The Centipede

Written rules text (BGG item description):

The Centipede moves three spaces on top of the Hive and must end its turn on another piece which isn't in a stack. The piece which the Centipede finishes on then swaps places with the Centipede's original position.

The one Hive rule must always be upheld; the Hive must not be broken, even whilst swapping the two pieces.

Rules diagram 1 (titled "Centipede"):

  • Centipede moves by the number of spaces equal to the number of its adjacent pieces.
  • It can move on top of the hive.
  • It must end its movement on the ground level.

Diagram 1 illustrations:

  • A Centipede on the ground is shown with green numbered movement paths of one, two and three steps across the board. Orange markers show the number of pieces adjacent to each hex, which sets how far the Centipede moves from that hex.

Rules diagram 2 (titled "Centipede (alternative)"):

  • Moves by 1 space around the hive, OR
  • Swaps its position with an adjacent unstacked piece.
    • The Centipede must be able to slide into the swapped spot.
    • The hive cannot be separated during the swap.
    • The Centipede cannot swap places with another Centipede.

Diagram 2 illustrations:

  • A Centipede on the hive shows an orange arrow to an adjacent empty hex, marking the swap, and green single-step arrows to two other adjacent hexes, marking the one-space move.

Discrepancy Between the Sources

The three versions do not describe the same piece:

  • The written text gives a fixed three-space movement on top of the Hive. The Centipede must end its turn on another piece that is not in a stack, and then swaps places with that piece.
  • Diagram 1 gives movement equal to the number of adjacent pieces, may move on top of the hive, and must end its movement on the ground level. It says nothing about swapping.
  • Diagram 2 gives either a one-space move around the hive or a swap with an adjacent unstacked piece, under the slide and no-separation limits and the restriction against swapping with another Centipede. It says nothing about a three-space move.

The written text, diagram 1 and diagram 2 cannot all be followed as stated. Players should agree which version to use before play; this transcription does not choose between them.
