What Kind of Game Is Catalogue?

Guess what your partner likes by looking at catalogs and magazines. If your guess is correct, you get a Love Token. How many Love Tokens can you gather....?

Try it with these catalogs:

  • for couples: travel catalogs, clothing catalogs
  • with children: toy catalogs
  • on your smart phone: image searches, such as World Heritage Sites

Catalogue (The Basic Game Is for Two People)

Can you figure out what your partner wants?

Setup

  1. Get some catalogs or magazines.
  2. Put the Love Tokens and Markers on the table.
  3. Each player takes one set of cards. (One player is the Ranking Player; the other is the Guessing Player.)

Round Procedure

  1. The Ranking Player chooses a page of the catalog and decides on a theme. The Guessing Player randomly places 7 markers on the page's photos (brown side facing up).
  2. The Ranking Player places the cards on the table face down in order, numbered 1 to 7. Then the card ranked number 4 is turned face up as a hint for the Guessing Player.
  3. The Guessing Player tries to guess the Ranking Player's number 1 choice. The Guessing Player can ask questions, but whether to answer or not is up to the Ranking Player. The Guessing Player plays the card from his hand which has the symbol he thinks the Ranking Player chose for number 1.
  4. The Ranking Player shouts, "Catalogue!" and the Guessing Player points to the marker which they think is number 1.
  5. Check the answer: the Ranking Player opens the card with the same symbol as the one the Guessing Player showed. If it was number 1, the guess is correct.
  6. If the Guessing Player guessed correctly, he gets a Love Token. If not, he gets nothing.
  7. The Guessing Player continues to guess the 2nd and 3rd choices, and so on. After guessing the 6th choice, the game is over. The Ranking Player reveals his number 1 choice card, and players who guessed correctly can get a Love Token.
  8. Any time a card is revealed, flip the corresponding Marker too. The Marker which corresponds to rank 4 should be flipped to the green side.
  9. When the Ranking Player has only one card left, the game is finished. The highest score is 5 points. The last card is obvious, so you don't get any points for it.

Ending the Game and Switching Roles

Now the Guessing Player and Ranking Player switch roles. The total number of Love Tokens collected becomes the couple's score.

Synchro-logue (What Is Our Compatibility Today?)

  1. Set the game up according to rules 1 and 2 from the regular Catalogue game. Then both players place their ranking cards face down on the table. Next, let's check the answers.
  2. Both players begin flipping their cards over at the same time, starting with the 1st ranked card. If both players chose the same item, they get one Love Token.
  3. When both players have flipped all of the cards, the game is over. The number of Love Tokens earned is today's compatibility rating.

Party-logue (for 3 or More People)

Let's guess one Ranking Player's choices.

*Choose the theme and place the markers just like in the original Catalogue game rules.

  1. The Ranking Player places the cards on the table face down in order. Then the card ranked number 4 is turned face up as a hint for the Guessing Players. The Guessing Players secretly decide which card they think the number 1 choice is.
  2. The Ranking Player shouts, "Catalogue!" and the Guessing Players all point to the marker which they think is number 1.
  3. The Ranking Player reveals his number 1 choice card. Players who guessed correctly can get a Love Token.
  4. The Guessing Players continue to guess the next choices. After guessing the 6th choice, the game is over.

Scoring: if the Guessing Player guessed correctly, he gets a Love Token. If not, he gets nothing.

Notes

  • You can high five each time you get a Love Token!
