Each player receives one trading ship and one harbour card in the same colour and places them on the table in front of him. The harbour card showing the home harbour is the place where bean coins are stored.
For each player a second trading ship in his colour, a "3rd bean field" card and a pirate ship are set aside within reach. All other ships and "3rd bean field" cards are not needed.
The "La Isla Bohnitâ" card is placed in the middle of the table.
The bean cards are shuffled. Five bean cards each are laid out in a row, bean side up, to the right and to the left of La Isla Bohnitâ. Each bean row belongs to one of the two harbours (Bohnbay and Bohnaco).
Then bean cards are dealt to the players. The starting player receives three cards in hand. The player to his left receives four cards. The player following clockwise receives five cards. All other players receive six cards in hand. The remaining bean cards form the draw pile.
Turn Sequence
The turn of a player who is to move consists of three phases:
- Play bean card(s)
- Trade, shipping and planting
- Draw new bean cards
Phase 1: Play bean card(s)
This phase is identical to the rules of the base game. Bean cards from the hand may not be placed into any ship.
Phase 2: Trade, shipping and planting
The player whose turn it is draws two cards from the draw pile, as in the base game, and lays them face up on the table for everyone to see. The actions Trade, Shipping, Raiding and Planting may now be carried out during this phase, in any order and also more than once.
a) Trade
This action is carried out according to Phase 2 "Trading and Giving" of the base game, but without turning over further cards from the draw pile.
b) Shipping
Shipping to "La Isla Bohnitâ"
The player whose turn it is may sail his loaded or empty trading ship from his home harbour to a harbour of La Isla Bohnitâ (Bohnbay or Bohnaco). From one harbour of La Isla Bohnitâ a player may sail either to the other harbour of the island or to his own home harbour. The player may repeat this as often as he likes.
To sail from the home harbour to La Isla Bohnitâ, the player names the ship and the destination harbour to which the ship is to sail. He then takes the top card of the bean row at the destination harbour and places it in the named ship. The player may take several beans of the same type if they lie next to each other in the row.
The beans in the two harbours of La Isla Bohnitâ are harvested beans. They may no longer be planted on a bean field. A ship may only carry beans of the same type.
Raiding
If the player whose turn it is has bought a pirate ship during the game (see "Further actions of the players"), he may send that ship on a raid. A pirate ship may sail from its home harbour to the home harbours of the other players and attack the trading ships there (not pirate ships).
To go on a raid, the player points at his pirate ship, names the home harbour it is to sail to and the trading ship that is to be attacked.
The player whose trading ship is attacked still has the chance to sell its cargo immediately. If he does not take this option, one bean card is taken from the ship and placed into the pirate ship. The raid is then over.
The player whose turn it is may attack every trading ship of the other players, but only once each. A pirate ship may only contain beans of the same type. Captured beans may be transferred at any time into one of the player's own trading ships.
It is not allowed to:
- load beans from one's own trading ship into one's own pirate ship,
- load a bean harvest from a bean field into a pirate ship,
- plant a bean harvest from a pirate ship on a field.
c) Planting
This action is carried out according to Phase 3 "Planting beans" of the base game.
The phase Trade, Shipping and Planting is over when all players have planted the beans they traded and the player whose turn it is no longer wishes to carry out an action.
Phase 3: Draw new bean cards
The player whose turn it is draws new cards from the draw pile according to the number of players:
- three and four players: three cards
- five players: four cards
- six and seven players: five cards
If no bean cards remain at a harbour of La Isla Bohnitâ, five new cards are now laid out from the draw pile at that harbour.
Harvesting and selling beans
The bean harvests from fields and the cargoes of trading ships and pirate ships may be sold at any time. A player may harvest a bean field and place the harvest into a trading ship. The cargo of a ship must be sold in full. It must, however, bring in at least one bean coin, otherwise it may not be sold. The cargo may not be given away.
Note: beans from pirate ships and trading ships may be transferred even if they are worth no bean coins.
Further actions of the players
During the game a player may at any time buy an additional third bean field, a second trading ship and a pirate ship. The player does not have to be the one whose turn it is for these actions. All bought ships and the "3rd bean field" are usable immediately.
- The "3rd bean field" card costs three bean coins.
- The 2nd trading ship costs:
- with three and four players, four bean coins,
- with five to seven players, three bean coins.
- The pirate ship costs two bean coins.
The coins paid are placed bean side up on the discard pile.
Source inconsistency: the printed "Bohnentaler" section at the end of the rulebook gives the 2nd trading ship cost as a flat five bean coins, with no player-count dependence, which contradicts the table above. Both prices are transcribed as printed; the table above is the one in the "Further actions" section.
End of the game
The game ends as described in the base game rules.
The Bean Duel
"La Isla Bohnitâ" for two persons
For the Bean Duel the following special rules apply. During setup both players receive five bean cards in hand.
The three phases of a player's turn are changed as follows.
Phase 1: Play bean cards
Before or after playing a bean card onto a bean field, a player may place any card from his hand onto the discard pile. He may place only one card in this way during his turn.
Phase 2: Trade, shipping and planting
The player now turns over three cards from the draw pile instead of two. If the top card of the discard pile is then identical to one of the revealed bean types, it is added to the revealed cards. This action is repeated until the top bean type of the discard pile no longer matches any of the revealed bean types.
Example from the rulebook (illustration): three cards are revealed (Mocha, Wax, Blue); the discard pile's top cards are then added as printed in the example, with the additionally laid cards labelled "1. Wax bean" and "2. Mocha bean".
These beans are planted by the player whose turn it is.
Both the beans on the bean fields and the beans on the ships may only be sold during one's own turn. Exception: one's own trading ship is attacked (see Raiding).
Phase 3: Draw new bean cards
The player whose turn it is draws two cards from the draw pile.
Bean coins
The bean coins with which a player pays for the third bean field, the second trading ship or the pirate ship are set aside. They only come back into play when the discard pile becomes the draw pile.
The third bean field costs three bean coins. The second trading ship costs five bean coins. The pirate ship costs two bean coins.
Source inconsistency: this section gives the second trading ship as five bean coins, while the "Further actions" section above gives four (three and four players) or three (five to seven players). Both are transcribed as printed.
