Avatar Card Anatomy

A – Avatar Effect: The Effect indicated by the Avatar symbol on the Avatar Card must be resolved whenever the Effect of a Command Card shows the Avatar symbol.

B – Avatar Tool: The Avatar uses a Tool, which is indicated in the Effects with the Tool symbol. Etna's Tool is the Glyph Token.

C – Avatar Skills: Etna has the Avatar Skills explained in detail on page 10 (see Avatar Skills — Etna).

Etna Setup

When used as an Avatar, Etna cannot be chosen as a Mage during Step 8 of the Setup. Apply the following steps during Step 3 of the Avatar Setup:

  • Place the Forge Room so that it is adjacent to the Black Rose Room.
  • Clip the Large Avatar Base to the Etna Model.
  • Place the Etna Model in the Forge Room.
  • Clip the Avatar's Large Evocation Base to the Magma Model.
  • Place the Magma Model in the Black Rose Room.
  • Place the Magma Evocation Card on the [diamond icon] Slot of the Avatar Board.
  • Place a Glyph Token in each Room adjacent to the Black Rose Room.
  • Remove the Lava Flow card from the Forgotten Spells deck.

Avatar Special Rules — Etna

Glyph Tokens

Active Glyph Token and Exhausted Glyph Token are shown as the two sides of each Glyph Token (see the page 9 images).

The Glyph Tokens in the Lodge can be collected by Mages to exploit their devastating energy. During the game, Etna will try to collect and engrave Glyphs to enhance his Evocation, Magma.

Glyph Tokens follow these rules:

  • Collect: when a Mage activates a Room in which there is at least one Glyph Token, if that Mage is in that Room, they obtain a Glyph Token from that Room (and not from a Mage Card) and place it on their Mage Card (Avatar Card for Etna) showing its Active side (see image). A Glyph Token that is on a Mage Card is considered to be in the same Room as that Mage.
  • Defeat: when a Mage (including Etna) defeats another Mage who has at least one Glyph Token on their Mage Card (Avatar Card for Etna), they must take one of those tokens and place it on their Mage Card (Avatar Card for Etna) while keeping the side currently visible (Active or Exhausted, see image). If the defeated Mage still has Glyph Tokens on their Mage Card, they must be placed in the Room in which they were defeated.
  • Attack: a Mage who possesses at least one Active Glyph Token on their Mage Card can use the Mystic Strike Physical Action (see box).
  • Clean-up Phase: during Step 2 of the Clean-up Phase, starting with the player who has the Crown and proceeding clockwise, each Mage places all the Glyph Tokens they have in the Room in which they are. The Mage gains 2 Power Points for each Glyph Token placed this way.

Mystic Strike (Physical Action)

  • Exhaust all Active Glyph Tokens on your Mage Card and perform a Physical Attack on a Mage; you have +1 Strength for each Glyph Token you just Exhausted.
  • Move your Mage up to 1.

Avatar Skills — Etna

Forgeborn

If Etna begins his activation in his Cell, before revealing the Command Card, he places himself in the Forge Room.

Engrave Glyphs

If at the end of his own activation Etna is in the same Room as Magma, all Glyph Tokens on his Mage Card must be placed on the Event Board, in the Black Rose Trophy Slot. These Glyph Tokens are no longer considered to be in the Lodge.

Divine Fatigue

If there are six Glyph Tokens on the Event Board, the Avatar immediately wins the game. If this does not happen, at the end of the game Etna gains 1 Power Point for each Glyph Token on the Event Board.

Etna Priority

Diamond 1, Room target

Etna chooses as a target:

  • +Glyph Token: the Room with the most Glyph Tokens, if tied...
  • −Room: the closest Room, if tied...
  • −[Mage-figure icon]: the Room with the least [Mage-figure icon], if tied, the Choice of the Crown applies.

Diamond 2, Room target

Etna chooses as a target:

  • +[Mage-figure icon]: the Room with the most [Mage-figure icon], if tied...
  • +[black disc icon]: the Room with the most [black disc icon], if tied...
  • +[dark figure icon]: the Room with the most [dark figure icon], if tied, the Choice of the Crown applies.

Servant — Magma

A Servant is an Evocation that has a special bond with the Avatar.

Magma is the Servant of Etna and is represented in the Lodge by the corresponding Model and its Servant Evocation Card. The Servant Evocation Card is never discarded from the [diamond icon] Slot of the Avatar Board, even if Magma is defeated or removed.

Magma card: Priority, Comeback. Magma has Strength +1 for each Glyph Token on the Event Board. When it performs an Attack, it targets a Room. After it performs an Attack, it inflicts 1 Damage to each Mage 1 from the target. (The card prints the "1" after the Mage icon; the rulebook does not expand it, and it is transcribed as printed.) Stats: Speed 2, Strength 2, Health 5.

Special Rules

Priority: Magma follows the Priority on its Servant Evocation Card (also see box) to choose a target, move closer to it and attack it.

Comeback: If Magma has to activate when its Model is not in the Lodge (it was previously defeated or removed), Magma does not activate, and the Avatar places its Model in the Black Rose Room.

Magma Priority

Magma chooses as a target (priority sequence: [Mage-figure icon]: +Glyph Token > +Damage > +Health):

  • +Glyph Token: The Mage that has the most Glyph Tokens, if tied...
  • +Damage: The Mage with the most Damage, if tied...
  • +Health: The Mage with the most Health, if tied, the Choice of the Crown applies.

If Magma cannot reach its target, it moves as close to it as possible.

If there are no Mages in the Lodge when Magma activates, it does not move and ends its activation.

Legendary Scenario: Catastrophe

A Legendary Scenario is a special game that allows you to play an event from the world of Black Rose Wars: Rebirth by applying a specific set of new rules and using Legendary Scenario Cards dedicated to it.

In Catastrophe, the Mages will have to stop the cyclops blacksmith Etna who, by infusing power glyphs into his golem Magma, wants to conquer the Black Rose.

Additional Setup

Apply the following during the regular Game Setup:

  • Steps 1 and 2: instead of what is indicated in these points, arrange the Rooms and Cells as shown in the image in relation to the number of players participating in the game. The Room adjacent to the Black Rose Room must be the Forge Room.
  • Before step 4: Turn the Forge, Garden and Treasure Rooms so as to show the Rebuilt side. Place the corresponding Room Activation Tokens on these Rooms.

Once the Setup is complete:

  1. Place the Second Moon Cube on Slot 7, the Third Moon Cube on Slot 19, and the Black Rose Cube on Slot 32 of the Power Board.
  2. Follow the steps of Etna's Avatar Setup.
  3. Place the Legendary Scenario Card Catastrophe of the relevant Moon Phase on top of each of the three Event decks. These cards will be the first Event to be resolved in each of the Moon Phases.

Scenario Rules

The following rules apply while playing this Legendary Scenario:

  • Unquenchable Forge: when the Forge Room is activated, its Room Activation Token is not turned to the Exhausted side.
  • Magmatic Passages: a Mage who would exit a [red Room icon] Room with a "Move 1." Effect of a Physical Action, may instead give up that Effect and place itself in another [red Room icon] Room.

Honorable Mention

At the end of the game, the Mage with the most [skull icon] of the [rose icon] gains 3 Power Points; if tied, no Mage gains these Power Points.

Lodge Layouts

The printed rulebook shows the Lodge layouts for one, two, three, four, five and six players as diagrams. The diagrams are images only and carry no text.

Large Models and Area Effects

The text on this page and the next two pages is part of a separate Nova Aetas Renaissance insert, printed upside down in the PDF; it is transcribed in printed order. See the Nova Aetas Renaissance Insert section below.

A Large Model is considered to be targeted by an Attack with the Area Trait if at least one of the Squares it occupies is within the Area of the Attack. If a Large Model is the target of an Attack with the Area Trait, it suffers only the Effect intended for the target, even if it occupies multiple Squares within the Area. If a Large Model is not the target of an Attack with the Area Trait and occupies more than one Square within the Area, it suffers the additional Effect only once.

Large Models and Line of Sight

A Large Model always has a valid Line of Sight on all other Models and vice versa.

Nova Aetas Renaissance Insert: Gaea Hunt Mission

How to Use this Expansion

This expansion adds a new Hunt Mission to be included in any Nova Aetas Renaissance Campaign of the Core Game or any Expansion.

If you decide to use Gaea in your Campaign, add the Event Card found in this box to the Core Game Event Card Deck.

Gaea is a Hunt Mission and follows all the rules for this type of Mission, described in the core Rulebook of Nova Aetas Renaissance.

Bounty

Instead of waiting to draw the Event Card "The Hill that does not Sleep," at any point in the Main Campaign you can mark the title of this Side Mission in the Active Side Mission Slot and play it as if you had drawn the Event Card "The Hill that does not Sleep."

The Event Card "The Hill that does not Sleep" carries this instruction: You can mark the F1 "The Forge of Terror" Side Mission in the Active Side Missions.

Large Models

Some Models occupy more than a single Battlefield Square. These Models are called Large Models. These Models occupy only a single Square during movement. In other words, while moving, a Large Model is considered as a normal Model, and then returns to occupying more Squares the moment the movement ends. When players need to determine the movement of a Large Model, they choose any of the Squares occupied by the Model and count starting from the chosen Square (a normal-sized Model can be used to simulate the movement of the Large Model). When the Large Model finishes its movement, the players place the Model so that the Squares occupied include the Square where it finished its movement. If placement is not possible because the required Squares (usually 4) are not all available, players refer to the following rules:

  • If there are Models occupying the Squares, the Large Model pushes the Models occupying them into adjacent available Squares or the nearest available Square.
  • If there are Scenic Elements occupying Squares, place the Large Model in Squares that are available or occupied by other Models. If this is not possible, the Large Model ends its Movement in a Square that allows its placement.
