The Cast
Becca - The Cards
A tough employer who demands everything of you. During the game Becca will shout orders at the Master Blenders (shown by cards). When an order is fulfilled, a new one follows immediately.
Kevin - The Dice
Each player has a die that represents Kevin. Five of the six sides each show a fruit. You can take the corresponding fruit or reroll (give the fruit back to Kevin). The sixth side is a wild: Kevin brings you - what a surprise - the fruit you asked for.
The Master Blenders - The Players
Each player is an experienced Master Blender with 2 blenders ready for use and a craving for free drinks!
Overview
Blend Off! is a game of speed and tactics for 2 to 4 players. The Master Blenders roll their dice (Kevin) to collect fruit and work through Becca's orders. When the fruit matches an order, the Master Blender can blend the ingredients and fulfil the order for golden stars. There are no turns; everyone plays at the same time to win. The player with the most golden stars at the end of the game is the winner.
Game Components
- 1 rulebook
- 4 fruit dice
- 41 wooden fruits
- 8 Bananas
- 8 Strawberries
- 8 Mangos
- 8 Oranges
- 8 Blueberries
- 1 Cheese fruit
- 8 Blender cards
- 4 Rules / Spill cards
- 36 Order cards
- 4 Orange
- 8 in each player colour: Blue, Yellow, Red, Green
Setup
- Each player receives a fruit die and a Spill card. Lay the 2 Blender cards of your chosen player colour face up in front of you.
- Place the Cheese fruit and the remaining fruits (each: number of players + 2) in the middle of the table. Return the remaining fruits to the box.
- Assemble Becca's order list from the "Order" cards: all orange cards, plus all cards of the participating player colours. For example: in a 2-player game (Red and Blue) the deck consists of the 4 orange cards and all red and blue cards. In a 4-player game all cards are used.
- Shuffle the assembled card deck and place it face down near the fruit.
- Now create the first orders from Becca's order list: lay out face up cards from the deck equal to the number of players + 1. If a "Special Order!" card is revealed, lay it out as normal and place another card on top of it so that both the new order itself and the "Special Order!" modification are visible in the lower third of the lower card. If another "Special Order!" card is revealed, keep stacking it in the same way until a normal order is drawn. For example, 4 orders are laid out at the start of a 3-player game.
You have now prepared everything. Begin with the countdown "Ready, set, blend!" ("Auf die Plätze, fertig, Mixen!").
Gameplay
In Blend Off! there are no game rounds. All players act at the same time. The actions players may perform at any time are: Collect, Blend, Dump, Blunder.
Collect
Roll your die so that Kevin fetches fruit from the fridge. You may then take the fruit shown from the general supply and place it on one of your blenders. Taking a fruit is optional. You can also reroll until Kevin brings the fruit you want.
Dump
You may throw away the fruit from one of your blenders. However, the whole blender is emptied, since the fruit is already mixed together. You are allowed, though, to pour the contents of one blender into the other blender to combine the ingredients of both. To do this, simply move all fruit from one card to the other.
Blend
When the fruit in one of your blenders matches the ingredients of a face-up order, call out "Blend!" ("Mixen!"). Blending consists of 3 steps: Claim, Call and Check.
Claim - Take the card of the corresponding order. If 2 or more players want to fulfil the same order at the same time and call "Blend!" at the same time, the player who touches the card first gets the order.
Call - Let Becca take the next order: turn over the next card of Becca's order list. Follow the rules in the Setup section if a "Special Order!" card is revealed. If the last card of Becca's order list is a "Special Order!" card, place it under any order already laid out.
Check - Now check whether you have executed the order correctly. If the fruit does not match the recipe, the order is put back onto Becca's order list. Whether correct or faulty, the fruit in any case goes back to the general supply.
Blunder
Sometimes players make mistakes while collecting and take fruit that does not match any of the currently displayed orders, call "Blend!" with wrong or surplus ingredients, or forget to let Becca take a new order.
If you catch another player blundering, call out loud "Blunderer!" ("Pfuscher!"). That player must now correct their mistake by putting back the fruit in their blender and putting the wrongly taken recipe back onto Becca's order list.
The blunderer must then sit out until another player calls "Blend!". While waiting, they may still call "Blunderer!" at any time if another player makes a mistake. If all players were blunderers and are sitting out at the same time, everyone starts again simultaneously after calling "Ready, set, blend!".
Spill
The Spill cards are an optional handicap, particularly suited to younger players or to the player who came last in the previous game. The owner of the "Spill" card may call out "Spill!" once per game to force all other players to completely empty both blenders and return the fruit to the general supply. This also works if a player is just performing the Blend action.
Special Cards and the Cheese Fruit
Special Orders
These change the recipe and the star value of any order:
Add - The fruit shown below must be added to the order.
Hold - These cards have an arrow pointing at an ingredient on the recipe lying above. This ingredient is removed from the recipe, so one ingredient fewer is needed.
The Cheese Fruit
This strict Asian fruit is known for its pungent smell and, for many, its disgusting taste. A few people actually love it, though. It does not mix well with other fruit. Becca once dared to try a cheese fruit smoothie as an experiment, but it quickly fell into disrepute and was - what a surprise - extremely unpopular.
That is why a few cheese fruits are still in stock. When a fruit has run out and the players roll that fruit, it confuses Kevin and he brings them a cheese fruit instead. The player may add it to another player's blender, as long as that player is not currently performing the Blend action. The affected player must then empty their blender and put all fruit back into the supply.
You may also play without the Cheese fruit. If you wish to, put 2 extra fruits of each kind into the general supply during setup.
End of the Game
The game ends when Becca's order list is empty and all orders still laid out have been fulfilled. All players count the golden stars on their completed orders. The player with the most stars wins! In case of a tie, the "Sweet Nirvana" order is placed in the middle of the table. The tied players empty their blenders and start a race to be the first to fulfil the "Sweet Nirvana" order and thus become the winner of the game.
Variants
The Ultimate Showdown!
For a longer game or a tournament, in a 2-player game all "Order" cards can be added to the deck. This variant can be played in the standard game as well as in combination with the "The Race!" variant. In the "The Race!" variant, each player takes all cards of 2 colours. One player takes all yellow and blue cards, while the other player plays with the red and green ones.
The Race!
"The Race!" is a fast game without nastiness towards the other players. Each player has their own fruit and orders. The "Spill" cards and the Cheese fruit are not needed.
Setup - Give each player a fruit die, two fruits of each kind, one blender and all 8 "Order" cards according to the blender colour. Lay the 2 "Special Order!" cards of each player next to each other in front of you and shuffle the remaining 6 cards. Each player then lays out all of their orders in front of them, placing the first 2 cards on the 2 "Special Order" cards. Note that the orders with the "Special Order!" cards must not require 3 fruits of the same kind. If this happens, the "Special Order!" card is slid under any other card.
Place the 4 orange orders face up in the middle of the table to set the final orders. Lay out "La Dulcita" together with the "Add Blueberry" card.
Gameplay - Players may only use their own fruit. They try to fulfil their own orders as quickly as possible. When blending, the completed order is turned face down and the blender is emptied again. As soon as a player has completed all of their orders, they call "Last order!" and try to fulfil one of the orange orders in the middle of the table. The player who first completes the order "Sweet Nirvana" takes first place. Second place goes to the player who fulfils "La Dulcita + Add Blueberry". Third is whoever completes the order "Surprise Me".
End of the Game - The game ends as soon as the 3 orange orders have been completed.
Blend Off! Junior
Blend Off! Junior is recommended for playing with children. The speed element is removed, so everything is turn-based. In addition, there is no Blundering.
Setup - The deck of orders in Blend Off! Junior is smaller than in the standard game.
- With 2 players, all cards of one colour and all orange cards except the card "Surprise Me" are used.
- With 3 players, all cards of one colour, 4 cards of another colour (3 random recipes and the "Hold" "Special Order!" card) and all orange cards are used.
- With 4 players, all cards of 2 colours and all orange cards are used.
Prepare the fruit dice, all fruits, the Cheese fruit and the blenders. Then lay out the first orders as in the standard game.
Differences in Gameplay - The youngest player becomes the starting player and rolls all 4 fruit dice. You may set aside as many fruits as you wish to keep and roll the remaining dice a second time. For each pair of dice of one kind of fruit, you receive the corresponding fruit. If you roll a "?", you may combine it with any fruit die. With two combined "?" you may choose a fruit. In total you can collect up to two fruits in a round. Now you may perform any number of actions (Collect, Dump, Blend) in any order. For example, the player may first use "Dump" and then collect their fruit, or use the blend between collecting 2 fruits. Once you have used all the actions you want, the player to the left takes their turn.
End of the Game - Just as in the standard game, the game ends when Becca's order list is empty and all orders still laid out are fulfilled. Each player counts the golden stars on their completed orders. The player with the most stars is the winner!
