Components
- 2 Vigilante/Skill Cards
- 7 Enemy/Street Cards, including 1 Boss Man card
- 3 Dice (6 Sided) or 3 Paperclips
- 4 Small Cubes (Ideally 8mm or smaller)
Setup
- Place the Boss Man card face down (showing the Cafe Bar), then shuffle the 6 other Street/Enemy Cards, and deal 4 in a row to the Cafe Bar's left, Street side up, forming the Screen on which you will play.
- Place the remaining 2 cards Enemy side up on the right 2 Street cards.
- Select a Vigilante card to play as, and place it on the leftmost Street card.
- Place a dice on the Vigilante and Enemy cards showing their Health values (the number of yellow blocks at the top of their cards). Alternatively, use a paperclip to track the health of each card, starting on the rightmost yellow block.
- Place the remaining card Skill side up, with cubes on the second section of each of the four Skill Meters.
Objective
The goal of the game is to defeat the Boss Man card, by reducing his Health to zero; to get to him you'll have to defeat his minions first. If your Vigilante's Health is ever reduced to zero, the game is over - you'll need to Insert Coins to play again.
Playing the Game
The game is played in a repeating series of turns, until the player wins or loses. Each turn contains 3 phases:
- Vigilante Phase
- Enemy Phase
- Scroll Phase
Vigilante Phase
In the Vigilante Phase, your Vigilante gets to act, selecting a Skill and performing its Actions to Move, Attack, Shoot and Heal.
On your Skill card are four Skills; Punch, Kick, Shoot and Dodge. Each Skill has 4 Charge Levels; the dark section on the left is the least powerful, and the white section to the right is the most powerful.
The Charge Level of each Skill is tracked by a cube.
In the Vigilante Phase you will perform the following steps in order.
- Select a Skill and perform the Actions under its current Charge Level, from left to right. Actions are detailed on the next page.
- Reset the selected Skill to the lowest Charge Level.
- Select 2 Skills and increase the Charge Level of each by 1. You may increase the Charge Level of the Skill you have just used, but may not boost the same Skill twice.
Example - The player above selects the Kick Skill, so performs 2 Move Actions then an Attack Action, resets Kick to the lowest level, then boosts Punch and Kick by one Charge Level each.
Actions
There are four Actions your Vigilante can perform. Actions must be performed from left to right as specified on the Skill Card, but Actions are always optional.
- Move - Move the Vigilante card one Street card to the left or right on the Screen. If there is an Enemy card on the Street card the Vigilante is moving to, swap places with it. The Vigilante may not move off the Screen.
- Example - The Vigilante may move to the empty Street to the left, or swap places with the Enemy 'Rash' to the right.
- Attack - Reduce the Health of an adjacent Enemy card by 1. You may not Attack an Enemy card that is not adjacent to the Vigilante. If the Enemy reaches 0 Health, remove from the Screen and place it to one side.
- Shoot - Reduce the Health of a non-adjacent Enemy card by 1. You may not Shoot an Enemy card that is adjacent to the Vigilante. If the Enemy reaches 0 Health, remove from the Screen and place it to one side.
- Heal - Increase your Vigilante's Health by 1, to a maximum of 6.
Enemy Phase
In the Enemy Phase, each Enemy card Activates, performing its Behaviours. The Enemy Card furthest left at the start of the Enemy Phase Activates first, then, if there is a second Enemy card on the Screen, it will Activate.
- Behaviours performed when starting to the Right of the Vigilante
- Behaviours performed when starting to the Left of the Vigilante
Each Enemy card has two Behaviour Boxes; it performs the Behaviours in the box closest to the Vigilante at the point when it Activates, i.e. if the Enemy is to the right of the Vigilante it will Activate its left Behaviour Box, and vice versa. Behaviours are performed from top to bottom in the relevant Behaviour Box.
Example - The Enemy on the left Activates first, using its right Behaviour Box, performing Jump Right Behaviour twice.
The first Enemy's Behaviours may move cards around, so the second Enemy might be in a different position relative to the Vigilante when it Activates.
Behaviours
When an Enemy card Activates, it performs the Behaviours in its relevant Behaviour Box, in order from top to bottom. There are several possible Behaviours:
- Move Left - If there is an empty Street card one space to the Enemy's left, move the Enemy there. The Enemy will not Move onto a Street card with the Vigilante or another Enemy, and will not Move off the Screen.
- Move Right - If there is an empty Street card one space to the Enemy's right, move the Enemy there. The Enemy will not Move onto a Street card with the Vigilante or another Enemy, and will not Move off the Screen.
- Jump Left - Move the Enemy card one Street card to the left on the Screen. If there is another card on the Street card the Enemy is moving to, swap places with it. The Enemy may not move off the Screen.
- Jump Right - Move the Enemy card one Street card to the right on the Screen. If there is another card on the Street card the Enemy is moving to, swap places with it. The Enemy may not move off the Screen.
- Attack - If the Vigilante is adjacent to the Enemy card, reduce the Vigilante's Health by 1.
- Shoot - If the Vigilante is not adjacent to the Enemy card, reduce the Vigilante's Health by 1.
- Push Left - If the Vigilante is exactly one Street Card to the left of the Enemy Card, the Vigilante is moved one space left, as if the Vigilante used a Move Action to move left, including swapping with another card if necessary.
- Push Right - If the Vigilante is exactly one Street Card to the right of the Enemy Card, the Vigilante is moved one space right, as if the Vigilante used a Move Action to move right, including swapping with another card if necessary.
If a Behaviour cannot be performed, skip it and move to the next Behaviour. Once all Behaviours in the Behaviour Box have been resolved, the Enemy has finished Activating.
Scroll Phase
The Scroll Phase only happens if there is an Enemy card put aside due to being reduced to 0 Health this turn. If not, the turn ends, so start a new turn with the Vigilante Phase.
In the Scroll Phase, perform the following in order:
- Place the defeated Enemy card to the right of the existing Screen, Street side up.
- Place the leftmost Screen card Enemy side up on the new Street card, and place a dice or paperclip on it to track its Health.
- Slide right any cards which have fallen off the left of the Screen, making room by sliding other cards if necessary.
If both Enemy cards were defeated in one turn, repeat the Scroll Phase.
