Components

  • 6 Beech blocks (2 with divots for the masts)
  • 20 wooden logs (2 thinner, and 2 others darker)
  • 2 marbles (placed on the upper deck between the masts; don't let toddlers swallow them)

Preparation

Both players build their ships as per the following sketch. The ships should be 25 - 30 cm apart (9.8 to 11.8 inches). First, place two of the wooden logs on the table, then place one of the blocks ("Below Deck") on them, with the felt side down. Note: The logs need not be parallel. Next, place two more logs, then another block ("Middle Deck"). Then, it will be another two logs, and finally the third block ("Upper Deck"). Two logs are then placed vertically as masts; the marble is placed in the indentation between them. Save the thin and dark rods until later.

Gameplay

Agree on who will start. Place the thin rod between the Below and Middle Decks or between the Middle and Upper Decks, in such a way that it protrudes towards the player. Hit the thin rod ("Cannonball") with the darker rod towards your opponents Breitseite. Caveat: You can easily damage your own ship!

Note: If your Breitseite has collapsed such that you cannot place the thin rod between the Middle and Upper Decks, for instance, then you must place it between the Below and Middle Decks.

Game End

A game lasts until one player's ship crumbles (loses both masts OR the Middle and Upper Decks are knocked off); the other player wins.

Scoring Variation

If you "win" a game as described above by crumbling your opponents ship, you earn 2 points. If you knock over your own ship, your opponent earns 1 point. The first player to reach an agreed upon number of points (for instance, 10) wins.

Alternatively, rather than earning points as described above, a players earns one point for each mast and sailor (marble) that remains on their ship when the opponent's ship crumbles.
