Scenario Set-up

This scenario is not a standalone game. You also need the cards and the pieces of the base game.

The game is quick to set up. Instead of building the familiar island, spread out the map of Poland. The map shows the mountains and the towns roughly where they are in reality.

Rule Changes

The game is played according to the usual rules of CATAN – Das Spiel, with the following exceptions.

Settlements and Cities

  • Settlements may only be founded on the round town fields. (BGG description: players may only build cities on the round intersections that denote actual cities.)
  • Whoever builds a road to a town field may build the next road beyond that town field only after founding a settlement on that town field. (BGG description: players can only build streets on pre-printed places, and must build a settlement on the actual cities before placing another street.)

Harbours

  • Instead of the usual harbours, a player gains a harbour advantage simply by building a road on a red road-building field. (BGG description: instead of harbours, some cities let a player trade in at 3:1 or 2:1. The publisher text does not state the trade ratios.)

Victory Point Fields

  • At the start of the game, victory point chips from the Seafarers expansion are placed on the intersections showing a victory point symbol. If you do not have the chips, coins are used instead as a stopgap.
  • Whoever first reaches such an intersection with a road receives the chip, and thereby gains one more victory point.
  • (BGG description: victory points are obtained by building the first road onto a "victory point crossing". These points are indicated by tokens placed there. This applies only with 3 or 4 players.)

Robber

  • (BGG description: the robber starts next to the board.)

Player Counts

  • Three or four players: the rules above apply, including the victory point fields.
  • Two players: the scenario can be played with two players by using the CATAN für Zwei variant from the Traders & Barbarians expansion. (Source A. The variant itself is not transcribed here.)
  • Five or six players: the scenario is also suitable for five and six players. In this case, the victory point fields that carry chips or coins in the three- and four-player game count as normal town fields. Settlements may be built on them and upgraded to cities.

Winning the Game

A player wins the game if it is their turn and they have reached the following number of victory points: (BGG description; the publisher text does not state these thresholds)

  • 3 players: 13 victory points
  • 4 players: 12 victory points
  • 5 or 6 players: 10 victory points
