting and develop 2 technologies before 20 turns.
Set up the map in a shape of a 2-player game (with 4 map tiles). Choose the bird tribe you want to play as and take your components. Use another player color for the untamed pheasant nest and outposts and place these components along with the grey untamed pheasant meeples next to the board. Place the turn tracker next to the play area and place the turn marker on 1. Number tokens and the golden egg are not used in solo mode.
In the solo mode, start with a nest (choose where to place it) and a small bird as usual. Place the untamed pheasant nest with a bird anywhere you choose (but not closer than 4 spaces away from your nest).
- Take 2 sets of technology and number tokens.
- Take 2 technology tokens (of your choice) and place them beside your player board, you will have these from the start of the game.
- Shuffle the remaining tokens and place them face down on spaces on the board. (Just like in a normal 2-player game)
The player turns work the same as in a multiplayer game and the turn marker will move 1 step during each start of the player's turn.
UP birds cannot move from the nest during the turn that they have spawned.
The untamed pheasants do not use a player board and do not use resources to expand. Follow the algorithm below in priority order from 1-6 to control the untamed pheasants. (Unlike the player they can move birds from more than 2 locations). Only one bird or group of birds can be moved when resolving a step in the algorithm.
- If untamed pheasant (UP) birds are present in the UP nest, move them out of the nest in the direction of the nearest space on which they can place an outpost (if possible, also in the direction of the player nest). If two or more are possible, select one of your choices.
- If a player bird, outpost or nest is within 2 spaces away from a UP bird, the UP bird moves toward the player bird to attack.
- If a player bird is within 3 spaces of the UP nest, the closest UP bird to the UP nest moves back towards the UP nest.
- If a lonely UP bird is within 2 spaces away from another lonely UP bird, they will try to move together to build a group. The player chooses which two birds to group together.
- If a UP bird is within two spaces of a space on which it can place an outpost (if possible, also in the direction of the player nest), it moves towards it. Prioritize birds closest to the player's nest.
- UP birds move toward the closest player outpost or nest to destroy it. Prioritize groups of UP birds for these movements. If two birds are grouped together on a turn the bird with one movement left cannot move this turn.
Untamed pheasant combat strength
Lonely untamed pheasant (UP) birds have the attack and defense strength of 3. This means that a group (two) of UP birds have a combined strength of 6 in both defense and attack.
Each time a player outpost is destroyed by UP birds, that outpost is placed next to the board. For each player outpost that is placed here, all UP birds get +1 in attack strength. On turns 10 and 15 the UP birds get +1 in attack and defense.
Each time a player loses birds to UP birds in battle, the UP birds receive upgrades as stated below. For each new battle won by the UP birds, a new upgrade is added, and previous ones are still in effect. Place 1 player bird meeple next to the board for each lost battle to keep track of UP upgrades. Note that these only counts toward lost battles and not lost birds.
- 1 battle won against the player - UP outposts and nest receive +1 defense.
- 2 battles won against the player - UP birds can move up to 2 spaces in the first move every turn.
- 3 battles won against the player - UP birds becomes ranged and they will attack player birds, outposts, and nest from adjacent spaces.
Additional rules
- Untamed pheasant (UP) birds will construct an outpost for free each time they move to a space without outposts, or when they destroy a player outpost.
- UP birds will pick up technology and number tokens when they move on them. These tokens are placed faceup next to the board and can be stolen by the player when destroying UP outposts. Destroyed UP outposts can be used again and are not out of the game.
- If more than one option is available for UP bird movement, the option that the player perceives to be the worst for the player should be chosen.
- If the player's nest is destroyed, it is relocated to the nearest outpost of the player's choice.
- The player loses the game if their nest is destroyed, and no outposts remain.
- The player wins the game if:
- the UP nest is destroyed
- if the turn marker reaches 20 on the turn tracker.
- if the cave painting is complete and two technologies have been developed.
- Defeated UP birds are placed back next to the board and can be hatched again.
