Components
- 60 product cards
- 24 bargain cards
- 30 change tokens
- 30 dice
- 1 checkout board
- 1 reference card
Setup
Give each player a set of 5 dice in one colour.
Place the checkout board in the centre, equidistant from all players.
Shuffle the product cards and the bargain cards separately and place each deck nearby. You are ready to start!
Object of the Game
Check Out! is played over 5 rounds: 4 normal rounds and 1 bonus round. After the bonus round, players compare their scores and the player with the highest score wins!
Round Start
Reveal 2 product cards per player and place them in the centre. Then reveal a number of bargain cards equal to the number of players and place them next to the checkout board.
(Example: setup for a 4-player game.)
Buying Frenzy
Each player may look over the revealed products for a few seconds. Then the player who put out the products gives everyone the signal to start rolling the dice! (It is recommended to simply count "3, 2, 1, Go!")
Real-Time Play
Check Out! is a real-time game: all players take their turns at the same time. Everyone rolls all of their dice simultaneously and must match the faces shown on the product cards in order to grab them.
To grab a product, you must roll enough dice to show all of the faces shown on the card in a single roll. For example, to grab this Hot Dog you need to roll one 5 and one 6 and place those dice on the card.
Dice placed on a product remain there until the end of the round. You may only grab a product if your roll matches all of the faces shown on it in a single roll. You may grab several products with a single roll. Once a die has been placed on a product, no one else may place dice on that product.
You may re-roll as many times as you like, but each re-roll must include all dice that have not been placed.
The Queue
At any time during the round, you may join the queue to check out.
The queue is represented by the spaces on the checkout board.
To join the queue, place your remaining dice on the rightmost empty space. Checking out means leaving the round.
If you are the only player still holding dice, you must stop re-rolling immediately. You grab whatever products you can with your current dice faces, then place your remaining dice on the rightmost empty space of the queue.
Checkout Phase
Once all players have placed their dice in the queue or used up their dice, the checkout phase begins.
First, each player takes the products that have dice on them.
Then, using the dice placed in the queue, players take turns in order to buy as many bargains as they like.
Each bargain has a base price. Some bargains also have a promo price that can be used when a condition is met.
(Example: this bag of Nachos normally costs 2 dice. However, if you grabbed a drink this round, you can get it for 1 die!)
Promo conditions
- Drink icon (milk carton): you grabbed a drink this round.
- Food icon (bento box): you grabbed a food this round.
- Snack icon (crisps bag): you grabbed a snack this round.
- Last icon ("LAST"): this is the last bargain item.
Players take their turns from the rightmost player in the queue to the leftmost. Bargains that have been bought are not replaced.
Instead of buying a bargain, you may take 1 change token for each die you have left in the queue.
The round ends after all players in the queue have taken their turn. A player who did not place any dice in the queue when the checkout phase began cannot buy a bargain, even if the bargain costs no dice.
Round End
Take and keep the product cards that were not grabbed; they will be used in the bonus round. Discard the remaining bargain cards.
All players turn the products they grabbed this round face down and collect their dice.
Add 1 change token to the "BONUS" space of the checkout board. If there are now 4 tokens on the BONUS space, the bonus round begins. Otherwise, begin a new round by following the Round Start instructions.
Bonus Round
In the bonus round, instead of the usual setup, use all of the product cards you set aside, plus 1 product card added from the deck.
You start the bonus round with 0 dice. For each change token you spend, you gain 1 die, up to a maximum of 5 extra dice.
Each player must simultaneously decide how many change tokens they wish to spend in this round.
The bonus round is played like a normal round, except that there are no bargains to buy and any dice left over do not turn into change tokens. However, the first player to check out takes the 4 tokens from the BONUS space.
If only one player takes part in the bonus round (all other players are unable or unwilling to pay at least 1 die), that player may set their dice to any combination of faces and grab the products that match. The bonus round then ends. The 4 tokens on the BONUS space are discarded.
End of Game Scoring
When the bonus round has ended, each player calculates their final score. The player with the highest score wins!
- Products and bargains: the points shown by the star symbols on the product and bargain cards you have. (The star values printed on the cards are the points they are worth.)
- Change tokens: 1 point for each change token you hold.
- Sets of products: 3 points for each set of products you hold. A set consists of 1 product from each category: snack, food and drink.
(Example set: one snack (crisps), one food (bento) and one drink (milk carton).)
