Objective

To play all of the cards in the deck, while earning points.

How To Play

The Player shuffles the deck of cards and places them face down on the table, forming the draw pile. The player then draws one card from the draw pile and places it face up on the table. The player then proceeds to draw one card from the draw pile, placing it horizontally, vertically, or diagonally touching the previously played card, face up. Play proceeds in this manner until all cards from the draw pile have been played, or the cards draw an end to the game.

The Cards

Mouse Cards are used to gain points by surrounding Cheese Cards, they are also used for surrounding Mousetrap Cards to extend play. 1 point is gained for each active Mouse Card.

Cat Cards make any Mouse Card that touches it on either of its four sides, not it's diagonals, inactive. Cats can not be deactivated by being surrounded.

Cheese Cards are used to gain 10 bonus points, if they are surrounded by a Mouse Card on each of its four sides, not its diagonals. Cheese Cards give an extra 1 point bonus for each Mouse Card that touches it on each of its four sides, not it's diagonals, even if not surrounded.

If three Mousetrap Cards are in play, the game immediately ends, giving the player a score of zero, even if it is the last card played. If a player surrounds a Mousetrap Card on all four sides, not its diagonals, the Mousetrap Card is rendered inactive.

Mousetrap Tid-Bits

If a Mousetrap Card is the third Mousetrap Card played, and it is legal to place it in a group of surrounding Mouse Cards, then the Mousetrap Card is inactive and game play continues.

Mousetrap Cards must be surrounded INDIVIDUALLY, and may NOT touch each other like Cheese Cards to be rendered inactive.

Scoring

[Example 1 diagram: a cross-shaped arrangement of Mouse Cards and Cheese Cards.]

  • Nice Pts: 4
  • Surrounded Cheese Pts: 10
  • Cheese Bonus Pts: 5
  • Total Pts: 19

If a Mouse Card is touching multiple Cheese Cards and is additionally one of the four Mouse Cards surrounding a Cheese Card, the player DOES receive the 1 point Cheese Bonus for each Mouse Card.

[Example 2 diagram: one Mouse Card with a Cheese Card on each of its four sides.]

  • Nice Pts: 1
  • Surrounded Cheese Pts: 0
  • Cheese Bonus Pts: 4
  • Total Pts: 5

If a Mouse Card is touching multiple Cheese Cards, the player receives the 1 point Cheese bonus for each Cheese Card that the Mouse Card touches horizontally or vertically.

[Example 3 diagram: a row of Mouse, Mousetrap, Mouse and Cat Cards with Mouse Cards above and below the Mousetrap Card.]

  • Nice Pts: 3
  • Surrounded Cheese Pts: 0
  • Cheese Bonus Pts: 0
  • Total Pts: 3

If a Cat Card is touching a Mouse Card that is surrounding a Mousetrap Card, the Mouse Card is inactive and the player does not render the Mousetrap Card inactive.

[Example 4 diagram: a Mouse Card surrounding a Cheese Card, with a Cat Card touching the Mouse Card on one side.]

  • Nice Pts: 3
  • Surrounded Cheese Pts: 0
  • Cheese Bonus Pts: 3
  • Total Pts: 6

If a Cat Card is touching a Mouse Card that is surrounding a Cheese Card, the Mouse Card is inactive and the player does not receive the surrounded Cheese bonus, nor the 1 point for that individual Mouse Card. The same applies to a Cat Card touching multiple Mouse Cards.

[Example 5 diagram: a Cheese Card surrounded on all four sides by Mouse Cards.]

  • Nice Pts: 4
  • Surrounded Cheese Pts: 10
  • Cheese Bonus Pts: 4
  • Total Pts: 18

The player still receives the 1 point for each Mouse Card, even if they are a part of a group that is surrounding a Cheese or Mousetrap Card.

[Example 6 diagram: two rows of Cheese Cards side by side, each surrounded by Mouse Cards.]

  • Nice Pts: 7
  • Surrounded Cheese Pts: 60
  • Cheese Bonus Pts: 8
  • Total Pts: 75

If multiple Cheese Cards are touching each other on either of the four sides, and are surrounded on all sides, not diagonals, by Mouse Cards, then the player receives double the amount of points that the Cheese Cards total.

  • Example: 2 Cheese Cards=40 points
  • 3 Cheese Cards=60 points, etc.

Losing the Game

If no legal moves are available and all cards are not yet played, the game is over and the player receives 0 points for the game.

If three active Mousetrap Cards are in the playing area, Mousetraps which are not surrounded by Mouse Cards, the game is over and the player receives 0 points for the game.

Winning the Game

The player wins if he/she has played all cards from the draw pile into the playing area. Add together all points scored and try to beat your personal high score!
