The Cards
There are 2 kinds of cards:
- Treasure cards: Back, Jewels, Pirate, Captain Flint.
- Bag cards: Back, Jewels, Color.
Set-Up
-
Put the disk "Parche, the Parrot" in the middle of the table.
-
Set up the deck of treasure cards:
- Take the treasure cards and separate the Captain Flint card.
- Shuffle the treasure cards and separate 25 of these.
- Shuffle the Captain Flint card with these 25 cards and put them face down on the table.
- Put on top of them the remaining treasure cards.
- Take the entire deck of treasure cards and place them inside the treasure chest face down.
-
Shuffle the bag cards and deal 4 to each player. Return the rest of bag cards to the box without looking at them; they will not be used during the game.
Note: If there are only two different types among the 4 bag cards received by a player (e.g. 3 red bags and 1 bag of coins, or 2 bags of diamonds and 2 bags of pearls), the player shows them and the bag cards are dealt again to all players until they have bag cards of at least three different types.
-
The player with more rings and earrings will be the starting player and will take the treasure chest.
The Game
Starting with the first player, each player will complete his turn and afterwards the player on his left will start his turn (clockwise around the table).
During his turn, the player will take the following actions in this order:
First Treasure Card
The player who has the Chest takes the upper Chest treasure card and puts it in the center of the table face up around the disk "Parche, the Parrot", and next to the other treasure cards that might have been left over from previous turns. The card from the Chest should be drawn towards other players (see chart).
If the card drawn by the player from the treasure chest has a symbol in the upper right corner, you must do the following depending on the symbol:
-
Chest: Place the card in the middle of the table, as described before, and then draw an additional card from the Chest. Repeat this action until the card revealed do not have the chest symbol.
-
Hooks: Nothing happens.
-
Hat: If there are 3 hats on the table including this card, players must catch "Parche". The first player that puts his hand on the disk "Parche" will take all cards from the center of the table that have the hat symbol. Then that player places the collected cards face down next to him.
If when it does not correspond one or more players put their hands wrongly on "Parche", each one of them must discard 2 treasure cards from the ones obtained by the player so far, removing them from the game. The player can choose which ones to discard. In case a player does not have 2 treasure cards to discard, he will discard one bag card from his hand. In case this is not possible either, he will not receive any penalty.
-
Pirate card: If you draw a pirate card, all cards with that kind of gem are removed from the center of the table. Nobody wins that booty, removing these cards from the game.
Note: To catch "Parche", players must have their hands in contact with the table in front of them. It is forbidden to keep high the hand or to put them on the table next to "Parche" disk.
After the player takes the card, he decides to use one of his bag cards or not:
The player shows the bag card he wants to play to the other players and take from the center of the table all cards with the same characteristic than the card just shown (color or figure). That player places next to him face down the treasure cards picked up. The bag card played is removed from the game, and the turn ends immediately, passing the Chest to the player on the left.
If the player hasn't used a bag card, he must continue the turn by drawing the second treasure card.
Second Treasure Card
You must do exactly the same as in the previous action, except if you take a card with a hooks symbol:
- Hooks: Player's turn ends immediately, passing the Chest to the player on his left.
As in the previous case, after drawing the treasure card, the player can use one of his bag cards. If not, the player's turn ends immediately; passing the Chest to the player on his left.
Example: Paul is going to play his turn and takes the first card from the Chest and puts it in the center of the table. As it is the first card of the turn, the hooks symbol has no effect. Paul decides not to take a second card, but prefers to use one of his bag cards (red). Paul shows the bag card to the other players, returns it to the box, and he takes the treasure cards of the red pearl and the three red coins.
End of the Game
The game ends when one of these two events happens:
- Immediately, as soon as appears the treasure card of the Captain Flint ghost who chases away the rascals who are dividing their treasure up.
- When all players run out of bag cards in their hands.
Winner
After the game ends, each player counts the points from the treasure cards he obtained. The value of each card is the number of gems drawn on it (1 point, 2 points, 3 points).
The player with more points is the winner. In case of a tie the player who has less treasure cards will be the winner. If the tie remains, they share the victory.
For Veteran Pirates
If after a few games you want to increase Captain Flint difficulty you can apply changes below:
At Any Time in the Game
Hooks / Hat: If there are 3 hats or 3 hooks at any time at the table, players must catch "Parche" immediately. The first player to put his hand on the disk "Parche" will take all cards from the center of the table that have the hat or hooks symbol, depending on the sign which has caused the need to catch "Parche". That player keeps the cards obtained at his side, face down.
Second Treasure Card
Hooks / Hat: If the first treasure card drawn by the player in his turn has the hooks symbol and the second treasure card has the hat symbol (or vice versa), the player's turn ends immediately, passing the Chest to the player on his left. Remember that the cards with the chest symbol are not taken into account as 1st or 2nd drawn cards.
Example: Paul draws the first treasure card and appears a green pearl with chest. He draws another card and appears one of 2 pearls with hooks. Paul has a bag card of pearls but decides that he wants more than three pearls. So he risks drawing the 2nd treasure card. He draws the treasure card and appears a yellow pearl card with chest, so he must draw another card again. Now he draws a 2 red rings card with Hat. As the 1st card has hooks (the card with chest does not count as 1st card) and the 2nd card has a hat (the card with chest does not count as 2nd card), Paul ends his turn immediately and passes the Chest to the player on his left.
