Table of Contents
Components
- 6 snail figures
- 6 snail tokens
- 4 colored dice
- 20 shell tokens
- 1 board
- 1 rulebook
Objective
Players must use the results of the dice to advance the snail figures of the other players, so that their own snail ends up as far behind as possible at the end of the race.
Ready, Set...
-
The board is placed in the center of the table.
-
The 6 snail figures are placed on the starting stone with the multicolored flags, whatever the number of players.
-
Each player receives, at random, their snail token(s), keeping them hidden from the other players:
- 2/3 players: 2 tokens for each player
- 4/5/6 players: 1 token for each player
If there are tokens left over, they are returned to the box, keeping them hidden.
-
The shell tokens are left to one side of the board.
-
The player who arrived last will be the starting player and takes the four colored dice. They take the first turn of the race.
The Race Begins
Players take turns in clockwise order.
On their turn, each player performs the following actions:
- The player rolls the 4 dice simultaneously, and then
- Advances the snails.
Advance the Snails
The player chooses one of the dice they have rolled and, according to the color obtained in the roll, advances one space only one snail that meets one of the following conditions:
- The snail is the color of the result of the die.
- The snail is on a space of the color of the result of the die.
After advancing the snail that met the above conditions, the player hands the die used to the next player (the one to their left) and proceeds to do the same with another die until they have resolved all 4 dice they rolled.
Example 1: With a red result, the player can choose to advance the red snail to the white space, or a snail that is on a red space to the green space.
In the second illustration: the player can advance the red snail (1) from the yellow space, or the green one (2) or the yellow one (3) that are on a red space.
Notes:
- From the starting stone with the multicolored flags, a snail can be advanced using any color.
- It is mandatory to use all the dice of a roll.
Example 2: Pablo, Roberto and Marta are playing a game. It is Marta's turn. Her snails are the white one and the purple one, but she does not know which are Pablo's and Roberto's. Marta rolls the dice and obtains the following result: green, blue, purple, red.
She then decides to use the dice in the following order:
- PURPLE: She uses the purple die to advance the yellow snail from the purple space to the blue space. Another option would be to use the die to advance the purple snail, but it is one of her snails and she prefers that it not advance. She passes the die to Roberto, who is the next player.
- BLUE: She uses the blue die to advance the yellow snail (which is now on the blue space) to the red space. She passes the die to Roberto.
- RED: She uses the red die to advance the green snail from the red space to the green space. She passes the die to Roberto.
- GREEN: She uses the green die to advance the green snail from the green space to the yellow space. In this case it is the only option she has. She passes the die to Roberto.
The final position of the snails is shown in the illustration.
End of the Race
The race ends when, at the end of a turn, one or more snails have reached the final stone.
Then the players show their snail tokens and receive as many shell tokens as the number indicated by the board space where their snail(s) are located.
Note: On the last turn of the race, when a snail has already reached the final stone space, if no snail can advance with the result of a die because that snail is on the finish space and there is no snail on another space of that color, that result is ignored.
Example 3: Pablo, Roberto and Marta have finished the race. Roberto ended his turn with the blue snail on the finish space. The three players show their hidden snail tokens. Each player receives, for each of their snails, the number of shells indicated by the space where it is located. Marta's snails are the Purple one (she receives 3 shells) and the white one (she receives 1 shell); in total she gets 4 shells. Pablo receives 3 shells: 1 for the blue one and 2 for the red one. And Roberto also receives 4 shells: 2 for each of his snails, the yellow one and the green one.
Winner
The game consists of two races. After finishing the first race, the players keep in front of them the shell tokens they have obtained and prepare the next race in the same way. The players will again receive their snail token(s) at random, so it is possible that they repeat a color in both races. In the second race, the starting player will be the one who was left holding the dice at the end of the first.
The player who has obtained the greatest number of shell tokens at the end of the second race will be the winner of the Snail Formula.
In case of a tie, the winner will be the player who finished the second race with the most-delayed snail. If the tie remains, they will share the victory.
