Game 1: Mouse picnic
Aim of the game
Catching mice: The cat tries to catch as many mice as possible. The mice try not to be caught.
Preparation
Cat prepares cup and dice: The oldest player plays the cat in the first round. He takes the wooden cup and the colour dice.
- Each player chooses a mouse.
- If there are 7 players, the cat player does not select a mouse.
Mice sit in the middle: All players except the cat put their mice on the table, so that their noses are touching. The players hold their mice at the end of its tails. The dice with dots and the remaining mice stay in the game box.
Signal colour is defined: The signal colour for the cat to attack now has to be chosen.
- If there are 6 or less players, the colour of the cat player's mouse is the signal colour.
- If there are 7 players, the cat player defines the colour by rolling the dice.
How to play
Cat rolls the dice: The cat player rolls the dice in the cup, turns the cup on the table and lift sit so that everybody can see the colour rolled.
Dice = signal colour? If the dice shows the signal colour:
- Cat tries to catch mice: the cat player turns the cup on the table trying to catch the mice sitting there.
- The mouse players pull their mice away as quickly as possible.
No mice caught? Cat plays another round: The cat didn't catch any mice? The cat player takes up the cup and rolls the dice again. The mouse players put their mice on the table as before.
Mouse caught? New cat, new signal colour is defined: Has the cat caught a mouse? The mouse player who has just been caught receives the wooden cup and the coloured dice. He is the cat player for the next round. All mouse players put their mice on the table as before.
Attention: the signal colour changes automatically! Important: If there are 7 players, the new cat player gives his mouse to the previous cat player. Then he rolls the dice to define the new signal colour.
- Has the cat caught more than one mouse? The cat player can then decide which of those mouse players caught will be the next cat player.
Dice = not the signal colour? Cat rolls again: If the dice shows a different colour, then the mice have to sit quietly in the middle. The cat player rolls the dice again.
Mouse pulled away? New cat: Attention: If a player pulls his mouse out anyway, he becomes the new cat player immediately.
End of the game
The game ends when cat and mice are too tired to go on chasing each other. The most important thing is that everybody has fun!
Variations for older children
Play in turns, clockwise, and agree on how many rounds you want to play. Each player can play the cat for five successive rounds. For each mouse caught he scores a point. Who has the highest score in the end?
Game 2: Watch out, mouse!
Aim of the game
Cat catches mouse of the colour rolled: The cat player has to catch the mouse whose colour he rolls.
Preparation
As for game idea 1. No signal colour is defined.
How to play
The game starts just like game idea 1. However, the tasks (and thus the results) are different.
Does the dice show the colour of a mouse sitting in the middle? This means:
Failed? Cat plays another round. Wrong mouse pulled away?
- Did the cat player catch the mouse in the colour rolled? He takes the cup again, puts the dice in it and rolls again.
- Has a mouse player pulled his mouse away even though it was not the colour rolled? He becomes the new cat player immediately. If more than one player has pulled his mouse away, the cat player chooses one of them.
Successful? New cat
- Has the cat player caught the mouse of the same colour as the colour rolled? This mouse player receives the wooden cup and the colour dice. He is the new cat player.
- Did the cat player catch other mice as well? Nothing happens to them; they can stay in the middle for the next round. Even if a player pulls his mouse away when it was not the colour rolled, he is lucky this time: nothing happens to him.
Signal colour = corresponding mouse not in the game? Mice remain in place
Does the dice show the colour of a mouse which is not in the middle? All mice have to sit quietly.
Mouse pulled away? New cat
If a player pulls out his mouse, he becomes the new cat player immediately. If several players have pulled their mice away, then the cat player chooses one of them.
End of the game
The game ends when cat and mice are too tired to go on chasing each other.
Variation for older children
Use the point dice. The signal number for each round is defined by rolling the dice. Each mouse is given a number. If the dice shows the signal number, the cat player turns the cup on the table, trying to catch the corresponding mouse sitting there. The mouse player tries to pull his mouse away by its tail as quickly as possible.
