Setup

Before playing with the Valhalla expansion, set up the game by the base rules, following them exactly unless this section says otherwise. If you play with both expansions, Valhalla and The Dark Mountains, follow the setup instructions of both expansions. Step 1 of each rulebook asks you to shuffle the expansion's elements into the base game's elements; do this step once, for both expansions together.

Some Valhalla elements are designed to be combined with the Champions of Midgard base game. Valhalla elements are marked with the Valhalla icon so they are easy to remove if you wish. Some elements are marked with the Dark Mountains icon. Remove them if you are not playing with The Dark Mountains expansion.

  1. Before playing the expansion for the first time, shuffle the new Fate cards, Rune cards and tent in with the components of the base game.
  2. Place the Berserker and Shieldwarrior dice beside the board, with the other Viking dice.
  3. Place the sacrifice tokens beside the board, with the other tokens.
  4. Place the Valhalla board beside the main board.
  5. Shuffle the Valkyrie Blessing cards and place the deck face down on the marked space. Then place 1 card face up on each of the 4 empty spaces.
  6. Shuffle the Epic Monster cards and reveal 2 of them (3 when playing with four or five players), placing them on the marked spaces of the Valhalla board. Return unused cards to the box.
  7. Give each player a Leader Ability board matching their chosen Viking Leader, and a burial board. Place the Leader Ability board below the Leader board, and the burial board beside it.
  8. Finally, give each player 1 Leader die in addition to their usual starting resources.

Gameplay

New Symbols and Rules

New Shieldwarrior and Berserker die symbols have been added to the game. The symbol of any Viking die also applies to the new symbols.

The game also uses the "Any Resource" symbol, which means food, wood or coins. The number in the middle of the symbol is how many resources you may gain or must spend. You may use resources of one kind or several kinds, in any combination.

Finally, shield results rolled in combat are used at the player's option. Sometimes it will be better to lose some of your Vikings. Each rolled shield cancels one loss, but you may ignore it and take the losses as if no shield had been rolled.

Leader Abilities and Leader Dice

Viking Leaders inspire their clans to work better, trade better and fight better. A Leader may inspire the people in different ways, but some skills only show on the battlefield.

Each Leader now has a secondary ability, which they may use only as a result of courage shown in battle. The Leader Ability board is placed below the Leader board. It has a space for the Leader die.

Place the Leader die in this space. Other Vikings may not visit the Leader's hall, so their dice may not be placed here.

As with other dice, the Leader die can be used in battle, and it can be lost there. The Leader die has the Leader ability symbol on one of its faces. If you roll that symbol when your Leader is taking part in a battle, immediately apply the ability on your Leader Ability board.

Example: In the first round of a battle, Tyra rolls the combination of dice shown. First she applies her Leader ability and takes 1 Any Resource (her choice of food, wood or coins) from the supply. Then she resolves combat damage, defeating a troll and losing one die.

As with other dice, a Leader die can be lost in battle. However, Leader dice are counted as wounded, not killed. They return to the supply and stay there until healed (see "Instant Valkyrie Blessings", pp. 9–10). A player may not have more than 1 Leader die.

Sacrifice Tokens

The Valhalla expansion includes sacrifice tokens matching the different types of Viking dice in the game. These tokens represent your Vikings who fell while trying to win glory and now dwell in Valhalla, where they fight the legendary monsters alongside Odin and win the favor of the Valkyries. In effect these tokens are resources, which can be spent to activate the Valkyrie Blessings or to gain rewards from the Epic Monsters.

When playing with the Valhalla expansion, each time you return one or more of your Vikings to the supply, take the matching token and keep it on your burial board.

Each time your dice return to the supply for any reason (Vikings defeated in battle, unfed on an expedition, lost to an event, and so on), you receive sacrifice tokens. You do not receive tokens when you try to gather more dice than you can have. Dice returned to the supply in that case are not yet yours, so you cannot take sacrifice tokens for them.

After resolving any battle location, you may spend any number of accumulated sacrifice tokens to apply effects on the Valhalla board: buy Valkyrie Blessing cards and/or defeat Epic Monsters. You may spend sacrifice tokens received in the current round or in earlier rounds, in any combination. If several players resolve the same battle location (for example, the Hunting Grounds), they buy cards in the order in which they placed their workers on that location. The symbol of "any sacrifice token" means any one token of your choice.

When buying Valkyrie Blessings and defeating Epic Monsters, you may acquire several cards at once. New cards are placed out only after you have made all of your purchases, unless stated otherwise.

The following actions are always available. Each time you spend sacrifice tokens, you may apply these effects one or more times:

  • Spend 2 sacrifice tokens of any kind and gain 1 Glory.
  • Spend 3 sacrifice tokens of any kind and gain a Viking die of your choice from the supply (except a Leader die).

Leader dice do not have sacrifice tokens, because a Leader cannot be killed. A Leader is only wounded, and the die returns to the supply until a Valkyrie Blessing allows you to take it back.

Example of sacrifice token use: Asmund sends 2 Swordsmen and 2 Spearmen to fight a troll. He rolls 1 blank face, 1 shield and 2 single hits. He defeats the troll and as a reward gains 6 Glory and 1 Wood. Then he discards 1 Blame and tells Gilvi to take 1 Blame from the supply. Then, as a result of the troll's attack, he sends 2 of his Swordsman dice to the supply and receives 2 Swordsman sacrifice tokens. After this battle, Asmund may spend these tokens (and any he already had) to buy Valkyrie Blessing cards, so that he can fight the Epic Monsters. This time he decides to spend only the 2 Swordsman tokens he has just received, to take the "Divine Glory" blessing. He immediately gets his Leader die and 1 Favor from the supply. (Asmund could also have bought nothing, to save the sacrifice tokens for defeating Fenrir and gaining the Glory and end-game bonus at once!)

Valkyrie Blessings

Valkyries bestow their blessings on Viking Leaders who bravely lead their warriors into glorious battle. There are 2 types of Valkyrie Blessing: instant and permanent, each described in detail on its own page. Instant Valkyrie Blessings give the most valuable reward: healing your wounded Leader, and gaining resources, glory or Viking dice. Permanent Valkyrie Blessings immediately give Glory and properties that last until the end of the game.

Cards with the same name often differ slightly in cost and effect. Pay attention to the details on the card when you buy it.

Card anatomy (diagram): card name; card cost; card effect.

Instant Valkyrie Blessings

Berserker and Shieldwarrior dice are gained mainly through instant Valkyrie Blessing cards. Each instant Valkyrie Blessing card has the Leader icon, which allows you to heal your Leader (if wounded). When you buy an instant Valkyrie Blessing card, immediately take your Leader die from the supply and place it in your play area (if you did not have it yet). At no point in the game may a player have more than 1 Leader die. The effect of an instant Valkyrie Blessing takes place immediately. After applying the effect, place the card face down in your play area.

  • Berserkers of Valhalla (4 copies): Take your Leader die from the supply. Take the stated number of Berserker dice from the supply.
  • Freyja's Blessing (3 copies): Take your Leader die from the supply. Gain Favor or discard Blame. Repeat if stated.
  • Divine Glory (5 copies): Take your Leader die from the supply. Gain the stated Favor.
  • Warriors of Valhalla (2 copies): Take your Leader die from the supply. Take the stated number of Shieldwarrior and Berserker dice from the supply.
  • Feast of Odin (3 copies): Take your Leader die from the supply. Gain 3 Food.
  • Shieldwarriors of Valhalla (4 copies): Take your Leader die from the supply. Take the stated number of Shieldwarrior dice from the supply.
  • Bounty of the Gods (3 copies): Take your Leader die from the supply. Gain 3 resources of your choice.

Remove all cards marked with the Dark Mountains icon if you are not playing with The Dark Mountains expansion.

Permanent Valkyrie Blessings

Permanent Valkyrie Blessings grant a variable amount of Glory when you buy them, and give you properties that stay in effect until the end of the game. Permanent Valkyrie Blessings carry the symbol meaning "Gain Glory equal to the current round number." When you buy a permanent Valkyrie Blessing, immediately gain Glory equal to the current round number (for example, in round 6 you gain 6 Glory). Then place the card face up in front of you.

  • Enemy Amulets (4 copies): Gain Glory immediately. From now on, you always gain 1 Any Resource (your choice) when you defeat the enemy shown. Each amulet corresponds to a specific enemy type.
  • Hunter's Bow (2 copies): Gain Glory immediately. From now on, you gain 1 Any Resource whenever you have at least 1 die on the hunt. You do not need to roll a hit to get this reward.
  • Loki's Compass (2 copies): Gain Glory immediately. From now on, after you reveal an expedition card, you may take 1 Blame from the supply to ignore the card's negative effect.
  • Slayer's Shields (4 copies): Gain Glory immediately. From now on, 1 rolled shield blocks all damage in one round of combat (against the enemy shown). Alternatively, you may lose a number of dice not exceeding the enemy's attack value. Each shield corresponds to a specific enemy type.

Remove all cards marked with the Dark Mountains icon if you are not playing with The Dark Mountains expansion.

Berserker and Shieldwarrior Dice

Berserker Dice

Berserker dice are a new, powerful type of Viking die: they have only 1 blank face and 3 double hits! However, because of their restless nature, berserkers die first. In any battle where you suffer losses (dice are removed if the enemy's attack value exceeds the number of shields rolled), sacrifice your berserkers first. Berserker dice have the following faces:

FaceResult
3 facesDouble hit (crossed hammers)
2 facesSingle hit
1 faceBlank
Shieldwarrior Dice

Shieldwarrior dice are a new, powerful type of Viking die: 3 of their faces block and strike at the same time! These warriors are excellent at protecting your wild berserkers. Shieldwarrior dice have the following faces:

FaceResult
3 facesBlock and hit (shield with hit)
1 faceDouble hit (crossed hammers)
2 facesBlank

The faces above are described from the printed icons on the rulebook page.

Epic Monsters

Epic Monsters are mighty creatures, and defeating one can bring you a great reward at the end of the game. Each one immediately grants a set amount of Glory when defeated, and its additional effects are resolved at the end of the game, often worth many victory points.

Card anatomy (diagram): card name; card cost; card effect.

The number of Epic Monsters in the game is limited, so hurry if you want to defeat one. As a rule, not every player will manage to fight such a monster. In that case, players must content themselves with buying additional Valkyrie Blessing cards.

  • Geirrod: Immediately gain 10 Glory. At the end of the game, gain 3 Glory for each jötun you have killed.
  • Jormungandr: Immediately gain 9 Glory. At the end of the game, gain 4 Glory for each monster you have killed.
  • Ymir: Immediately gain 12 Glory. At the end of the game, each blue enemy you have defeated counts twice for sets.
  • Nidhogg: Immediately gain 12 Glory. At the end of the game, each yellow enemy you have defeated counts twice for sets.
  • Pesta: Immediately gain 10 Glory. At the end of the game, gain 1 Glory for each Blame token in the game (count the Blame tokens of all players, including yourself).
  • Surtr: Immediately gain 12 Glory. At the end of the game, each red enemy you have defeated counts twice for sets.
  • Fenrir: Immediately gain 8 Glory. At the end of the game, gain 4 Glory for each troll you have killed.
  • Fylgja: Immediately gain 9 Glory. At the end of the game, double the points for each of your Fate cards.
  • Haugbui: Immediately gain 7 Glory. At the end of the game, gain 3 Glory for each draugr you have killed.

Remove all cards marked with the Dark Mountains icon if you are not playing with The Dark Mountains expansion.

New Symbols (Valhalla)

  • Shieldwarrior die symbol: a new Viking die type, part of the "any Viking die" symbol.
  • Berserker die symbol: a new Viking die type, part of the "any Viking die" symbol.
  • Any Resource: food, wood or coins; the number in the symbol is the quantity.
  • Any sacrifice token: any one sacrifice token of your choice.
  • Dark Mountains expansion: marks elements that belong to The Dark Mountains.
  • Your Leader die from the supply (if wounded): gain your Leader die back from the supply, if it is wounded.
  • Glory equal to the current round number: gain Glory equal to the number of the current round.
  • Valhalla expansion: marks elements that belong to Valhalla.

Appendix (Valhalla)

I. Viking Leaders

  • Tyra, Daughter of the Valkyrie: Tyra has always felt a connection to the spirit world, as if the blood of Valhalla's warrior women runs in her veins. When exchanging sacrifice tokens for a die, she may give any 2 tokens for a die of her choice from the supply (instead of the usual 3).
  • Hemming the Merchant: Hemming is a good warrior, but an even better craftsman, since he can convert one material into another. Once per round, Hemming may exchange his resource for any other from the supply.

II. Viking Leader Abilities

  • Asmund: Battle prayer. Gain a Favor token. Immediately gain 1 Favor token from the supply.
  • Gilvi: Supply. Gain 1 of any reward shown on the current merchant ship card. You gain only 1 item shown on the card, not the whole reward.
  • Dagrun: Foresight. Perform the action in the Seer's house. Fully perform the Seer's house action by placing this die. Choose and look at an expedition card (land or sea), then take 1 more Fate card (using Dagrun's ability to draw 2 and keep 1 of them).
  • Jorunn: Saga. Gain 1 Glory for each Viking die lost in this round's battle. If you lost no Vikings, gain a Favor token. You may not gain a Favor token if you lost Vikings.
  • Ragnhild: Training. You may exchange any Viking die in this battle for another die from the supply; immediately roll the new die and apply the result. You may not apply the result of the die you returned. You may not exchange your Leader die. You do not receive a sacrifice token for a die you return to the supply.
  • Svanhild: Leadership. Choose a Swordsman die in this battle and change its result as you choose. If there are no Swordsman dice in this battle, the effect does not apply.
  • Tyra: Choosing the fallen. Gain 1 sacrifice token of your choice from the supply. You receive it in addition to the tokens you get for losing dice in this battle.
  • Ullr: Berserker's cry. In this battle, add 1 Berserker die from the supply and roll it immediately. The die returns to your personal supply if the berserker survives the battle. If it falls in battle, you gain a sacrifice token.
  • Hemming: Rune carving. Apply the effect of 1 rune lying face up in the supply, or gain 1 Wood from the supply. Choose and apply the effect.

Setup

Before playing with The Dark Mountains expansion, set up the game by the base rules, following them exactly unless this section says otherwise. If you play with both expansions, Valhalla and The Dark Mountains, follow the setup instructions of both expansions. Step 1 of each rulebook asks you to shuffle the expansion's elements into the base game's elements; do this step once, for both expansions together.

Elements of The Dark Mountains are marked with the Dark Mountains icon. Remove all cards marked with the Valhalla icon if you are not playing with the Valhalla expansion.

  1. Before playing the expansion for the first time, shuffle the new Rune, Fate, troll, draugr, monster and tent cards in with the components of the base game.
  2. Place the Beggar Market Stall on one of the market spaces of the main game board. The Beggar Market Stall is used in every game, in addition to the market stalls added according to the number of players. It is used to display and improve the "Beg" action of the base game. It is always available to all players.
  3. Place the archer dice beside the board, together with the other Viking dice.
  4. Place the Dark Mountains board beside the main board.
  5. Shuffle the Bergrisar cards and the Land Journey cards separately, and place the decks face down on their marked spaces on the Dark Mountains board. Fill the empty spaces during the Round Setup phase of each round. Bergrisar cards are placed face up; Land Journey cards are placed face down.
  6. When playing with 4–5 players, place the extended tent board beneath the Dark Mountains board. When playing with fewer players, ignore this step.
  7. When playing with 5 players, place the additional Leader's military ship beside the board, together with the other military ships, and use 3 military tents and 3 trade tents during setup. When playing with fewer players, ignore this step.

Step 2 continues on page 5 of the rulebook. On this new stall any number of workers may be placed. When you place a worker here, take 1 Blame token and 1 Any Resource (your choice) from the supply. When playing with 2–3 players, place the Beggar Market Stall on the space intended for 4 players. When playing with 4–5 players, place the Beggar Market Stall on an empty space of the extended market board.

Start the game!

Gameplay

New Symbols and Rules

The new symbol means "Any Resource": food, wood or coins. The number in the middle of the symbol is how many resources you may gain or must spend. You may use resources of one kind or several kinds, in any combination.

When playing with The Dark Mountains expansion, any card or effect that refers to "expedition cards" applies both to the base expedition cards and to the new land expedition cards (for example, the Seer's house).

Finally, when playing with 5 players, the player who activates the workers' huts fifth pays 1 coin to gain an extra worker. This is not shown on the board, so you will have to remember this rule.

Remember, these locations gain new effects that are not shown on the board!

Archer Dice

Archers are a new, powerful type of Viking warrior, since archer dice have only 1 blank face. They are also natural hunters: each archer has a 50% chance to gain double food when hunting. The deer symbol means that this hit brings 2 Food when rolled at the Hunting Grounds. Mostly, archer dice are gained by defeating Bergrisar. The symbol of any Viking die also applies to archer dice.

Archer dice have the following faces:

FaceResult
3 facesBow with deer (2 Food when rolled on the Hunting Grounds)
2 facesPlain bow hit
1 faceBlank

Bergrisar

Bergrisar are mountain giants with a nasty habit of taking Vikings prisoner. Nothing is crueler to a proud Viking than being trapped in a smelly giant's cave, for when confined they cannot fight, and so they will never reach Valhalla!

Combat with Bergrisar takes place after combat with Draugr and before combat with Monsters. Empty Bergrisar and Land Journey spaces are filled during Round Setup. Bergrisar cards are placed face up in their spaces, and Land Journey cards are placed face down. A Bergrisar card that is not defeated is not discarded at the end of the round, and no reward is added to it. Cards remain until the Bergrisar are defeated.

You may start a fight with a Bergrisar in the same way as with a Monster from the base game of Champions of Midgard: place a worker on the Bergrisar's space and start the battle in the battle phase. When you meet a Monster, you must first play an expedition card; when you meet a Bergrisar, you must play a Land Journey card.

In the phase of sending Vikings on expeditions, place the dice of the Vikings you want to send to fight the Bergrisar on that Bergrisar's card. When it is time to fight, first flip over the Land Journey card for that space and apply its effect.

Land Journey cards often force you to spend coins. This is reminded by the coin symbol printed on the Dark Mountains board beside the Land Journey spaces. Take coins for resolving Land Journey cards from your personal supply; you do not need to give them up in advance. Some Land Journey card effects are mandatory, while others offer the player a choice. The full description of all Land Journey card effects is on page 10. Defeating a Bergrisar is the main way to gain archer dice.

Example of Combat with a Bergrisar

In the placement phase, Gilvi places a worker on a Bergrisar's space, preparing to fight it.

In the sending phase, he places 4 Viking dice on the Bergrisar card.

When it is time to fight, he flips over the Land Journey card and finds that his warriors have been caught in a blizzard. He must pay 1 coin for each of his Viking dice, and lose the ones he does not pay for.

Since Gilvi has only 3 coins, he decides to give all of them and loses 1 die. Now the battle with the enemy can take place. The dice show: 1 shield, a blank face and 2 hits.

Gilvi wins the battle, loses 1 die and receives the reward: 8 Glory and 1 archer die.

Land Journey Cards

  • Thief (2 copies): Lose 1 coin, if possible. If you have no coins, you lose nothing.
  • All Quiet (10 copies): No effect.
  • Avalanche (2 copies): Lose 1 Viking die from those taking part in the journey.
  • Blizzard (2 copies): Pay 1 coin for each Viking taking part in the journey, or lose them. Vikings you did not pay for die of exposure, and their dice return to the supply.
  • Lone Warrior (2 copies): Pay 1 coin to hire 1 Viking of your choice (they join those taking part in the journey).
  • Blocked Path (2 copies): Pay 2 coins (to hire a guide) or end the journey. If you end the journey, return the dice of all Vikings from the journey to your longhouse.
  • Bandits (2 copies): Pay 2 coins, or fight the bandits (attack 1, defense 2). Glory can only be gained after the fight.
  • Lost (2 copies): Pay 1 coin (for a stranger's map), or lose 2 of the Vikings who set out on the journey.

Remove all cards marked with the Valhalla icon if you are not playing with the Valhalla expansion.

New Enemy Cards

  • Seidr Draugr: Vikings are never killed when fighting this enemy, but you gain 1 Blame token at the start of each combat round against the Seidr Draugr.
  • Stone Beast: Hard as stone and merciless to the weak. In each combat round, the Stone Beast kills Vikings whose dice rolled a blank face. You may use rolled shields to prevent these losses.
  • Cultist: The Cultist heals itself by draining the strength of its enemies. At the start of each combat round, the Cultist removes 1 wound previously dealt to it.
  • Marauder: Repulsive creatures pick up whatever is left after shipwrecks, or what belonged to fallen warriors, and hoard these riches in their caves. A Marauder can be defeated with a single hit, but finding its hoard is a harder task. Gain 1 coin for each hit rolled against it in combat.
  • Cave Dweller: The enemy of every traveler, the Cave Dweller hunts those who seek shelter when the elements rage. After defeating one of these monsters, you may discard 1 Blame token and raid its lair, taking food and coins.
  • Troll Lord: The most powerful of the trolls. After defeating it, you may discard 1 Blame token, and then each other player receives 1 Blame token from the supply.
  • Dark Shaman: These sorcerers draw on the power of the underworld and cast spells against which there is no defense. A shield rolled on a die does not block the Dark Shaman's attack.
  • Mist Walker: The most ferocious monster of Midgard. The Mist Walker leaves alive no Viking who dares to strike it.

Remove all cards marked with the Valhalla icon if you are not playing with the Valhalla expansion.

Appendix

I. Viking Leaders

  • Jorunn the Traveler: Jorunn loves to travel, and almost as much to tell of her travels. Each time you reveal an expedition card (land or sea), if it is not an All Quiet card, you immediately gain 2 Glory. But Glory cannot be gained merely by looking at an expedition card, whatever its effect (for example, the effect of the Seer's house or the Expedition rune).
  • Ragnhild the Advisor: Ragnhild is very skilled with a variety of weapons, and demands the same of her warriors. When you activate the Jarl's longhouse, you may choose a swordsman, spearman or axeman die (instead of necessarily taking a swordsman) in addition to the first player token. If you already hold the first player token and activate the Jarl's longhouse, you must pass it to the player on your left.

II. Rune Cards

  • Watchfulness: Look at the top 3 cards of the expedition deck (either sea or land). You may change their order, then return them to the top of the deck.
  • Friendship: When you activate this rune, choose another player. You and that player each discard 1 Blame token. You may not choose yourself, but you may choose a player who has no Blame token.
  • Training: Exchange any 2 of your Viking dice for any 2 Viking dice from the supply.
  • The Hunt: Use when hunting. Gain 1 Glory for each hit rolled. The amount of Glory may exceed the amount of Food collected (for example, if you roll 10 hits, you collect only 6 Food but gain 10 Glory). Archers cannot gain 2 Glory for a single hit during the hunt. They receive the extra Food for the deer face, but this second hit does not count, so it does not bring 2 Glory.
  • Patience: Copy the effect of a face-up rune belonging to another player or lying face up in the supply. The Patience rune always has priority: if you try to copy a rune, your opponent may not use their own rune in response to stop you. You may also use your rune immediately if an opponent decides to use their rune to copy its effect, while that card is still face up.

New Symbols (The Dark Mountains)

  • Dark Mountains expansion: marks elements that belong to The Dark Mountains.
  • Valhalla expansion: marks elements that belong to Valhalla.
  • Archer die symbol: a new Viking die type, part of the "any Viking die" symbol.
  • Any Resource: food, wood or coins; the number in the symbol is the quantity.
