Components

The expansion contains:

  1. Cheesy Gonzola figure
  2. 5 hat ribbons in different colours
  3. 1 cardboard tower
  4. 3 special sliding tiles: "Cheesy Gonzola", "Secret passage to the pantry" and "Cheese-moving mechanism"
  5. A team of grey mice for the fifth player

By the way, the box of this expansion has enough room to store the base game components as well.

Goal of the Game

Using your team of mice, be the first to collect 5 pieces of cheese of different kinds.

Preparation for the First Game

Before the first game, carefully punch the game elements out of the cardboard frame. Be careful when assembling the tower, as it is easily damaged, so follow the diagram in the picture strictly.

Playing with Five Players

With this expansion, five people can play Château Roquefort at the same time. To do this, give the fifth player a team of grey mice and the cardboard tower (see the Movable Tower variant below).

When playing with five, a very important rule applies: if four players have each obtained a tile of the same kind of cheese, the fifth player can no longer take a cheese tile of that same kind, even if their mice are able to find it.

Variants

Using this expansion with the base game Château Roquefort, you can try additional variants:

  • Cheesy Gonzola
  • Movable Tower
  • Cheese-moving mechanism
  • Pantry

...as well as other variants you may come up with by combining the components of the base game and this expansion.

The basic rules of the game remain unchanged. The rules for the variants proposed with this expansion are described in detail below.

Variant 1: Cheesy Gonzola

Cheesy Gonzola is a rather sly little mouse with a changeable character. He may first help you, and then easily start supporting your rivals. He can run across the roofs and takes much longer strides than ordinary mice. Thanks to his sombrero, Gonzola does not fall into the traps and so never ends up in the dungeon.

Setup

Place the sliding tile "Cheesy Gonzola" in the centre of the Castle and put the Gonzola figure on this tile. Then place the roofs, covering all the rooms except the one where Gonzola stands.

If a player chooses to use a sliding tile on their turn, they may choose either of the two free tiles (the second tile appears because the Gonzola tile has been introduced into the game). At the start of the game, place the sliding tiles so that, where possible, neutral tiles (with no cheese and no hole) are among the free ones.

Each player also receives a hat ribbon of their colour.

Playing the Game

Hat ribbon for Gonzola. When your mouse arrives on the tile showing Gonzola, put a ribbon of your colour on Gonzola's sombrero. If another player's ribbon is already on his hat, return that ribbon to its owner and put on your own. If the ribbon on Gonzola's sombrero is your colour, you may use him to perform an action as if he were a mouse from your team.

Action: "Remove a roof of the Castle with Gonzola". Gonzola may remove roofs that are not only next to him but also those that touch the room in which he is. As usual, removing one roof costs one action point.

Action: "Move Gonzola". Gonzola may:

  • run across the roofs (but may not stop on them, ending his turn);
  • run across the mousetrap holes (and may even stop on them);
  • jump over several spaces during his movement.

Gonzola's movement differs greatly from that of ordinary mice. One step counts as:

  • a step onto any unoccupied space in the same room where he is;
  • a step into an adjacent room onto any unoccupied space;
  • stepping onto a roof.

Illustration caption: "I can reach this cheese in just 2 steps."

The picture illustrates an example. To reach the room where the cheese is, Gonzola first runs from his starting room onto the roof of the neighbouring room. With his second step he quickly runs from the roof into the third room, where he immediately stands on the cheese space. Note that when leaving the starting room, Gonzola did not fall into the trap but successfully jumped over it.

Gonzola and the traps. Gonzola's sombrero saves him from the traps and does not let him fall into the dungeon. Be careful: if you want to use the sliding tiles to shift a row, lift Gonzola out of the pit for the time being, and then put him back on the same spot.

Gonzola as a cheese hunter. If a ribbon of your colour is on Gonzola's sombrero, you may use him to collect cheese just like any other mouse in your team.

Variant 2: Movable Tower

The tower is needed when playing with five players. The cardboard tower from this expansion is:

  • a Movable Tower;
  • usable (like any other tower) to enter the Castle;
  • always used when 5 players take part.

Setup

As before, at the start of the game each player places one of their mice in a tower of the Castle. The fifth player, however, places their mouse in the Movable Tower, which is then set up at any available place along any wall of the Castle, except the sections of wall where the four main towers of the Castle are placed.

Illustration captions: "In this way the Tower is attached to a wall of the Castle." and "Each side of the Castle wall has 5 places where the Tower can be placed."

Playing the Game

Players may use the Movable Tower to enter the Castle just like any other tower. However, players may not use a sliding tile for the row that the Movable Tower blocks.

Action: "Move the Tower". A player may move the outer Tower to any other part of the Castle wall (except the places of the permanent towers). It does not matter whose mouse is in the Tower at that moment; the Tower may even contain no mice at all.

Each move of the Tower counts as 1 action. During a turn, a player may move the Tower several times.

Variant 3: Cheese-moving Mechanism

The mechanism allows players to use a sliding tile additionally and for free.

Setup

Additionally, place the special sliding tile "Cheese-moving mechanism" from this expansion on the game board.

If a player chooses to use a sliding tile on their turn, they may choose either of the two free tiles (the second tile appears because the Cheese-moving mechanism has been introduced). At the start of the game, place the sliding tiles so that, where possible, neutral tiles (with no cheese and no hole) are among the free ones.

Playing the Game

If a player's mouse is on the Cheese-moving mechanism tile, then during their turn that player may, without spending any action points, perform "Moving tiles".

If during one turn another mouse of the same player arrives on this tile, the player may again perform the tile-moving action without spending action points.

Variant 4: Pantry

The pantry room is a room located outside the Castle:

  • it has only one entrance and exit: the tile "Secret passage to the pantry";
  • the room contains 4 free sliding tiles which are not currently in the Castle;
  • desired pieces of cheese often end up in this room, and they are fairly easy to obtain.

Setup

For the game you need all the sliding tiles from the base game and from this expansion. At the start, place the sliding tiles so that, where possible, neutral tiles (with no cheese and no hole) are among the free ones.

Place the remaining 4 tiles next to the Castle; they will count as the pantry room.

Playing the Game

Action: "Moving a mouse" (pantry). A mouse may spend 1 action to:

  • move from the "Secret passage to the pantry" tile onto any unoccupied tile in the pantry room;
  • move within the pantry room from one tile to any other (unoccupied) tile;
  • return from the pantry room back to the Castle onto an unoccupied "Secret passage to the pantry" tile.

Up to 3 mice may be in the pantry room at the same time.

If any mouse stands on the "Secret passage to the pantry" tile, that tile counts as occupied. While it is occupied, nobody can enter the pantry or return from it to the Castle.

Inside the pantry room, tiles with holes do not count as mousetraps; you may stand on them like any other tile.

Illustration caption: "I can get into the pantry in just 2 steps."

Action: "Using a sliding tile" (pantry). For this action, choose any tile in the pantry. Afterwards, place on its position the tile that becomes free as a result of the row being shifted. If a mouse stands on the chosen tile, move that mouse to any other unoccupied tile in the pantry room.
