Components
- 9 stone discs
- 1 base
- 36 gemstones – 12 each in 3 colors
- 1 pickaxe
Setup
Lay the 9 stone discs flat on the table. Slide 4 gemstones into each disc from above (A). The distribution of gemstones among the 9 discs does not matter. Then, one at a time, pick up each disc — grip it by its 4 gemstones so they do not slide back out — and stack the discs on top of one another on the base. You should now have a straight gemstone tower standing in front of you (B).
Hand the pickaxe to the youngest player among you. That player begins the game.
Objective
Collect as many gemstones as possible by striking the gemstone tower with the pickaxe. While doing so, avoid causing the tower, in whole or in part, to collapse.
Gameplay
If you hold the pickaxe, strike the gemstone tower once, then a second time, at spots of your choosing. The discs should shift enough that 1 or more gemstones fall loose. Gather up the gemstones and place them in front of you. Gemstones earn you plus points at the end of the game. But be careful — this calls for a delicate touch!
Avoid causing 1 or more of the stone discs to fall out of the tower. If a disc does fall, you additionally receive all the gemstones that did not come loose from it, but you must also place that stone disc in front of you. It will cost you minus points at the end of the game.
Afterward, pass the pickaxe to the player on your left, who then takes their turn.
End of the Game
The game ends immediately once all gemstones have been struck out of the gemstone tower, or once all stone discs have been knocked off the base.
Now tally your points as follows:
- Each red gemstone: 3 plus points
- Each pink gemstone: 2 plus points
- Each white gemstone: 1 plus point
- Each stone disc: 10 minus points
Whoever among you has the most points wins the game. In case of a tie, there are multiple winners.
Variants
For Advanced Players
If a player receives no gemstone at all on their turn, they must set aside 1 of their collected gemstones (the one of lowest value) near the base. The next player who receives gemstones then also receives all the gemstones that have accumulated by the base.
For 3 or 6 Players
Each player chooses 1 of the 3 gemstone colors. At the end of the game, each player receives 2 plus points for gemstones of their chosen color, and 1 minus point for each gemstone of the other two colors.
Handicap Rule
When gemstone collectors of differing skill play together, the following handicap can be set: more skilled players may not collect red gemstones — they must set these aside. Only pink and white gemstones count toward their score.
