Changes to Setup

Assemble the Frame

Assemble the frame using pieces from CATAN, CATAN 5–6, and Explorers & Pirates. As with Explorers & Pirates, it is easier to assemble the frame by placing the CATAN frame pieces down onto the Explorers & Pirates frame pieces.

Choose the First Player

Each player rolls the dice. The player with the highest roll is the first player and receives the player 1 marker. The third person to the left of the starting player receives the player 2 marker.

Rules

NOTE: This edition has new paired player rules that replace the special building phase found in previous 5–6 player expansions.

Turn Overview

Explorers & Pirates 5–6 is played over a series of turns, starting with the first player and moving clockwise around the table. A turn consists of five phases, depending upon the scenario, which occur in this order:

Player 1

  1. Production Phase
  2. Action Phase
  3. Movement Phase

Player 2

  1. Action Phase
  2. Movement Phase

Once player 2 has finished their Movement phase, if neither player 1 nor player 2 has won, pass the dice and the player markers to the left. The new player 1 begins their turn with the Production phase.

Rules Changes for Paired Players

Player 1 takes their turn exactly as they would in a game of Explorers & Pirates, including meeting the scenario's "Winning the Game" condition. In this case, the game ends immediately—even before player 2 takes their Action phase.

If player 1 does not win on their turn, then player 2 takes an Action phase and Movement phase with one restriction: Player 2 may not trade with other players.

Paired players

  • 5 players: The third player to the left of the first player is player 2. The first player is player 1.
  • 6 players: The third player to the left of the first player is player 2. The first player is player 1.

(The printed rulebook shows these seating arrangements in diagrams; the diagrams are not reproduced here.)

If player 2 reaches the scenario's "Winning the Game" condition during their part of the paired player turn, they win and the game ends immediately.
