Contents of the Box

  • 330 cards, in six packs: Nuggets, Sel ou Poivre, Blue Menus (Menus Bleus), Cordon Rouge Menus (Menus Cordon Rouge), L'Addition, and Burger de la Mort. (The per-pack card counts are printed on the box cover but are not legible at scan resolution, so they are not given here.)
  • 1 "Carnet de Commandes" (order pad, used by the Game Master to record each team's score)
  • 2 team totems: Ketchup and Mayo
  • 2 Cheesebuzzers
  • 1 rulebook

Setup

Unpack the game from its plastic packaging and open the box. Sort the card packs by game phase: Nuggets, Sel ou Poivre, Menus Bleus, Menus Cordon Rouge, L'Addition, and Burger de la Mort.

Place each card pack in the cavities provided for them inside the game box. The blue Menu cards go in the large cavity, and the Cordon Rouge Menu cards go in the small cavity. Alvéole n.f.: from the Latin alveolus, a cavity in which something can be placed; here, the slots of the box.

Remove the Cheesebuzzer bags and place one Cheesebuzzer in front of each team.

The "Carnet de Commandes" notepad lets the Game Master record each team's score. The small Ketchup and Mayo totems are placed in front of each team.

Goal of the Game

The first team to total 25 Miam wins and may attempt the ultimate trial: the Burger de la Mort.

Number of Players

2 players, or 2 teams of players, with no limit on the number of players per team. With more than 15 players, remember to air the room.

Players or teams ask each other the questions. The game can also be played exactly as on the TV game show, with a Game Master who is not part of any team. The Game Master must absolutely be Alain Chabat. If he is not available, designate someone else. This is very serious.

Rules of the Game

A series of trials allows 2 players, or teams, to accumulate points called "Miam". The first to reach 25 Miam wins and may attempt the Burger de la Mort.

The Trials

The TOSS

The TOSS determines who takes the first hand. The winner of the TOSS chooses to play in the Ketchup or Mayo colours, and that team answers the questions FIRST. Various TOSS games are suggested below, but you may invent your own.

1. Nuggets

One question, four propositions, only one correct answer. This is not a speed quiz. If you are in a team, you may confer with your teammates; if you are playing one-on-one, you may confer with yourself.

1 Miam for a correct answer. If the answer is wrong, no Miam is won, but the Miam does not go to the opposing team.

2. Sel ou Poivre

A speed quiz. A title with 3 categories (example: "Bob Marley, a Harley, or both?") and propositions. Players must say whether each proposition belongs in one category or the other. The player or team who presses their Cheesebuzzer first may answer. The first answer spoken is validated, whether it is correct or not.

1 correct answer: 1 Miam. 1 wrong answer: the Miam goes to the opposing team.

3. Menus

This is not a speed quiz. In each Menu, 4 or 5 questions revolve around one theme. As with the Nuggets, you may confer with your team if you are in a team, or with yourself if you are playing one-on-one.

1 Miam for a correct answer. If the answer is wrong, no Miam is won, but the Miam does not go to the opposing team.

NB: Menus Cordon Rouge are extremely specialised, pointed, and reserved for experts in the subject or for those who want to lose. We strongly advise against them, but you do as you wish.

4. L'Addition

A speed quiz. A title (example: "The Answer Is Edible") and propositions. The first player or team who presses their Cheesebuzzer answers.

1 correct answer: 3 Miam. 1 wrong answer: the 3 Miam go to the opposing team.

Playing With a Game Master

Example: the Mayo team won the TOSS.

Nuggets (1 Miam per correct answer)

The Game Master takes the first Nuggets card from the pack and asks the first question to the Mayo team. The second question goes to the Ketchup team, and so on. Read the questions on both sides of the card. 2 Nuggets per team; 1 Miam per correct answer.

Sel ou Poivre (1 Miam per correct answer)

The Game Master takes the first Sel ou Poivre card from the pack and reads the title to all players. This is a SPEED trial: players answer at the same time, pressing their Cheesebuzzer as soon as they think they have the correct answer.

NB: Read only one side of the card, on pain of being abducted by aliens. That is false, but you get the idea: you must not do it.

Except for Sel ou Poivre cards showing this sign (⇨), which indicates that the Sel ou Poivre continues on the back.

Menus (1 Miam per correct answer)

The Game Master takes one BLUE MENU card and one MENU CORDON ROUGE card. He offers the Mayo team the 3 Menus (2 recto/verso Menus on the blue card, and one recto Menu on the Cordon Rouge card) and asks the series of questions on the chosen theme. He then offers the Ketchup team the 2 remaining Menus and asks the questions of the chosen Menu.

Players who choose the Menu Cordon Rouge will not receive more Miam, but will deserve a standing ovation from the opposing team for their audacity.

L'Addition (3 Miam per correct answer)

The Game Master takes the first L'Addition card from the pack and announces its title to all players. This is a SPEED trial: players answer at the same time, pressing their Cheesebuzzer as soon as they think they have the correct answer.

1 correct answer: 3 Miam for the team. 1 wrong answer: the 3 Miam go to the opposing team.

NB: Read only one side of the card, on pain of being turned into a pigeon forever. I am not saying whether this is true or not; try it and see.

Except for L'Addition cards showing this sign (⇨), which indicates that the L'Addition continues on the back.

Playing Without a Game Master, or With 2 Players

Example: the Ketchup team won the TOSS.

Nuggets (1 Miam per correct answer)

The Ketchup team draws a card and asks questions 1 and 2 to the Mayo team. The Mayo team draws a card and asks questions 3 and 4 to the Ketchup team.

Sel ou Poivre (1 Miam per correct answer)

This is a SPEED trial. In each team, one Game Master is designated. One Sel ou Poivre card is drawn, and the Game Masters take turns asking the questions to all players, who may take part in the game.

To play 2-player: each player draws a Sel ou Poivre card and asks the questions to their opponent.

If the answer is wrong, the Miam is awarded to the other team.

NB: Read only one side of the card, except Sel ou Poivre cards showing the sign (⇨), which indicates that the Sel ou Poivre continues on the back.

Menus (1 Miam per correct answer)

The Ketchup team draws one BLUE MENU card and one MENU CORDON ROUGE card. It offers the Mayo team the 3 Menus (2 recto/verso Menus on the blue card, and one recto Menu on the Cordon Rouge card) and asks the series of questions on the chosen theme. The Mayo team then offers the Ketchup team the 2 remaining Menus and asks the questions of the second chosen Menu.

Players who choose the Menu Cordon Rouge will not receive more Miam, but will deserve a standing ovation from the opposing team for their audacity.

L'Addition (3 Miam per correct answer)

This is a SPEED trial. In each team, a new Game Master is designated. One L'Addition card is drawn, and the Game Masters take turns asking the questions to all players, who may take part in the game.

To play 2-player: each player draws an L'Addition card and asks the questions to their opponent.

If the answer is wrong, the 3 Miam are awarded to the other team.

NB: Read only one side of the card, except L'Addition cards showing the sign (⇨), which indicates that the L'Addition continues on the back.

Winning

The first of the two teams to reach a total of 25 Miam is declared the winner and may attempt the Burger de la Mort. That team is also authorised to tease the opposing team, while remaining within the bounds of human decency.

If neither team has reached 25 Miam, play another game until one of them does.

The Burger de la Mort

The winning team designates its candidate to attempt the BURGER DE LA MORT. The Game Master, or a player from the opposing team, takes the BURGER DE LA MORT card and reads the following statement:

"I am going to ask you 10 questions. You are not allowed to answer before the end of the 10 questions. If, at the end of the 10 questions, you give me 10 answers in order, you win the Petit Burger de la Mort. If you give me the first 5 answers in order, you win the Grand Burger de la Mort. Are you ready? Then let's turn on the scary light."

You must now change the lighting, or have it changed, to make it more dramatic. You may also make or play a startling sound.

Other people present are forbidden to whisper to or help the Candidate, who on their side must not:

  • take notes;
  • use an earpiece;
  • use telepathy;
  • receive answers by carrier pigeon;
  • cheat on the metro;
  • speak badly of their mother;
  • in short, cheat.

The Grand Miam

Certain questions (such as "La Réponse est Masquée" or "La Réponse n'est pas Donald Trump") have several possible answers. We offer some of them, but there are others. Among those other answers, some are acceptable and others are not.

This is the ideal moment to debate in complete bad faith with your friends. It is funny, certainly, but sometimes it goes on too long, and someone has to decide. That someone is the Grand Miam.

In case of endless disputes, the Game Master may call on the Grand Miam. He must hold his ear as if he were being spoken to by satellite and say:

  • "Ah... The Grand Miam signals that he agrees, I grant the Miam," if he considers the claim justified;
  • "Oh no, the Grand Miam signals that the Miam is not accepted," if he considers the claim unacceptable.

Otherwise, we are stuck.

TOSS Ideas

There you go. You can start, and to find out who takes the first hand, it is time to move on to the TOSS.

TOSS Barbichette (Goatee TOSS): The player with the nicest goatee wins. If no one has a goatee (since that is not the most widespread facial-hair project), the one who would wear it best wins. You may help by roughly drawing a goatee with a marker on the players' chins. Warning: if it is a permanent marker and you work tomorrow, it may be unsightly.

Le Rain Man: Drop an open box of matches onto the floor. Players call out a number. The player closest to the number of matches on the floor wins. It is a bit painful to recover all the matches one by one and count them, but it is more fun if you put on music that builds suspense.

Le TOSS du Silence (Silence TOSS): It is a king of silence. The first to speak or make a noise loses. If it lasts a thousand years, play Chi-Fu-Mi (Rock-Paper-Scissors).

C'est celui qui dit "Qui est" (Whoever Says "Qui Est"): The first to say "qui est" wins.

La Blague la plus courte gagne (The Shortest Joke Wins): The one who tells the joke with the fewest words wins. The joke need not be funny, only fit the setup and have a punchline. Examples: "C'est un mec qui rentre dans un bar." (the shortest zoophile joke in the world); "C'est Joseph qui dit à Marie : QUOI ?!?!!" (It's Joseph saying to Mary: WHAT?!?!!).

Le Dico Aléatoire (Random Dictionary): Choose a word at random in the dictionary; whoever gives the closest definition wins. Look for common words; it is always better. Example: Dipneuste: fish of the subclass of lungfish (dipneustes).

Le Ping-Pong Verbal (Verbal Ping-Pong): Each player says a word in turn. There are less than two seconds between each word. The player who runs out of words loses. Possible themes: four-legged animals, verbs, TV shows, birds, brunette actresses, words beginning with S... The list is endless.

Ou encore... (Or else...):

  • Whoever best imitates a dog that has swallowed a duck takes the hand.
  • Whoever best imitates a mouse about to pounce on a mouse takes the hand.
  • Whoever best imitates the other team takes the hand.
  • Whoever best makes us believe they speak Russian takes the hand (or another language, if there are Russians among you; too easy).
  • Whoever sings best takes the hand.
  • Whoever makes the longest "Ooommmmmm..." takes the hand.
  • Whoever recites the alphabet fastest (with a stopwatch) takes the hand.
  • Etc.
