Game Idea and Goal
Your harvest cards specify which beans you can turn into thalers. Use the bean dice to upgrade your harvest. But beware: everyone else can profit from your dice, so do not re-roll too often. In the end only one thing counts: who has the most bean thalers?
On your turn you may roll as often as you like, but each time you must place at least one die on the bean field. At the end of your turn you check which orders you fulfil on your harvest card. After three or more fulfilled orders you can harvest and collect bean thalers. The special feature: everyone else can use your dice rolls too, to fulfil orders on their own harvest cards. The goal is to earn 10 bean thalers.
The Bean Dice
The dice show six different kinds of beans in total. Not every kind is shown on every die. The exact distribution of the bean kinds over the two darker dice and the three lighter dice can be found on the overview cards.
The six bean kinds are: Garden Bean (Gartenbohne), Red Bean (Rote Bohne), Soybean (Sojabohne), Wax Bean (Brechbohne), Broad Bean (Saubohne) and Blue Bean (Blaue Bohne).
The Harvest Cards
Each harvest card shows five orders, which you must fulfil from bottom to top. Once you have fulfilled three or more orders, you can harvest. For this you receive 1-3 bean thalers (see "The Bean Harvest").
How do you fulfil orders?
To fulfil orders, at least the bean kinds required by the order must be visible on the dice. The following examples show which kinds of orders there are:
- One Broad Bean, one Soybean and one Red Bean must be rolled.
- Two Wax Beans or two Soybeans must be rolled.
- One Soybean or one Wax Bean, as well as one Red Bean and one Garden Bean, must be rolled.
- One Soybean or one Wax Bean must be rolled. In addition, two dice must show either a Garden Bean or a Red Bean. These can be two Garden Beans, two Red Beans, or one of each.
Attention: Rolled beans are not "used up" when fulfilling orders. You can use one dice result to fulfil several orders.
Bean bonus info: The small numbers to the right of the orders stand for the probability (in percent) that you roll the required bean kinds right on the first roll. Therefore: the smaller the number, the harder the order.
Setup
Shuffle all harvest cards and place them as a face-down draw pile in the middle of the table. Each player takes two harvest cards from the draw pile and places them face up in front of themselves. Arrange them so that there is one upper (active) and one lower (for covering) harvest card.
Place the box lid between you so that the bean field on the inside is visible.
Whoever most recently ate beans starts the game and receives the bean figure as well as all five bean dice.
Course of Play
If you have the bean figure, you are the actively rolling player. You decide how many and which dice you place on the bean field after a roll and which you re-roll. After each roll all the others check whether they fulfil orders on their own upper harvest cards. When you stop rolling, you check on your own upper harvest card whether you fulfil orders. Then you pass the bean figure to the person on your left. In addition, all of you may harvest your upper harvest card at any time once you have three or more fulfilled orders.
1. Roll the bean dice
At the start of your turn you roll all five bean dice. Then you must place at least one die on the bean field in the box lid. You re-roll all dice that you have not placed on the bean field. After every roll, however, you must place at least one more die on the bean field.
Attention: Dice that you have already placed on the bean field must not be rolled again.
Example 1: At the start of his turn, Matthias rolls all five dice. He can use the Broad Bean for fulfilling his lowest order and places the corresponding die on the bean field. He then re-rolls the other four dice.
2. Everyone else profits from your dice rolls
Everyone else should stay attentive too. After each dice roll, before the actively rolling player places one or more dice from this roll on the bean field, you check on your own upper harvest cards whether you can fulfil the lowest not yet covered order with the dice just rolled. If so, you slide your lower harvest card over the fulfilled order and thereby cover it. If you can fulfil several orders this way, you slide the lower harvest card on correspondingly further.
Attention: For this you must not use dice that already lie on the bean field from previous rolls.
Example 2: Matthias rolls four dice. Before he places further dice from this roll on the bean field, Martina speaks up. Her lowest order requires two Wax Beans. Matthias has rolled these. So she can fulfil the order and slide the lower harvest card over this order. Björn lacks the second Broad Bean for fulfilling his lowest order. A Broad Bean does lie on the bean field, but it comes from Matthias's previous dice roll, not from the current one.
3. Use the bean figure for a re-roll
Once in your turn you may use the bean figure to repeat your roll. To show this, lay the bean figure down. Then take all the dice you have just rolled and roll them all again - after all the others have checked whether they could already profit from your first roll. After your re-roll, too, all the others check again whether they can profit from this second roll.
Attention: You must not decide to re-roll only some of the dice. And dice that you previously placed on the bean field must stay there.
Example 3: Matthias rolls two dice. He is not satisfied with the roll because he can use neither of the two dice. He decides on a re-roll. Matthias lays down the bean figure and rolls both dice again.
4. Finish rolling and check your own harvest card
You finish rolling when you have placed all five dice on the bean field. Now you check on your own upper harvest card whether, with the dice on the bean field, you fulfil the lowest not yet covered order. If so, slide the lower harvest card over the fulfilled order and thereby cover it. If you can fulfil several orders this way, you slide the lower harvest card on correspondingly further.
Example 4: Matthias finishes rolling after placing all five dice on the bean field. With the dice result he fulfils the lowest two orders of his upper harvest card. Accordingly he slides the lower harvest card over these two orders.
As a reminder: rolled beans are not "used up" when fulfilling orders. Here Matthias uses the Soybean for fulfilling both orders.
At the end of your turn you pass the bean figure to the person on your left. They stand the figure in front of themselves. Then they take all five dice from the bean field and begin their turn.
The Bean Harvest
As soon as you have fulfilled three or more orders on your upper harvest card, you may harvest at any time, even if you are not the actively rolling player. For three fulfilled orders you receive 1 thaler, for four orders 2 thalers and for all five orders 3 thalers. When harvesting, proceed as follows:
- Turn your upper harvest card to its thaler side.
- If you receive more than one thaler, take one or two further cards from the draw pile as thalers accordingly.
- Place your thalers in front of you. The others may know at any time how many thalers you currently own.
- Your previously lower harvest card becomes the new upper harvest card. Draw another card from the draw pile and turn it face up. This becomes the new lower harvest card.
After harvesting, check whether you also fulfil the lowest order of your new upper harvest card. If so, slide the lower harvest card over the fulfilled order and thereby cover it. If several orders are fulfilled this way, slide the lower harvest card on correspondingly further.
Example 5: Martina decides to harvest. On her upper harvest card she has fulfilled four orders and therefore receives 2 thalers. (1) For the first thaler she turns the upper harvest card to its thaler side. (2) For the second she draws a card from the draw pile. (3) She places both thalers in front of her. (4) Finally she draws another card from the draw pile and turns it face up. This card becomes the new lower harvest card.
Note: In the rare case that you run out of harvest cards, take one of the overview cards and turn it to its thaler side. You can exchange it for five single thalers that you have already received.
End of the Game
If a player has 10 or more bean thalers after harvesting, they trigger the end of the game. If this is not the actively rolling player themself, the actively rolling player may not continue rolling and must place all dice on the bean field. They check one last time whether they can fulfil orders with the dice on the bean field. Finally, everyone may still harvest, provided they have three or more fulfilled orders. Then compare the number of your bean thalers. The player with the most bean thalers wins. In case of a tie, the win is shared.
