Can I eat an animal just before breeding to free room for a baby?
Yes, provided you still own two of that type afterwards. With four animals and no room, eating one first leaves three, still a breeding pair, and the freed space takes the baby. With only two animals this fails because one remains and nothing breeds. You cannot breed one type, eat to make room, and then breed another, since all babies appear together.
