Goal of the Game
The aim of this game is to have an unforgettable festival experience and to immortalize this experience with a group photo. Attend concerts, have fun, visit the food court, keep your energy up, survive all the festival shenanigans, and, oh... don't forget to pee every now and then.
Use the euphoric chaos of the festival to your advantage and get all the players together in time. If you succeed, you may claim victory by taking a group photo.
Taking a successful group photo is only possible when:
- All players are at the same stage, where an artist is playing,
- and all players have a fun level of 8 or higher.
You can't take a group photo by yourself, and what's the fun in a solo festival? This is a cooperative game, so make sure to help out your friends to have the best possible festival experience!
Game Setup
Welcome to Boaromia festival, the festival grounds have been laid out. You must now prepare for the crowds. First make sure the grounds are in order before setting up your character.
The Boaromia Festival Grounds
Follow these steps to set up the festival grounds.
- Place the game board so all players can see it clearly.
- Announce the line-up. Place the line-up cards from left (light) to right (dark) so the schedule is split into day and night. The line-up cards are double-sided; place each randomly front or back. Use the supports to keep them standing.
- Shuffle all 13 night event cards and place 6 cards face down on the indicated space on the game board.
- Shuffle all 12 day event cards and place 5 cards face down on top of the night event stack on the game board.
- Shuffle the 6 night goal cards, divide into 2 stacks, and place them in 2 decks face down on the game board.
- Shuffle the 6 day goal cards, divide into 2 stacks and place them face down on top of the night goal stack on the game board. Now open the top card on both stacks.
- Place 12 out of 14 crowd pawns next to the board.
- Place the blast-from-the-past pawn in the middle of the food court.
- Place all the coins next to the game board.
On the back of the game board, you will find a second Boaromia festival ground. It is larger, more chaotic, and will require more festival skills to take a successful group photo.
The rules and setup are the same as on the front, but we recommend that you only use the back once you have won the game a few times.

Your Festival Character
All festival characters have their own characteristics and starting conditions. These special festival abilities will help you throughout the game... if you know how to use them! You can find these Festival Vibes on the character tracks. Follow the steps below to prepare your character for a (hopefully) perfect festival.
- Each player chooses a character track and matching pawn and places them in front of them.
- Each player takes an energy, bladder, and fun token for their character and places them to the values indicated by a darkened circle on their character track.
- Take the number of coins shown on your character track from the supply.
- Shuffle the must-see cards. Deal 1 at random to each player, place it on your character card next to must-see artists.
- Shuffle the must-miss cards. Deal 1 at random to each player, place it on your character card next to must-miss artists. Do you have the same artist as must-see and must-miss, exchange the latter for a new card.
It's almost time for the festival to begin!
- Each player individually chooses one of the campsites as their starting point and places their pawn there.
- Place the line-up token on top of the first round.
You're now ready to kick off an unforgettable festival together!
Line-up
At the start of the festival, the line-up time slots are filled with artists. You can attend artists by ending your turn at the indicated stage, at the end of that particular round.
Each round of play, the line-up token moves forward to the next time slot. Boaromia ends after 12 rounds.
Example: Each time slot represents 1 round in the game, the line-up token on top of the line-up indicates in which round you are. If you want to visit Videobottom for example, make sure you end this turn at Duroc.
Must-see & Must-miss
As to be expected everyone has their own taste in music, not everyone is a big fan of Harinna for example... Each player therefore has 2 must-see and 2 must-miss artists.
At the start of the festival every player receives a must-see and a must-miss card. These artists are to be chased or to be avoided at the festival.
Example: Your must-see artists are Pale Pink and Organica (we must say: great taste). In order to have fun and not miss out you must make sure to be at Chester White at the end of round 3 and at Duroc at the end of round 7. Enjoy!
Event Cards
At the beginning of each round (except the first) draw an event card. Carry out the instructions on the event card immediately. Event cards are divided in a top and a bottom half.
The top half of event cards usually informs you of some change which remains in effect until the next event card is drawn.
Note: In some events, players are selected based on specific conditions. If in this case the indicated levels and/or distances are equal, players may choose amongst themselves who is effected.
The bottom half of event cards usually instructs you to do the following:
- Blast-from-the-past: Move the blast-from-the-past to the indicated location.
- Crowds: Place crowd pawns to make all tiles of the indicated location crowded.
More information on page 11.
Festival tip: When an event card forces you to go to the food court you are not forced to eat, this remains your choice. The steps necessary to get you there also don't count as steps taken in your turn.
Goal Cards
To boost your chances at taking that perfect photo, complete goals for benefits. Each goal specifies requirements and its reward. When a goal is completed, you may use it immediately or save it next to the board to use later. In both cases flip a new goal from the stack. There is no limit to the amount of goal cards you can save to use at a later point.
If the line-up token is placed in the daytime phase, draw a day goal. When you move from daytime to nighttime, all daytime goals that are not achieved must be removed. Completed goals that have not been used yet, may remain in the game.
As soon as the line-up token hits the nighttime phase, you draw (sentence ends here in the printed rulebook; the quick overview on page 12 states: replace daytime goals with nighttime goals, from now on only draw nighttime events).
Festival tip: Although solely chasing the fun is tempting, collecting goal cards during the day, will help you overcome nighttime challenges.
How to Play
Day or night, the festival is sure to be full of events. In order to take that perfect group photo, you'll need to make sure you stay close to your friends, collect coins, grab a drink and of course: make some fun! Oh, and you might want to stop by the toilets too...
Let take a look at how to manage all of this!
Each Round
As is the case with any festival... there is no turn order, all festival goers may move simultaneously. Be careful though! Check the line-up and coordinate with your friends, because once steps are taken, you can't undo them.
-
Event card: each round (except the first) begins by drawing an event card. You immediately carry out what is written on this event card.
-
Player turns: after resolving the event, players take their turn. On your turn, you may move and perform actions. See "player turn" for more information.
- Used coins are immediately returned to the supply or, if applicable, to a goal card.
- Adjust your energy and bladder level according to the actions you have taken.
-
Goal cards: when a goal is completed, you may immediately cash it in for its benefit, or stash it next to the board to use later. In both cases, flip a new goal card face-up.
-
Adjust fun: if you end your turn at a stage where an artist is performing, you may gain (or lose) fun. Check whether it's a must-see or must-miss for you, and whether you're solo or with another festivalgoer (you don't need to be on the exact same tile). Adjust fun according to the conditions (see game board table and/or p. 9).
-
Photo moment: after all turns are completed, decide together whether to take the group photo. You can do this only when:
- all festivalgoers are at the same stage while an artist is performing (not necessarily on the same tile), and
- all festivalgoers have 8 fun or more.
If you take the group photo before the final round ends, you win! If you don't, you unfortunately lose the game.
Player Turn
You may move up to 6 steps each turn, in any direction. You are allowed to take less steps. While moving and at your destination you can perform various actions (summarized below). In Boaromia, "passing a tile" means moving from, over, or onto that tile.
Your Destinations
- Stage: gain or lose fun if you end your turn here while an artist is performing.
- Piggy Bank: passing by or ending here gives you 6 coins once per turn.
- Bar: passing by or ending here forces you to buy a drink once per turn.
- Food court: passing by or ending here lets you, once per turn, buy food.
- Toilets: passing by or ending here lets you, once per turn, reduce your bladder level by 6.
- First aid: this is where you'll recover if your energy level drops to 0.
- Empty tile: nothing to see or do here.
More details on each location can be found on page 10 & 11.
Movement
- You cannot move through backstages, buildings, stalls, tents, or bushes. You are allowed to move over tiles that are partially visible due to buildings and trees blocking the sight.
- Backstage Bert however, can move through stage buildings as if they were empty tiles. However, this does not apply to bars, food court, toilets and Piggy Bank.
- Festival goers don't block each other. Multiple players can share a tile, and you can move through tiles with others on them. There is no cap on how many players per tile: the more, the merrier!
- If you meet someone on the same or an adjacent tile, you may exchange coins. Your movement and turn do not end.
- If you pass a bar tile, you must buy a drink. This triggers once per turn, you may pass more bars if you like, you still only need to drink once.
- You may move 1 extra step if you reduce your energy level by 2. You can do this as many times per turn as you wish.
- Crowd and the blast-from-the-past can affect your movement (see p. 11).
Your starting tile next round: The effect of the tile you end on still applies at the start of your next round. Ended your last round at a bar? Next round starts with... another drink. Cheers! Effects of the blast-from-the-past and crowd do not apply at the start of your turn, you can always step away first.
End of Your Turn
- Return spent coins to the supply (or place them on a goal if required).
- Adjust energy and bladder levels immediately as you perform actions during your turn.
Day & Night
During the game you'll play a day phase followed by a night phase. This change is indicated by a darker color on the line-up. From this moment onwards, you'll start playing the nighttime goals and nighttime events. Other than this, the festival stays the same.
Energy & Bladder
Energy
Keeping your energy up is one of the key strategies to ensure a great festival experience. Each round costs 1 energy. You can gain energy by eating and drinking. If energy hits 0, you faint and will be transported to the first aid straight away.
Festival tip: Need a last push to reach your target? Take a sprint: trade 2 energy for 1 extra step. You may do this multiple times in your turn as long as you have the energy.
Bladder
All that partying makes you thirsty. And all that drinking fills the tank. Go in time because when your bladder level reaches 10, you can do nothing except move to a toilet to relieve yourself. No other actions are allowed until your bladder level is below 10. Even if your favorite artist is performing right now.
Find the Fun
Not having fun? Nothing dramatic happens... except you're not having a good time and you can't be in the group photo, which is kinda the whole point of Boaromia.
How to Gain (or Lose) Fun
Go to shows! Be at the right stage at the right time. When you're at a stage with an artist performing, different situations can occur. Your fun depends on who's with you and which artist is performing.
| Alone | Together | Missed | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular artist | +0 | +1 | +0 |
| Must-see | +1 | +2 | -2 |
| Must-miss | -2 | -2 | +0 |
Other Ways to Gain Fun
- Specific goal cards may grant extra fun when completed.
- Special Festival Vibes: Munching Mo gains fun when she convinces a fellow festival goer to eat a culinary curry together.
Other Ways to Lose Fun
- You lose 1 fun if you faint and end up at first aid.
- Certain event cards may cost fun.
- Certain goal cards may allow you to donate fun to other players, as well as receive it from others.
Festival Grounds
These festival grounds will offer you plenty of possibilities. Lets find out the different things you can encounter while roaming Boaromia Festival and their corresponding effects in these pages.
Locations
As you might expect, different locations will offer you different parts of the festival experience.. although not all effects will be as helpful when it comes to taking that group photo.
Stages
Boaromia has 6 stages, listed below: Chester White, Duroc, Swabish Hall, Mangalitza, British Lop, Ossabow.
At these stages you can have fun by ending your turn there while an artist is performing. The line-up shows where and when artists play, and the line-up token tracks the current round. You are considered at a stage as soon as you enter its grounds, indicated by stars on the ground.
Bars
If you pass a bar tile during your turn, you must buy a drink. If you pass multiple bars, you only have to buy a drink once (you can buy more if you want). Drinks can't be split, saved, or delivered to other players.
Drinking usually boosts energy, but also fills your bladder!
| Drink | Coins | Energy | Bladder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beer | 1 | 1 | 2 |
| Coffee | 2 | 2 | 1 |
| Mix | 3 | 3 | 2 |
| Water | 0 | 0 | 3 |
Food Court
Once per turn, when you pass a food court tile, you may order food. Hand in coins to increase your energy. You can only order from the stall you're actually queuing at: unfortunately the fries stall doesn't serve curry.
Meals can't be split, saved for later, or delivered to other players.
| Food | Coins | Energy |
|---|---|---|
| Fries | 2 | 1 |
| Burger | 3 | 2 |
| Curry | 5 | 4 |
Campsites
Campsites serve as the starting point for all Boaromia visitors. There are three different campsites on the game board. At the start of the game every player chooses a campsite.
Make sure to check the line-up and your must-see artists for the most convenient start.
Piggy Bank
Once per turn, when you pass a Piggy Bank tile, you receive 6 coins. No extra action is necessary. You've got deep pockets, you can carry as many coins as you like!
Toilets
Once per turn, when you pass a toilet tile, reduce your bladder level by 6. No extra action is necessary.
First Aid
The first aid post is an unfortunate but necessary part of every festival.
Players whose energy drops to 0 are immediately moved to the first aid post. If this happens during their turn, their turn ends. Players lose 1 fun and restore their energy to 3.
The Blast-from-the-past
In true festival fashion, this old friend and chatterbox blocks movement. If, during your turn, you pass a bar or food court tile where the blast-from-the-past is present, your movement ends immediately. This effects the whole food court or bar area. You may still order food/drinks and exchange coins.
At the start of the festival the blast-from-the-past is at the food court. During the festival, the blast-from-the-past moves from bar to bar as indicated by the event cards.
If you start your turn on a tile affected by the blast-from-the-past, your first step may move away, just make sure you don't pass another tile affected by it that same turn.
Example: Munching Mo is at Bar East and due to the event card the blast-from-the-past is moved there. Munching Mo may now move away from the bar as long as she doesn't enter another tile of that bar. If she does, the blast-from-the-past will notice her, will (of course) start talking to her.
The Crowd
Festivals bring people together, sometimes too close for comfort.
Event cards show a crowd icon, followed by a board location. That spot becomes crowded: place crowd pawns until all accessible tiles of the indicated location are crowded.
No more pawns left? You may now remove pawns from other locations to fill out the new location. Crowd pawns can only be removed by specific goal effects.
Effects of the Boaromia Crowd
Entering or moving between tiles with crowd costs 2 steps instead of 1. If you don't have 2 steps left to enter a crowded place, you can't enter that tile. Moving away from the crowd does not cost extra steps.
Crowd & Characters
- Crazy Q is immune to the crowd and can move through the crowd at no extra step cost.
- Siem Social gains 1 extra step if it lets her land on a tile with another player. See example below.
- Frits Fomo gains 1 extra step if it lets him land at a stage with a performing artist.
Example: Siem Social wants to reach Ossabow, where Crazy Q is standing in the crowd. Siem has used 5 steps and has 1 left. Her vibe grants 1 step because there's another player there, giving her 2 steps total, just enough to push through the crowds.
End of the Game
You win when:
- everyone has fun 8 fun or more,
- everyone is at the same stage with an artist performing, and
You lose when: When the last act has played and there is no group photo taken or it's no longer possible to take one.
(Printed as above; the rulebook's "win" list ends with "and" and the sentence continues no further.)
Quick Game Overview
Goal: Party together and win by snapping a group photo when all players are at the same stage while an artist is performing, and everyone has 8 fun or more.
Game Flow (12 rounds)
- At the start of each round (except round 1) draw an event card and resolve it.
- Players take turns (in any order, plan together): move up to 6 steps, undertake actions along the way or at your destination.
- At the end of a round: all players lower their energy by 1, move the line-up token forward.
- Decide if you can take the group photo and win. If not, continue.
- At round 7, begins: replace daytime goals with nighttime goals, from now on only draw nighttime events.
Player Turn (6 steps)
- Move across the board, avoiding obstacles.
Movement
- Passing a bar means you must buy a drink (pay coins, energy up, bladder up).
- Exchange coins with nearby players (same or adjacent tile).
- You can trade 2 energy for 1 extra step as many times as you like.
- Crowd and the blast-from-the-past may hinder you.
Destination actions (once per turn each)
- Stage: gain or lose fun depending on artist and who's with you.
- Food court: buy food and gain energy.
- Piggy Bank: +6 coins.
- Toilets: -6 bladder.
- First aid: if energy hits 0, you faint, lose 1 fun, reset energy to 3.
Icons
- Stars indicate where you can gain or lose fun, they also correspond to the fun level on your character track.
- The drop icon refers to bladder level and the toilets to relieve yourself.
- The flash refers to energy, also indicated on the playing board when ordering food and drinks.
- The pigs nose refers to coins and where to get them.
- First aid is unfortunately necessary for those not looking after themselves.
- For those not sure, these tiles are all linked to the bar, and yes they force you to drink. Cheers!
Game Variations
For the faint and not faint of heart, it's your choice how chaotic your festival experience is going to get.
You can always use the backside of the game board. That festival ground will challenge you to eat more, spend more coins and therefore make it harder to visit your favorite artists.
Easy Breezy
- Play with 10 crowd pawns (instead of 12).
- Piggy Bank pays 7 coins (instead of 6).
- When revealing a new goal, draw 2 and keep 1.
- Remove event cards "Overhyped" and "Dog's breakfast".
- Remove event cards "Mosh pit" and "Coffee isn't my cup of tea".
Challenging Party
- Play with 14 crowd pawns (instead of 12).
- Players start at 0 fun.
- -3 Fun (instead of -2) for missing a must-see.
- -3 Fun (instead of -2) for seeing a must-miss.
A Bit More Madness
- You can no longer step away from the blast-from-the-past at the start of your turn.
- While must-miss artists are performing, if you pass any tile within 2 tiles of that stage during that round, you lose 2 fun.
- 3 energy for +1 extra step (instead of 2 energy).
Total Mayhem
- Piggy Bank pays 5 coins (instead of 6).
- Toilets reduce bladder by 5 (instead of 6).
- Players have 5 steps per turn (instead of 6).
