  • 80 Splat Tokens
  • 8 Player Mats

The Objective

Cafe Chaos is a game for 3-8 players! Pick up and throw funny food combos at your opponents while avoiding splat points. When any player reaches 10 splat points, the fight is over.

The player with the LOWEST score is the winner! Also, the objective of the game is to still have friends at the end of the game.

Setup

  1. Get Stuff:

    • Pick a Character to play!
    • Take their Character Action card.
    • Give each player 3 Basic Actions: (Throw x1, Grab x1, Duck x1).
    • Grab any Target card [and place it on] a Player Mat.

Note: the printed step reads "Grab any Target card a Player Mat." The words in square brackets are added for readability.

Put all unused Characters, Character Actions, Basic Actions, & Target Cards back in the box.

  2. Shuffle Stuff: Shuffle the Events (green back) together into an EVENT DECK. Keep this off to the side for now. Shuffle the rest of the cards (Foods, Toppings, Conditions, Bonus Actions) into a MAIN DECK in the center of the table.

  3. Deal Stuff: From the main DECK, deal out:

    • 5 cards face-up to the table (this is called the FLOOR)
    • 2 cards to each player's hand
    • 3 face-up cards in discard pile (This is called the TRASH)

The player who ate last will begin. Give this player the Starting Player Marker, and the Event Deck. You're ready to food fight!

Game Basics

The food fight is played in ROUNDS until there is a winner. During every ROUND, each player will play 3 ACTIONS on their mat. Everyone will resolve ACTION #1 in turn order before revealing ACTION #2. Repeat for ACTION #3.

Basic Actions

Actions in this game are your "moves". You start with 3 Basic actions and 1 special Character action. You can never lose, trade or discard actions... Unless specified - actions come back to you each round. The Basic actions help you throw food, avoid thrown food, and get more food.

Throw

This is your main attack with food. You can throw a single card or make a combo (see page 9). You don't need to declare what you are throwing until it's your turn to act. You must attack (discard) at least 1 Food/Topping card from your hand even if your target avoids the attack. If you hit, your target takes 1 or more splat points!

Duck

This is your main defense against thrown food. You will not take any action when it's your turn to do something, but you are safe from ALL thrown food attacks during this "turn" (set of actions).

Grab

This is your main way to get more food (ammo). When you grab, you select any 1 card from the FLOOR, and then immediately replace it with a face-up card from the DECK. If you choose to grab a Food card, you can grab a second food card, if available.

Playing the Game

Let's throw some food!

Start of Round

New starting player - pass the Starting Player Marker clockwise (except round 1).

Pick Targets

In turn order, beginning with the starting player and proceeding clockwise, each player points their Target card at a player to be their target for this round. Each round you can choose a new target!

1. Action!

Everyone chooses 3 actions (from all their available actions) to play this round, in the exact order you want to play them from left to right. Lay them out on your player mat face down like so:

Action #1, Action #2, Action #3.

Tip: Keep in mind which card you want to play in which order. No ammo? Grab first! Heavily targeted? Maybe Duck THEN Grab - depends on the situation and your opponents.

2. Events!

Something unexpected happens! (skip for round 1). The starting player flips the top Event card and follows the directions before continuing the food fight (see Events, page 17).

3. Food Fight!

a) Action: Every player at the same time flips over their leftmost hidden card only. Then, in clockwise order, starting player first, each player follows the instructions on that card.

b) Get Splattered: Players gain or remove splat points as directed by the cards. Place splat tokens on your mat to cover the letters "c-a-f-e-c-h-a-o-s-!"

c) Rinse & Repeat: Everyone repeats a&b for their other two Action cards.

4. Check Victory!

If nobody has reached 10 in Splat points, start a new round!

Ending the Game

AT THE END OF A ROUND if anyone has reached 10 or more splat points, the game is over! The winner is the player (or players) with the lowest amount of splat points. Ties are okay, although if you want to have a clear victor, by all means, settle it with another food fight!

How to Serve Up a Delicious Combo!

Combo values when thrown together (Food = yellow, Topping = pink, Condition = blue):

  • Food = +1 splat point
  • Topping = +1 splat point
  • Food + Topping = +2 splat points
  • Topping + Topping = +2 splat points
  • Condition + Food = +3 splat points
  • Condition + Topping = +3 splat points
  • Condition + Food + Topping = +4 splat points, and -2 (heal 2)
  • Condition + Topping + Topping = +4 splat points, and -2 (heal 2)

3 card combos heal you! (see below)

Read 'em Like So

Condition + Food + Topping (Topping style - ignore if thrown solo).

Epic Combo AND Mega Heal

WHENEVER YOU PLAY 3 CARDS TOGETHER in one attack AND IT HITS, you have an epic moment. Shout "CAFE CHAOS!" because someone is probably recording you play.

In addition to epic damage, this combo ALSO heals you for 2, because you're awesome and everyone's talking about it.

Key Extra Rules

What the? There's more rules? Yes, a couple of important ones:

Hand Limit

There is none. Go ahead and try and hold it all.

9 Point Rule

Sometimes enough is enough! When you are at 9 points you are immune from any damage to yourself or an event that would knock you out.

ONLY splat points (pink) and splash damage (blue) points gained by another player's action will hit you.

Floor Full

The FLOOR starts with 5 cards. If a card is taken and the FLOOR has fewer than 5 cards, the card is immediately replaced with a new one from the deck by the player who snatched it. If the FLOOR has 5 cards or more, do not replace taken card.

Mix It Up

Want to add unused character actions into the deck? You can! Just try to keep a balanced meal - use an equal # of actions, toppings and conditions in the deck, then add foods - 4x the number of one of the other ingredients. Yum!

Tip: Be aware that most action cards are stronger when played early in clockwise rotation. The starting player targets first with less information, but has the first strike!

Actions Reference

Base game. Some actions listed may be found in card packs sold separately.

Cannonball

(Character Action, draw/splash damage)

From FLOOR, take 1 (any card) and give your target 1 Food. Then, splash 1 left/right of target.

Cannonball gets you any card from the FLOOR and you choose a FLOOR Food to go to your target, if one is available. If they received a Food, players on their left and right then take 1 point of splash damage! This may include YOU if you are next to your target. This splash damage is unblockable.

Catch

(Bonus Action, variable)

No splat points from Food. Take all (Food or Topping) from attacks.

No action on your turn, but you take no splat damage from 'attacks with Food' and collect all Foods and Toppings used. Can Catch from multiple attackers. Do not collect Condition cards.

Cheat

(Bonus Action, variable)

Duplicate your last Action. (This cannot be played as Action 1).

If played as first Action, Cheat has no effect. Cheat will only duplicate the last Action played, not cards used in that Action and not any boosts on that previous Action.

Cheer

(Character Action, draw/heal)

CHOOSE: Draw +1 (Food or Topping) or heal 1. Someone else you choose gains the exact same bonus.

You and someone you choose gain the same bonus. If you choose heal but they cannot heal, they don't benefit. May choose ANY player to share Cheer.

Duck

(Basic Action, defense)

Avoid thrown food.

Duck works against thrown food specifically (Throw, Blast, Counterstrike, etc.) but doesn't block all attacks with Food (Lob and Swing for example do hit). Duck does not work against any attacks without Food (Shove, Mope, Belch, etc.) or protect against splash damage. Duck protects against Caricature.

Fetch

(Character Action, draw)

Give 1 card (Food, Topping, or Condition) to your target to take top 2 (Food or Topping) from the TRASH.

You may not give your target an Action card. If you do not have a Food, Topping or Condition card to give, you may still take the rest of the action. You may only take Foods and Toppings in the TRASH (skipping other cards). If there are not 2 qualifying cards in TRASH, take what you can.

Grab

(Basic Action, draw)

Take 1 card from FLOOR. (May take 2 Food.)

Take 1 card from FLOOR, and immediately replace that card if the FLOOR is below 5 cards. If you chose a Food card, you may take a second Food card (and only a Food card).

Hide

(Bonus Action, draw/self-damage)

All actions against you fail. Draw +2 (any card) but +1 splat point.

Hide makes any Action card against you fail, with or without Food. This includes cards like Belch used against all, and Smash or Outsmart, redirecting an attack at you. The only exception is splash damage after the main card action (such as from Lob, Prank, Cannonball) which can touch you.

Lob

(Bonus Action, attack/splash damage)

Attack with Food. Also splatters left/right (not on you) for splash damage.

Lob is an attack with food that can be added to for combos and hits ducking targets. It also splatters if successful as splash damage (1 point left and right of target) which triggers IF main attack hits. You are immune to splash damage caused by you. Lob against Spin is a unique case - see Spin for more details.

Mope

(Character Action, attack)

Attack without Food (+1 splat point). (Only works if you have as many or more splat points than your target.)

No cards are required to play in an attack without Food. You must have an equal or greater amount of splat points than your target (both of you can be at zero) at time of resolving for Mope to work, otherwise this action has no effect this round.

Outsmart

(Character Action, defense)

All attacks against you change to your target. (Exception: splash damage.)

Outsmart redirects all actions with or without Food (Stalk, Taunt, Hallucinate, etc). A player can hit themselves this way. Splash damage (Spin, Smash) and food splatters are not redirected by Outsmart.

Panic

(Character Action, draw/defense)

Draw 1 (Food or Topping). If attacked by Food, may drop a (any card) to FLOOR to avoid attack.

The card draw occurs once when it is your turn to act (You might be attacked by Food before then). The defense portion of Panic can happen multiple times, discarding a card each time. Dropped cards are still added to the FLOOR above the normal limit of 5. Does not block splash damage.

Shove

(Character Action, attack)

Attack without Food. Counts all (any card) in their hand and gains +1 splat point for each. (Max 3)

Shove damages your target for throwable cards they are holding (1 point each for Foods, Toppings and Conditions, max 3). These cards are not discarded. If Shove targets a player without a throwable card, then this action has no effect this round. Shove can hit Ducking, Catching, or other players blocking food attacks.

Smash

(Bonus Action, defense)

All Food attacks splash at your target - may add (any card) for combos.

Smash redirects any attack with Food at you to your target and allows you to add a combo (may not add more cards to combo than usual). Smash is considered splash damage. This is not an attack with Food (Snitch would affect the original attack).

Spin

(Character Action, defense)

All Food attacks splash back at your attacker.

Spin redirects all attacks with Food at you back to the attacker. Does not stop attacks without Food (Tackle, Shove, Stalk, etc.) Spun food counts as splash damage and cannot be blocked. Lob attacks against you splatter 1 splat point left/right, then deflect back, splattering again. You may be affected by the splash.

Sprint

(Bonus Action, draw)

Draw +1 (any card) and take +1 (any card) from FLOOR.

The first card is drawn from the DECK, the second card is taken from the FLOOR. Immediately replace the FLOOR card if the FLOOR is below 5 cards.

Stalk

(Character Action, draw/retargeting)

Take 1 throwable card randomly from target. If they are NOT targeting you, you may change their target.

The card you take is random but cannot be an Action card - your target should select all throwables and offer you to pick one. If you are not targeted by this player, you may then change their target - you cannot change a target to target themself.

Swing

(Character Action, attack)

Attack with Food - any 1 (any card) from the FLOOR by itself.

Attack with Food - not eligible for making a combo, but does not require a card from your hand. This may allow a Condition card to be used by itself. If no Food, Topping, or Condition cards are on the FLOOR, this attack fails. Swing hits ducking targets.

Tackle

(Bonus Action, attack)

Target gains 1 splat point and drops 1 (Food, Topping, or Condition) to FLOOR.

The splat point happens even if there is no card to drop. Dropped cards are still added to the FLOOR above the normal limit of 5.

Throw

(Bonus Action, attack)

Attack with Food.

This action is described on page 6 in detail. You can decide to not make full combos if you know your target is ducking and this will miss, but if you are holding at least one Food or Topping, one must be played. If you have no throwable cards when it is your turn to act, this throw action has no effect.

Actions Reference: Animator Pack

Printed in the rulebook under the heading "Actions Reference" with an "Animator Pack" label. These actions come from a card pack sold separately.

Ari Attack

(Character Action, attack)

Attack without Food. Reveal 1 (any card) from DECK. If Food, 1 splat point to any target. If not, keep the card.

You may choose ANY player for this attack. If you reveal a Food card, Ari attacks for 1 splat point, and you discard the Food. If you reveal a Topping, Condition or Action, Ari misses, but you keep the card.

Bewitched

(Character Action, defense/boost)

This round: Immune to (Condition) damage and +2 to your next attack with Food - it's "Bewitched"!

When flipped, immediate immunity from Condition card damage for the rest of this round, not just during this action. Your next attack with Food (this round ONLY) has an extra Condition "Bewitched" (+2 to food attack). This does not count as a card played for combos but can stack with a Condition on a combo.

Blast

(Character Action, attack)

Attack with food (throw) any number of single throwable cards. Each subsequent throw must be to an adjacent target.

Blast is multiple attacks with Food - each single card counts as a throw and is not eligible for combos. The first attack must be at your target, and then further attacks are made to an adjacent target from the last blast. You may choose to stop at any time, even if still holding Food/Toppings.

Caricature

(Bonus Action, attack)

Attack without Food. Gain splat points to target for amount your target has. They gain only up to 9 total. Can be ducked.

Attack without Food: Caricature adds splat damage equal to what your target already has (this can be zero). NOTE: target will not gain more than 9 total. (Example, if your target has 6 splat points, you will only add 3 with Caricature). This attack can be ducked for no damage.

Counterstrike

(Character Action, defense)

When attacked with Food, you may show and discard a matching card to splash at your target.

No action on your turn unless an attack with Food targets you. After being hit, you can then counter for 2 splat points by playing any matching card used in the attack. This counter is splash damage and is unblockable.

Ctrl+Alt+Del

(Character Action, draw)

Discard any # of (throwable card) from your hand, and draw same # from DECK + 1.

You may not discard Basic actions (Grab, Throw, Duck) with this action, but Character and Bonus actions as well as any throwable cards qualify. Draw the same number of discarded cards +1 from the DECK.

Hallucinate

(Character Action, hand swap)

Choose any two players (can be yourself). Those players swap hands (except Basic/Character Actions).

The two players separate all Basic and Character actions in hand, and exchange hands. This does not need to be an equal exchange, (one player may have no cards in which case they gain the other player's cards and give nothing in return). Outsmart changes the swap target to their own if selected, and Hide prevents being selected for the swap.

Maagic Trick

(Character Action, draw)

Randomly take +1 (throwable card) from target and draw 2 (any card) from DECK. Give your target (any card) from your hand.

The card you take is random but cannot be an action card - your target should select all throwables and offer you to pick one. You then gain 2 cards from the DECK and must give your target any card you choose from your entire hand (except Basic actions).

Mishap

(Character Action, attack)

Attack without Food. Reveal 1 card from DECK. Food = target gains 1 splat point. Topping = you gain 1 splat point. Condition = target gains 2 splat points and you gain 1 splat point. Action card = no effect.

Attack without Food. If the card revealed is a Food, your target gains 1 splat point. If it is a Topping, YOU gain 1 splat point. A Condition is 2 splat points for your target, and 1 for YOU, and an action card revealed is no effect. The revealed card is then discarded.

Prank

(Bonus Action, attack)

Target attacks and hits themselves with 1 of their Food if able. If so, splatters left & right (not on you) for 1 splash damage.

Attack without Food. Your target uses one of their own Food or Topping cards to hit themselves, which deals a splat point and discards the card. THEN, if successful, a splatter occurs for 1 splat point left and right. You are immune to this splash damage, caused by you.

Vengeance

(Character Action, retargeting/attack)

Change target (optional) and attack with Food (throw) a single Food. If your target is targeting you, add 1 splat point.

First, you may optionally change your target. Then, attack with Food with a single card - counts as a throw and is not eligible for making a combo. If your target is targeting you, add 1 splat point to the attack with Food damage.

Actions Reference: Junk Food Pack

Printed in the rulebook under the heading "Actions Reference" with a "Junk Food Pack" label. These actions come from a card pack sold separately.

Belch

(Bonus Action, attack)

CHOOSE: Target player gains 1 splat point OR Discard 1 Condition and all but you gain 1 splat point.

Attack without Food. Discarding a card is optional. Either you can give your target 1 splat point or discard a Condition to affect all players, including your target. Be sure to say what kind of a Belch it is by reading the Condition out loud!

Power Scoop

(Character Action, heal)

Reveal 1-2 (Food or Topping) from hand. Starting with your target and then clockwise, a player may claim these. If they do, you heal 1 splat.

You must reveal at least 1 card, and may not add to the offer after you have revealed. Your target has the option to take the card(s), or pass. If they pass, each player clockwise gets a chance to accept. If anyone accepts the cards, you heal 1 splat.

Sugar Rush

(Character Action, draw)

Draw and reveal up to 5 (any card). If you draw a Condition or an Action card, discard all drawn cards.

Draw 1 to 5 cards and reveal them, stopping at any time. If you stop while only showing Food or Topping cards, you can keep them. If you reveal a Condition or an Action card, all drawn cards are discarded.

Rally

(Bonus Action, draw)

Look at top 3 (any card) from DECK. Keep 2 (any card), discard other.

Choose 2 of the 3 cards drawn to add to your hand, and the remaining card is added to the TRASH.

Yeet

(Bonus Action, attack)

Add 1 Topping to any other attack with Food. This Topping may come from the FLOOR.

No action on your turn. Instead, any other attack with Food in this set of actions (including attacks made before your turn to act), can be modified by Yeet. You may add one topping from your hand or the FLOOR. You may do this to each attack with Food as it is played. This can be done even if there is already a Topping played in the attack.

Actions Reference: Soobway Pack

Printed in the rulebook under the heading "Actions Reference" with a "Soobway Pack" label. These actions come from a card pack sold separately.

Eat

(Character Action, heal)

Discard 1 Food and 1 Topping to heal 2.

This ability is optional. If eating, must discard both a Food and a Topping for the heal benefit.

Confuse

(Bonus Action, retargeting)

Discard any number of (any throwable card). For each discard, redirect a target card.

It is a legal move to change your own Target card this way. You may not redirect someone to target themselves with this action.

Copy

(Bonus Action, variable)

You may take the exact same action as your target.

This action copies both the action and the targeting of the original. It is optional. If copying a defensive or responsive action (Duck, Yeet, etc), the copy action is effective immediately, as needed. Otherwise, resolve in turn order as normal. Copy does not copy cards played, drawn or boosts on the action copied.

Snitch

(Character Action, attack)

On your turn, splat 1 point to all players showing Grab or any attack with food action this turn.

Attack without Food. This is resolved when it is your turn to act. All players showing Grab or any attack with Food as their current action take 1 splat point.

Taunt

(Bonus Action, draw/attack)

Draw 1 (Food or Topping). Attack without Food (+1 splat point). Your target now targets you.

After drawing a card, your target gains 1 splat point from your attack without Food. Your target must target you (not optional).

Event Reference

Base game. Some events listed may be found in card packs sold separately.

Best Day Ever

(one time effect)

Everyone draws a card from the DECK beginning with the starting player and proceeding clockwise. The player with the most splat points draws 2 cards. If players are tied for the most splat points, all tied players get the bonus card.

BFF - Best Friends Forever

(one time effect)

Start with the starting player and proceed clockwise. Everyone MUST switch their Target card to point at a new player.

Cruel & Unusual Punishment

(lasts entire round)

Every successful attack with Food will be punished! That player takes 1 splat point. If an attack is redirected, the original attacker takes the punishment. If an attack fails to hit, the attacker does not take damage for this event. If a player is at 9 points, their successful attack will still cause this 10th splat point to be taken.

Fire Drill

(one time effect)

All players simultaneously discard all throwable cards if any - except 1. Players may keep 1 Food or 1 Topping or 1 Condition. IMPORTANT - Keep all Action cards, these are not discarded during Fire Drill.

Hunger James

(lasts entire round)

After any completed action that gains 1 or more FLOOR cards, that player may take any 1 FLOOR card, replacing all cards taken as normal. This effect can only trigger once per action - for example, a Grab action for 2 Food cards still only results in 1 bonus card.

Janitor Duty

(one time effect)

The player with the most splat points becomes the Janitor. If there is a tie, most splat points closest in clockwise order to the starting player determines the Janitor. The Janitor distributes ALL FLOOR cards to other players (not themselves) in any way they wish - it does not need to be fair. Afterwards, the Janitor heals 1 splat point, if able.

Nice 'Ol Lunch Lady

(one time effect)

Deal out TRASH Food or Topping cards, starting with the starting player and proceeding clockwise. Skip any Condition or Action cards found and leave them in the TRASH. If there are not enough Food/Topping cards, deal out whatever is available.

Mix Up

(one time effect)

Everyone must simultaneously swap all throwable cards (Food, Topping, Conditions) to the LEFT. Keep all Actions - do not pass Action cards. If a player has no throwable cards to pass, then they do not pass anything.

School Nurse

(one time effect)

The player with the most splat points heals 2. If tied, all tied players get the bonus.

Sprinklers

(one time effect)

All players simultaneously gain 1 splat point. If a player would take their 10th splat token this way, they do not take it.

Time Machine

(one time effect)

All players simultaneously adjust the actions on their mat, shifting actions to the left. (Action 1 becomes Action 3). Then, shuffle this card and all discard events into a new EVENT DECK.

Event Reference: Animator Pack

Streaming Live

(all players vote)

Everyone counts 3-2-1 and votes for the thumbs up/down option they prefer and the most votes determines the lasting round effect. Starting player breaks ties.

  • Thumbs Up: 2 card combos heal 1 point, 3 card combos heal 2 as normal.
  • Thumbs Down: Duck cards do not block thrown food.

Taco Tuesday

(all players vote)

Everyone counts 3-2-1 and votes for the thumbs up/down option they prefer and the most votes determines the lasting round effect. Starting player breaks ties.

  • Thumbs Up: All thrown food does +1 splat damage (in addition to other bonuses).
  • Thumbs Down: Discard the FLOOR and replace with 7 cards. FLOOR cards are not replaced when taken until the FLOOR is back under 5 cards.

Event Reference: Junk Food Pack

Bake Sale

(lasts entire round)

When you take a Throw action - you must throw every single throwable card (Food, Topping, Condition) you have in your hand (no Action cards). Heal 1 for every 2 cards thrown, and claim the Cafe Chaos bonus if 3 or more cards are played (but only once).

Food Poison

(one time effect)

Everyone must reveal their whole hand even if they have no Conditions. Players gain 1 splat point per Condition they reveal but can keep the Condition cards. If a player would take their 10th splat token this way, they do not take it.

Ice Cream Social

(one time effect)

Starting with the starting player, players choose any player to gain 1 splat. Players may choose someone who is not their current target and may also choose someone who has already been given a splat this way. A player MAY be given their 10th token during the Ice Cream Social.

Event Reference: Soobway Pack

Annoying Customers

(one time effect)

Start with the starting player and proceed clockwise. Players may trade Character Actions or Bonus Actions or any throwable card, but not their 3 Basic Actions. This trade is optional. Players may select to trade with a card now on the FLOOR previously traded by another player.

Caution Wet Floor

(one time effect)

Deal 5 more cards to the FLOOR even if it is currently over 5 cards. Every Topping revealed is 1 splat point for every player (no matter what actions they are showing). If a player would take their 10th splat token in this way, they do not take it. FLOOR cards are not replaced when taken until the FLOOR is back under 5 cards.

Extra Cheese

(lasts entire round)

Players may say (yell?) "with extra Cheese" for +1 splat point to all attacks with Food this round. This acts like a Topping card but isn't a card played for Cafe Chaos combo purposes. This can be done even if there is already a Topping played in the attack. (Example: Condition + Topping card (as a Food) + Topping card + "with extra Cheese!" is absolutely possible).

  • Smash
  • Spin
  • Sprint
